In May 2000, in the Roombeek quarter, full of early 1900s factory workers' homes, a fireworks depot exploded, totally destroying several city blocks. Luckily, by the time the big explosion came, most of the quarter had already been evacuated because the big explosion had been preceded by a number of smaller explosions, but still, hundreds of homes were totally destroyed and the area had to be fully rebuilt. I lived in Enschede at the time, at some 5 miles from "ground zero", and could feel the shockwave of the big explosion...

14:15 Those bells are called a carillon. It's an old dutch tradition to play musical tunes using the churchbells. A carillon consist of at least 23 cast bronze bells. The old dutch used to be masters in casting metal. The very best in europe. Bells, cannon and fire arms.
Town Halls do have them too, and usually on the market square, so they play while people shop. Melodies can be according the season, but also tributes to artists or celebration of an event. Bells, carillons and clocks are still produced in Asten in Brabant, by Eijsbouts. They made the really big one for the Notre Dame in Paris. It wasn't damaged by the fire.

Twente is written without the 'H'. Another province is called Drenthe, with the 'H'. In Dutch it sounds similar, so people are confused with the spelling. BTW, it is pronounced Twen-tuh and Dren- tuh.
Mopeds when the blue shield shows a bike and a moped... when the shield only shows a bike, the mopeds have to stay on the mail street, and mopeds with a blue number plate can stay on the bike path, they are slower...
My brother also grew up in Bunschoten-Spakenburg. But after the University of Utrecht. He went to the University of Enschede. He also built his house there. Much cheaper than in Bunschoten-Spakenburg and the rest of the "Randstad." The Van de Valk hotel, is located just outside the center of Enschede. And is more affordable. A beautiful new hotel.
You were spot on with the pronounciation. indeed without the H. For renovation there is usually an historic eye on its previous function. If the buldling structure is solid, like from the 60’s or 70’s or later it can be repurposed for housing. Sometimes the city decides to just keep the facades only, and rebuild the rest, or keep a conceete structure and build the rest up again, new walls and all. iI find it is really cool, this rebuilding and keeping history. It may not be the cheapest option, so we also remove and replace at times. I’ve witnessed an old concrete structure of a school being modernised in Utrecht, it is really cool. putting down a new concrete structure can be pointless, repurposing sometimes works quite well. There are indeed structures that are so old, it may be a good idea to restructure them, encasing them in glass, or reinforcing them with modern materials, so you are spot on with that. I love how you look for history and monuments. City centers are usually free for bikes, mopeds and electric bikes, but as it is a pedestrian area, they go first, this way of guiding traffic is in place in many city centers in The Netherlands. I am not from Enschede, but I’ve been there many times. Love twente, no nonsense, straight forward mentalitly there. ❤
I think that also a village with 6000 inhabitants. Must have a cozy center, with a number of terraces. That is also where you as residents see and get to know each other. The Twentec buildings where the main offices of the textile industry its a apparment buiding now. Twentec comes from Twenthe textiel (textile). When it comes to bike lanes bicyclists fatbikes and scooters are allowed to ride upon them just not motorcycles or above.. i think there's specific rules for scooters when and where they can ride on certain roads like the road and bicycle road but thats just purely for when you're wearing a helmet or not but nobody really gives an F and do it anyway (in my city at least) i think that if you don't wear a helmet you can only drive on a bicycle lane but with a helmet you can alter between road and bicycle lane or only drive on the road.. its been a while since i last read on traffic laws here in The Netherlands

I think converting buildings has to do with how they were build in the first place. In the US it's often just a wooden frame to hold up dry wall and planks. And wood will have all kinds if issues, and dry wall is not reusable, maybe lesd piping as well. Over here it's a concrete frame, with concretes support walls and concrete floor, and brick outside wall.Lead piping has been banned and actively removed here since at lest 80s. So it's easily reusable.
Often it is indeed more expensive to convert old buildings than build a new building. This has in most cases to do with modern regulations, practicality, energy efficiency, infra structure in the building (water, energy efficiency, electricity) etc Converting old factories and offices to apartments is often the choice to preserve industrial and architectural heritage.

It is something I seriously dislike in cities with trams and trolley-busses, the cables lining the streets. Less is better. Nijhuis Klompen in Beltrum. Nowhere in Dutch do we have the sh sound like you're making, the sh like shit or ship we don't have, sch like in school or Enschede is pronounced like a clean clear s followed by a g sound pronounced in the back of the throat like when you clear your throat. Move that sound up from the throat to the back of the tongue and you've got the g like goedemorgen or goededag.

It was a very small market city, until the late 1800s when the textile industry came, and the city grew...
The Fontain in front of city hall is art called "ei van co" meaning egg of columbus. Its a series of elips shapes.

The s is pronounced like the s in suicide and then the ch is pronounced like clearing your throat, nowhere does your tongue meet the roof of your mouth.
Nowhere in Dutch do we have the sh sound like you're making, the sh like shit or ship we don't have, sch like in school or Enschede is pronounced like a clean clear s followed by a g sound pronounced in the back of the throat like when you clear your throat.
Move that sound up from the throat to the back of the tongue and you've got the g like goedemorgen or goededag.
