I was once a cup holder for a marathon. I was handing out blue Gatorade. One lady grabbed the cup but dropped it, spilling sticky Gatorade all over her very cute white outfit. It was literally the first mile of the race, so she had to run pretty much the entire race uncomfortable. I know it wasn't my fault, but I felt such horrible guilt. I haven't volunteered at a marathon since. Edit: I wanted to add that she completely freaked out. She screamed when it happened. She didn't stop running, but I could hear her crying about it as she continued. She seemed a little anal-retentive. It was also my very first hand off, and I had just been telling my friends I was afraid I'd drop it on someone right before it happened! 😂

No. You don't hold them from the top. The helpers are holding the bottles correctly. The problem is that the cyclist is inexperienced at grabbing a bottle.
I think the first video and the second video is not the same. She did about 13 cycles in the first part, and in the second part, she only did 5 cycles. Even if it is slowed down, they should have about the same amount of cycles.
There's no time and space to be running alongside people that don't know how to grab a bottle in the first place. Triathletes should learn how to grab a bottle and train it. If you don't there's no point in trying it in a race without reducing speed.
It is not easy to grab a bottle at 45km/h, and even more so if it is full, since your hand needs a great deal of energy to accelerate a full bottle from 0 to 45km/h in less than a second, So the bottle hits your palm and bounces very far before you can close your hand, it's hard for many to gauge the speed at play.
I would attach a big loop on top... And the athelete should be advised to hover their hands abv the bottle to catch it. It'll be easy to bring it back onto ur palm.

I was taught when passing a botte to a rider you run slowly reducing the impact and therefore increase the chance of it being collected
Hold from the neck and run along side. (So says Jack Simes and I suspect many others.)
Many races don't let you run. You can move your arm in their direction of movement to make a smooth pass, but can't run.
There's no time and space to be running alongside people that don't know how to grab a bottle in the first place. Triathletes should learn how to grab a bottle and train it. If you don't there's no point in trying it in a race without reducing speed.
