The note probably said, "I'm not ever coming back." Let me sort it out: 1) In the movie, the "neighbor" ghost concludes, "They are not coming back," and vanishes; a little foreshadowing & explanation for us, the viewers, as to why the husband's ghost will disappear at the end of the movie......because the wife is not coming back! 2) The wife explains in the beginning of the movie she leaves notes behind, in the event she ever returns, to find a piece of herself there. She leaves a note inside a wall before leaving the house. But not for herself, but for her husband. She knows she will never go back to the house out of sheer sadness and depression. The note is not for her, but for her husband's ghost. Women by nature are more sensitive than men. The wife has picked up that her deceased husband's ghost was still inside their home; he had not moved on; "crossed over." She therefore leaves the note, not to herself, but for her husband, knowing very well her husband still loves her, even beyond this world; that he is still in the house out of attachment, and, that any married man truly in love with his wife, lovingly knows his wife's ways. The wife has no doubt in her mind the husband will find and read the note. And upon reading it, realize he must move on, because the wife in not coming back. He therefore vanishes.....he crosses over, knowing very well that the wife's final act of love towards him was leaving the note and its confirmation that she will never return. The note could only have been written and left behind by a wife still in love with her deceased husband. Their love for each other had transcended death. In effect, she is telling him, "I love you.....I will always love you, but you must go on, you must cross over." It may have been titled "A Ghost Story." But it may have well been titled: A Love Story.
I think the note said, "Move on" because Casey's character didn't want to leave because of the history of the house, just like he stated in the film, but when he agrees to move that's when you hear the noise that happens in the middle of the night and the cycle of the ghost comes full circle
The drunk at the party spoke of the expanding-collapsing universe. Why? To give us a clue that this wasn’t a return to the past, but a move through the collapse to the next Big Bang into the future in which history repeats itself. That’s why the couple’s behavior was slightly different: they weren’t the same people, but the situation repeated itself. I think it’s a flaw in the plot, but it’s still a good story.
I thought the same that when he jumped off the building, he fastforwarded to a new generation of new settlers. However. It wouldnt make sense with the note and the neighbor ghost was supposed to be the girl that died because the ghost sheet matches with her dress. The girl ghost was there before he jumped.
This would be my explanation: The ghost was given plenty of time to rest his soul. Even if he jumped off the building to restart again, the Universe will wait and rewind time until he rest his soul. Remember, the Universe opened the door for him but he refused to enter and continued to be unrest and begin to search for an answer. When he was still alive, he keeps seeing a prism or a signal from the Universe in the same corner where the note is, which is his way out. He was going to find the note that he has been looking for but he kept getting interrupted. When he had to restart again, he finally found the answer or the note to rest his soul. My other theory is that when he restarted again, there was another ghost that was with him in that house. My guess is that it is the ghost of his wife, she should be dead then if it was a second loop. And she is too possibly trying to find an answer. The neighbor ghost is the mother settler that was murdered by the indians thats why the ghost sheet matched her flower print dress before she died. When the house was torn down, the neighbor ghost was rested because she found the answer she was looking for which is probably that her family are not coming back or the note she found under the rock that said "theyre not coming back". A lot of people say that when he jumped off the building, he was fastforwarded to a new similar reality. This theory will not makes sense because the note that hes been searching for wouldnt be meant for him then.
They were planning to move on from that house and she convinced him. The day his car crashed, he was moving things from that house to other one. So she thinks this is her fault. The spirit didn't want them to go, so that the accident could be prevented. But things went like they should do. Everyone knows why he stayed and waited for her - the connection (love). He wasn't ready to leave her. The card was written as follows: "Forgive me". That's how spirit knew that she is okay and he can now move on. Therefore he vanished to other realm. ( I may not have understood the movie...but this is what i think.)
The ghost lingered in the house because his wife said she liked to leave notes in case she comes back. The ghost does not move on because he thinks she’s coming back. I think the notes says “I’m not coming back” and the ghost moves on.
This movie is haunting in the most beautiful way. Its been 3 years almost and i think about it time to time and i dont know why? The note at the end made this movie a masterpiece, It was so personal and so outstandingly directed that me/the audiences were totally relieved that the story of this ghost finally is completed. It ended.
I don't think he went back in time. I believe he went forward and woke up after a new Big Bang - hence the comprehensive exposition at the party. He's experiencing the same destined things again, but discovers new details, enough for him to find closure.

I feel he was waiting for her to come Back to retrieve the note. The wife mentioned she wrote notes so that if she came back there would be a piece of her there? Maybe he was waiting for her to come back. He didn’t read the note as soon as she left.
I think the note said “I’ll be waiting to see you again”. He realized in that moment that had he gone on earlier he would be there when she crossed over, waiting for her. Now she is waiting for him and he immediately crosses to be with her.
Why did the husband not want to move out of the house with his wife when he was alive and didn't want to talk to his wife about it? Like he was already attached to the house or something before his death
i think when he nearly got the note.. house was demolished.. so he went back in time and to get the note.. but he had to wait for soo long to reach that time..
It makes sense i.e. he traveled back in time than the world ending. Look at the western outfit of the carpenter, look at the transport, they look ancient.
I think when the ghost jumps from the roof in despair, he is forced to start again. The ghost is then transported back to the origins of the land meeting with the original settlers. I think he jumped because he couldn’t find meaning or peace, he wanted to opt out. The game of life forced him to reset and search for resolution, apparently the note achieved this. Life forces us all to face our demons over and over again until we learn and move on.
Many of us could say that life is very hard, however; "living death" dragging a great intensity of pain that this state entails, it is also very hard to "feel that way of life". Death is a continuous process of life, which we know very little about, but which shows us that life does not end when our bodies stop breathing, since being energy we transform ourselves into another source of life. Now, when people die, many are lost and do not understand what happened or what it means, so a part of them instinctively risks going towards the light, however others will prefer to stay in this world, since they feel tied to this earthly life for having different pending matters to conclude. For that reason, this group of people in their new state as "spirit or ghost", stay close to their loved ones to be with them, while others will frequent different houses or people, to solve something that happened to them while they were alive. And when at the end of all that journey, they manage to find the answer that they wanted so much to find, it is when they feel that they no longer have to continue in this world, so they pass to a superior state of spiritual life.
@PowderedVoltage ghost does not care about strong economy since they can’t buy stock or cash it out and they live no boundaries so I guess the secure border doesn’t really matter to ghost.
An amazing movie. Absolutely loved it. I agree with most of this but not that he chose to stay. He was stuck in this space forever, until he finally got closure. The note gave him that. Like the other ghost, when he saw she wasn't coming back, that was him released.
“Finally, the ghost is inside the house again, watching as his living self and his wife see it for the first time. He asks the realtor about the piano, which she says has "always been here." As he watches the couple, minor details of their lives start to emerge that differ from the life he and his wife led before his death, implying that rather than moving backwards in time, he has moved forward, into a subsequent iteration of the universe. This time, there is tension in the marriage, and the husband is resisting the idea of moving out. The night before his death, he tells his wife that he is ready to move. The ghost sits at the piano and strikes the keys, causing the noise that startled them at the beginning. Later, as the wife moves out, the ghost sees his earlier self (now a ghost also, but unaware of the other's presence) watching her leave. He goes to retrieve the note from the wall as before, and this time manages to reach it. Upon opening and reading the note, the ghost's sheet crumples and he vanishes.”
The long silent pauses in the film are meant to show the viewer some of what it would be like to be conscious after death. It's meant to share that same feeling of boredom, sorrow, and meaninglessness the ghost felt. We are observing the ghost like he's observing his surroundings. A 14 minute film couldn't have achieved that effect.
A poignant and haunting film. The stupid sheet grew on me over time. The expanded scenes that dragged on instilled the ghosts boredom in me for stringer empathy. I tell everyone to wait for a quiet, reflective evening, to watch it.
The pie scene was a perfect scenario of life and death. How she must have felt like dying after the loss of her beloved yet she had little choice. She had to live as painful as it felt. Eating was painful for her she had lost all pleasure. Only after she ate could her body feel the pain and remorse of the living. Before that she must have been in shock.
First - I really enjoy watching both of these actors. I wondered about this movie, so thank you for this review. The Pie Scene - I wanted her to just eat the pie and not the crust. That crust seemed so hard. I was getting sick watching her eat all that crust. I wonder how many takes it took for that shot.
very sad but interesting at the same time, and the part of the eating the pie omg poor woman I bet she was thinking okay when are we going to cut.. ....cut....cut...helloooooooo !
When they were laying on the couch the light was above them. When the ghost found the note he turned into the light. When he died he made it back to the house, and never left when the new family moved in or it was RE-developed. He jumped off the building and time started over. She kept asking why he loved the house so much. Maybe he was a lost soul attached to this area? I don’t know, good movie though
I don't think he was trying to kill himself when he jumps off the building.. I may be wrong, I needed an explanation to understand the movie so what do I know lol
+Irene Ortiz lol. Its the only explanation that fits in the films narrative ( that I know of ) other than he might just be bored. I could be wrong though.
Nice video and interesting take on the film but.. Problem with the idea of C jumping because he grew tired of existence is that we see his neighbour vanish into nothingness earlier in the film saying "I don't think they're coming back" i.e.. we know how the ghosts do when they give up. So I would suggest that is not what is happening. Instead the jump could indicate that he has lost his earthly connection as the home he once knew gradually disappears. It's consistent with the traditional horror trope that ghosts are tied to places and houses and also what later happens. When he jumps it has probably been more than hundred years and there is nothing left of of his home and the place no longer someones home and moreover the note has been buried. There's a looooot of talk about the importance of a home in this film. Here's another point of disagreement - he does not move backward in time but forward and I'm saying this because there's so much time spent on exposition at the Party. The guy is talking about the pulsating universe without mentioning it explicitly. So when we meet C again he is in another loop of the entire universe doing it all over again. The reason we see him again at this exact point is because this is the exact time the history of his future home starts as the settler lay the foundation. So he in fact reappears for the same reason he disappeared earlier - the connection to his home is reestablished and you could say he becomes sentient again. If you pay close attention you also hear the girl humming the song that he later composes for m. So this is also where C's history starts. Granted, on a stand alone basis the idea of him jumping because he no longer had a connection to the world in the form of a home is speculative. But having him reappear the exact moment the history of his home starts lends some support to that idea imo. And the note probably said "safe safe safe" ...
arnemyggen this is very possible explanation. I do like the idea of the connection to the house as it’s something they both worked on at some point. I’ll have to rewatch the film.
My theory was that he justed happened to have wanted to head downstairs at the time and thought "hell, why don't I try jumping Instead of the elevator?". Just came with really unexpected results...
Broom Films the director said that he didn't want to leave his house he had lived in for a long time in texas just like the character . So there is an importance of home and attachment to it and why it happens
@@amirismspace tho if I had to guess, I'd say it was "safe, safe, safe. This treasure yours" from the page in that book that he knocks off the shelf. She knew on some deeper level he was still in that house and that was her way of communicating it.
Then what's the significance of that scene from the party in which a man says about the destruction of the earth and universe and also little bit about the concept of evolution? Here me out.... If the concept of "going back in time and relive the same moment" is what we saw here then why can't the ghost live till the end of the universe and wait again until the new but same universe born with same incidents and characters? I know... This theory isn't good as much as going back in time but again.... Then what's the significance remain of what the man said in the in the party?
At first I thought it was his wife's ghost because the Universe rewinds time she would have been dead then. But I realized, she never had a connection with that house so my guess is that there was another person who had a connection with that house after him.
At first I thought it was a joke wearing a bedsheet with two holes but the story it's very good even though the special effects we're almost funny you would expect something a little more sophisticated but it's something new just like The Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity it takes a fresh new ideas
The part I didn't understand was towards the end and they're talking about her always having to go and he stays like she somehow knows he's a ghost. Like they're on a loop. That's gotta be the answer but how does she figure it out.
Liked this video, disliked the movie. It doesn't make any sense that the first time piano is bumped by a ghost, at the begging of the movie, and then after the main char dies, he can't see a ghost that was there. How da faq can he see another ghost version of him by the end and not previously from the beggining. The first ghost couldn't have read then note cuz it wasn't even written, so he definitely didn't find clousere. It is just streight stupid.
Maybe ghost time isnt the same as we are and dont you think its weird everything happen like exactly the same
Same I'd like to think that since the settler girl was humming his song. Cooler than travelling back in time imo lol.
It's my #1 favorite film for this year!!!! Loved it!!! Didn't expect it to be that fucking amazing and I'm glad most of the critics and film goers enjoyed this film as well. Kinda rare for an A24 film lol
+Uchima I was actually shocked how good it was as the sheets initial made me laugh however when examined after the viewing I can see why they choose that way of depicting ghost.
This movie hits hard. Sad, depressing and heart breaking. Wish I would've skipped it honestly.
@@msphoenix269 Really sorry to hear that. I only have 1 son. He'll be 22 this year. Honestly don't know what I'd do without him. He's all I have. Can't imagine how hard that must be...
Ms Phoenix269 You’ll learn to move on and accept just like how the ghost moved on. Your son will want you to be happy as long as he’s in your heart
Feeling the same way right now....
That's honestly what makes it so beautiful though.
I like movies that provoke emotion but yeah this def had a net negative effect on my mental health lol. Still appreciate the film for it's ability to do that tho.
I feel he was waiting for her to come
Back to retrieve the note.
Because he was already haunting the house when he moved in.
i think when he nearly got the note.. house was demolished.. so he went back in time and to get the note.. but he had to wait for soo long to reach that time..
The note says "Donald J Trump will be the next president of the United States!" The ghost sees that and he lost hope and leaves.
@PowderedVoltage ghost does not care about strong economy since they can’t buy stock or cash it out and they live no boundaries so I guess the secure border doesn’t really matter to ghost.
There’s a director’s explanation on UA-cam but honestly I like the ones people came up with on here better.
So you take fanfic over the real explanation.
@@RealSkyDiver2 interpretation is part of art
People do more than just stare at stuff. This movie should have been 14 minutes long, with credits.
this movie isn’t for you then. It has such a deep meaning.
I've been there
I wonder if he in the ending remember why he want to read that note
I didn’t go into any preset expectations with this film, but I was amazed. Brilliant movie. And very sad I might add.
I thought Michael Myers was under the sheet.
It's Casper
The neighbor ghost was cute and made me sad haha
Very clever. I found it very sad.
The note got torn, he couldnt read it. So he just gave up in the end.
Amazing ghost story videos
“English or spanish” the note says☠️
😂😂😂baby you got something on your nooooooseeeee
very sad but interesting at the same time, and the part of the eating the pie omg poor woman I bet she was thinking okay when are we going to cut.. ....cut....cut...helloooooooo !
I think she wrote I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS HOUSE
The note said stop filming this stupid movie and he vanished!🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Your favorite movie is probably Transformers shut up simple brain
Personally, I thought this was a very sad story.
Youre like a fucking film critic savant.
Glad I don't believe in ghosts
Depressing as all Hell
Damn this movie hurts.
I watched this with a couple buddies of mine hush as shit, I had no idea what was going on
note says... "ghosts do not exist"
Excellent!
If y'all want this movie to make sense, watch Triangle movie. Explanation is better.
I didnt completely understand the movie when I first saw it but when we disappeared I broke down:(
My guess of what She wrote in the note was I'll go find you in heaven or wherever You are I'll get there ❤
He couldn't read that note. Look how the note was torn apart. That's why he gave up just like the girl's ghost.
Note said let's renew our bows, he said ✌️
When they were laying on the couch the light was above them. When the ghost found the note he turned into the light. When he died he made it back to the house, and never left when the new family moved in or it was RE-developed. He jumped off the building and time started over. She kept asking why he loved the house so much. Maybe he was a lost soul attached to this area? I don’t know, good movie though
I think the attachment to the house was the reason that ghost was ghosting for such a long time.
A very short yet thorough movie explanation
The note says " I'm your sister."
Movie Makers please tell what was written on that note
Maninder Kaur i see dead people 😜✌️
As typical, the film makers would give the annoyingly canned reply in saying, "What was written on the note is anything you interpret it to say."
It doesn't matter what's on the note. All that matters is that the ghost finally got to see it
@@amirismspace tho if I had to guess, I'd say it was "safe, safe, safe. This treasure yours" from the page in that book that he knocks off the shelf. She knew on some deeper level he was still in that house and that was her way of communicating it.
the actress never told and the director said in an interview, that it is up to her, so we will never find out
Worst movie ever
Sitting down to watch this was fraustrating and tiring
I didn't understand shii
Was confused the whole time
You didn’t pay attention then
Sit and watch her eat a pie for 5 mins. That was fun 🤨
the note said... Red was the Imposter.
The real question here though is what was written on that note.
only rooney mara knows
Yeah i thought after the ghost disappeared the letter somehow falls to the ground and the camera will slowly focus on it so we can read it.
How come Ghosts always have clean sheets?
Yup its an great movie i love it
very well explained
The note said - we got viewers to pay $13 per ticket, to waste 1 hour and 32 minutes, they'll never get back. And she wrote it very tiny print.
a great movie
Weired movie I think if I passed away I will visit my house like that lol
Then what's the significance of that scene from the party in which a man says about the destruction of the earth and universe and also little bit about the concept of evolution? Here me out....
If the concept of "going back in time and relive the same moment" is what we saw here then why can't the ghost live till the end of the universe and wait again until the new but same universe born with same incidents and characters?
I know... This theory isn't good as much as going back in time but again.... Then what's the significance remain of what the man said in the in the party?
BEAUTIFUL
you nail it
Good movie .
Great movie
You haven't said anything new.
What about the girl who hides the notes under the rock??? Why there are two ghosts? When she leaves the house?
At first I thought it was his wife's ghost because the Universe rewinds time she would have been dead then. But I realized, she never had a connection with that house so my guess is that there was another person who had a connection with that house after him.
i think the second ghost is the little girl of the settlers, waiting for her parents to come home. maybe she was killed before her parrents arrived.
oh, i get it now.... it's just a bunch of nonsense and made-up rules
This might an unpopular opinion but the movie make no sense
What did the note say
it said:
Ingredients
½ tbsp olive oil
1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
1 x 500g pack British Beef Steak Mince 15% fat
1 tsp mixed dried herbs
1 egg, beaten
4 slices mature Cheddar (optional)
4 white rolls
few round lettuce leaves, torn
1 beef tomato, sliced
ketchup, to serve (optional)
What a grate movie
Why there 2 ghosts. come on you can't explain A Ghost Story and skirt around that.
I cried this movie beautiful 💕🥺
At first I thought it was a joke wearing a bedsheet with two holes but the story it's very good even though the special effects we're almost funny you would expect something a little more sophisticated but it's something new just like The Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity it takes a fresh new ideas
Obviously the note said they've been trying to reach him about his sheet's extended warranty.
The part I didn't understand was towards the end and they're talking about her always having to go and he stays like she somehow knows he's a ghost. Like they're on a loop. That's gotta be the answer but how does she figure it out.
How long after his death was the part where she kissed that guy?
@@tColorsinspacerecordings lol really?
She was probably cheating on the ghost before he became a ghost with that guy she kissed.
Extremely uneventful
Wrong
sbse ghtiya movie bosdi walo ne time khrab kr diya pura boring hd se jayda
Liked this video, disliked the movie.
It doesn't make any sense that the first time piano is bumped by a ghost, at the begging of the movie, and then after the main char dies, he can't see a ghost that was there. How da faq can he see another ghost version of him by the end and not previously from the beggining. The first ghost couldn't have read then note cuz it wasn't even written, so he definitely didn't find clousere.
It is just streight stupid.
Hope u understend what i'm trying to say, despite my bad english.
If I knew this video sums up everything I've seen in a hour and a half long movie, i definitely wouldn't watch it, it's so boring and depressing. The only thing I liked is an explanation of the universe by that hippie guy at the party.
this movie was piss bad dont watch it lol
This movie sucks period!😡😡😡😡
This extremely slow-moving piece of trash that I had the unfortunate experience of viewing prompted me to write. I hated this "movie", that could have been easily outdone by an 11-year old. It was extremely boring, tedious and frustrating to sit through and I just kept on waiting for it to get better. But it never did. There was absolutely NOTHING I found poignant about the story, Just a pretentious piece of garbage that I HATED. No sympathy for the "ghost" when he terrorizes an innocent family having dinner. The worst "movie" I have ever seen in my 64 years on this planet. Stay away from this piece of junk at all costs!
Summary: A Pretentious Waste Of Time
