De stam is actually very similar in English - the stem of the verb is the root of the verb! By the way, the verb to will also means to want in English, tho it is also used a lot instead of shall (shall = zullen) nowadays to form the future tense, but its true / original meaning as an actual verb is to want / to will to do something, which is also used a lot in sentences such as ‘not willing to do that’ and ‘not willing to go’ and ‘will ye, nill ye’ etc as a verb, and in the phrase ‘against my will’ it is used as a noun, because in English every verb can also be a noun, and also an adjective if it’s the past participle, just like in Dutch - there are two verbs in Old English, willen & nillen, which mean (to) will / want and (to) not want, and the verbs to will & to nill directly came from those two, but in English the word want (which means for / because in Dutch) was actually used as a verb, and nowadays it is used as the main verb that means to will / willen something, however, the verb to will is still used with its original meaning, same as shall, especially in England and in rural areas in the US, and also in lots of movies / stories / poetry / lyrics / plays as well as in books / writings / textbooks etc, so luckily these verbs haven’t completely fallen out of use, tho to will is not used as much as the verb to want and shall is not used as much as will as an auxiliary verb to form the future tense! English & Dutch are so similar in many ways - the word order can be quite different, but in general, Dutch is very close to English, so it’s super easy to learn!
I’m so happy I found your channel! I’ve been using Duolingo to teach myself Dutch for over a year now and whilst I’ve learned a lot, it’s so frustrating that you don’t get explanations when you need them. You are a great teacher and I’m excited to use your videos to help me learn Dutch ☺️
Duolingo actually had notes on some grammar rules, pronunciation and such two years ago, but deleted them from app, you could Google "duolingo Dutch tips & notes" and find them. But anyway, this channel is good supplement for beginners, ty Kim
I've duolingo taught myself for a while in a few different languages and I've come to find that it is a helpful resource that is good to learn some things, but it is important to have other things that can help clear some confusion. Kim is very good for that
@multishinyumbreon I'm not sure about that as Duolingo only teaches you the very basics of a language but nothing if all the necessary stuff that makes you able to speak and know a language correctly!
18 maanden geleden begon ik Nederlands te leren met Duolingo, maar ik was niet nuttig en toen vond ik je kanaal en je Patreon. Toen begon mijn leren pas echt. Ik heb ook 2 docenten op ITalki. Je bent een geweldige leraar.
It's crazy how much it helps to learn a second and third language. I speak Spanish and English, and not very long ago I started learning German for curiosity and I just thought it as a quite useful language to learn (second most native speakers in Europe, first one is Russian), similarity to Dutch and other germanic languages, etc. At first, German grammar sounded quite strange to me, like putting verbs at the end. Now, learning Dutch grammar I am just like: yeah, of course, everything makes perfect sense. It is not only very similar but even easier than German. I do not know why, but I feel like it makes more intuitive sense putting the conjugated verb first and then everything else, than the way it is done in German, where you put every verb at the end and then comes the conjugated verb.
THIS THO. LOL The scene which you so expertly dramaticized at the beginning of this video is a scene that I have personally experienced so many times with Duolingo. Duolingo is an amazing resource for dabbling in learning some basic vocabulary and grammar via context and example, but the lack of explanation or instruction can be incredibly frustrating. That's why I really really appreciate people like you, Jason Bond, and others who take the time to offer free, basic instruction on the internet. Combined with immersive materials, starting with children's books, you can go a lot farther than you can with Duolingo alone.
Kim is the best online teacher I have ever came across! I've followed her for years and I learnt so much. Besides I even joined her Patreon because she is the best and there is so much to learn from her and to make things clear! You are the best, Kim! Be always like that! ❤❤❤
Your short videos+ your online courses are by far more useful then some classes that i have attend, i almost gave up about learning the language but your teaching method gives me hope. Thank you Kim🙏🏾💯
Dutch is too pretty not to know, so one should never give up on trying to learn it, and I highly recommend learning it to a native speaker level, as the words are so gorgeous - Dutch / English / Norwegian are the easiest languages ever, so I learned Dutch to an advanced level fast, as I focused on it for about three or four months, tho I started learning languages on my own last year in October or November, but I am actually learning 15+ languages at the same time, and I know over 8.500 base words in Dutch at the moment, and I noticed that most of those words have already become part of my automatic Dutch mode, so I can instantly process / understand them in Dutch without having to translate them into English in my mind or think about the meaning, because I have seen those words so many times over a period of time, and I also noticed that the beginning always seems difficult and overwhelming in every new language, but it gets easier and easier as one learns more and more new words, and it gets super easy after one learns at least a few thousand words, and once one knows about 5.000 words in the new language, one starts picking up a lot of new words and phrases naturally as one sees them being used in context, so when I got to an upper intermediate level (about 5.000 words) I started watching a lot of videos with the Dutch sub on, and I focused on the Dutch sub, and I also started watching a lot of videos that have both the Dutch sub and the English sub hardcoded and where they speak faster, because I could understand most of the words and sentences at faster speed, and I always rewatch almost every video multiple times, over a period of time, and I noticed that I could understand almost every word (that was used in the videos that I watched) after rewatching the videos several times, and now I am advanced level, so I can understand over 99% of the words used in almost every video, and there are usually only 5 new words in each new video, sometimes only one new word, and in videos on topics such as science / medicine etc there are more new words, sometimes 10 to 30 new words, depending on the video, so I usually type those new words I come across in a Draft or in a comment or something, and I repeat them multiple times, every 3 days or so, until I can remember each word automatically!
Old Norse is also one of the prettiest languages I’ve ever seen, it has real gorgeous words like erfiði / yfir / haf / vindr / dyn / skegg / dróttinn / veit / drengr / fjall / hǫnd / fisksins / lengr / hvassir / rauðr / hvarr / grænn / hvat / líkligr / hǫss / afi / frændi / heitir / veð / hráka / þó / kvern / mælti / hét / setja / hinn / kveða / sinn / leið / brott / knerri / við / dýr / með / heyra / eða etc, and the word endings (like nir and inn and sins etc) and the letter combinations are so pretty, just like the word endings and letter combinations in English and Dutch and Norwegian - I can’t stop learning new pretty words in Old Norse and Icelandic (and the other pretty languages) and they are really áddìctive to look at and read and hear in lyrics etc, I’ve been listening to Skáld songs in Old Norse and Icelandic since I found the first song in Old Norse (Troll Kalla Mik) and I’ve memorized most of those lyrics!
Some of the prettiest Welsh words are derwen / nest / afon / talar / adeilad / helygen / afal / hyd / lolfa / enaid / bedwen / neithiwr / ynys / nos / sydd / noswaith / ers / mynd / rhosyn / eistedd / gwych / tân / fawr / telyn or delyn / ynddyn / llaw or dwylo / doeth / fewn or mewn / gwar / bys / ffynnon / swrn / tew / blin / mynydd / braich etc, and Welsh reminds of Dutch because they have a similar intonation / vibe and they both have the soft CH (H-like K-controlled) sound and many of the words have similar types of letter combinations - Welsh is a category 1 language, and Breton / Cornish are also category 1 languages, just like Dutch and English and Norwegian etc, so they are very easy to learn, and have mostly pretty words, and I am beginner level in Welsh and in the other 5 Celtic languages!
Ik was al begonnen met Duolingo om mijn tijd in de trein ervoor te gebrujken om mijn Nederlands te verbeteren. Ik was gewoon nieuwsgierig en voor een tijdje vond ik het ook leuk. Additionally, the style of the classes is very creative and engaging, with role playing, etc. I've become a huge fan, not only as a student but also as a teacher.
I started learning Dutch only three weeks ago (on Duolingo!). I'm enjoying it, and this was VERY helpful. We live in France near Belgian Flanders, and we go to Flemish-speaking Belgium very often. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you Kim.
Hey Kim, I've been tuning into your channel for a while now, and I've gotta say, I really dig this format. I mean, I found it super easy to grasp compared to when you explain the same thing in Dutch. This is just my personal view. Anyway, thanks a bunch, and please keep up your awesome work! Cheers!
I notice you speak English with an American-Dutch accent and the English vocab you use is US rather than UK. Did you live in America for a time? I must add, I find your videos the best Dutch language resource yet! Many thanks Kim.😀
Great video. Duolingo is a great app/website to learn a language. But it lacks the thing about explaining behind the fact how a sentence or a word is formed. I'm glad that there are people who explain it out here on UA-cam. :)
I think your explanation is quite useful,; one needs to be an autonomous learner though. I speak German so it's helped me understand the Dutch structure. I'm noticing the perfect present also uses "to go"' or "to have", I assume, as in German.
Hello Duch learners! I've been learning Dutch for about a month now. Quite an enojoyable pastime! I am however quite confused regarding the pronunciation of words that end with "-en". Let's take this sentence for example: "honden lezen boeken". Both Duolinguo and Google translator drop the final N in each word. They pronunce this as if it was "honde leze boeke". On the other hand, when I listen to tutorials on youtube where human beings speak, they never drop the N, it's audible very well. I'm wondering what the correct pronunciation is. Could you help me figure this out once and for all? Dank je wel!
There is no “correct” form, but most Dutchies drop the N, also me in colloquial speech. Only here on UA-cam I speak more clearly, as do the other teachers I assume, and therefore we pronounce every letter more carefully ☺️
I would like to add to the praises of Learn Dutch with Kim. I have been using Duolingo for a number of years now. I have been studying very diligently and have well over 2.1K days in a row. But I always seem to reach a point where my brain isn't processing what I am hearing. I can read it but it seems that I don't have a strong enough foundation in grammar. This has already started to happen to me with Dutch when Duolingo presented some conjunctions-without any real explanation. It was like I fell off of a cliff. Without a chance to ask questions, Duolingo is of limited use and the beginning of this video explains the problem very well. Duolingo is robotic, sort of AI and not really helpful once you move beyond the basics.
@@learndutchwithkim Back then it didn’t but now it does! Well recently ish! It made REALLY learn to appreciate your country’s history, culture, landscape and food! 😃🇳🇱🧡 Same for Belgium’s too! 😃 🇧🇪 I still use it every single day and I’ve even got a three year streak! 😃
Jasper (a regular customer at a restaurant in Rotterdam): "Hey Willem, what's up? Looks like business is slow? Where is everyone? Usually it's crowded here at lunch!" Willem: "Not sure, but suddenly all these men decided to go ride their bikes to Amsterdam. I think this lady Kim told them to."
DuoLingo is absolute mess for learning Dutch! I`m sick of vocabulary they provide for Dutch. "Turtle is not reading a newspaper", "Pig is wearing hat" - they keep offer you such a mess in every second sentence.
To be frank with you, the app is more or less like a question and answering session. I don't get any insight from that. Just that I try to practice. If I make mistake, then it corrects me without any vivid explanation unlike what you do
Kim, your videos are the best! They are fun and I've learned a lot from them. I also think Duolingo has its points. Simple repetition of patterns is good reinforcement. It's how a child learn to speak (they don't know a modal verb from a preposition, yet they learn anyway). I feel like you complement each other. BTW, you should make more videos with that platinum wig! ;-P
Hii, I have a different question I've seen both: dank u wel and dankuwel (same with dank je wel and dankjewel) But when is is written together or separated? ...
I wouldn't solely rely on Duolingo to learn a language - but it is better than 15 minutes of doomscrolling. Duo voice recognition is much better than Babbel - even if it is bizarre.
I'm now confusing the herbs. Holy shit, this langauage is really, really really difficult, Kim. Respect to all people who study Dutch. it may be difficult, but you have the best teach you can get And when you're fluent, you've really accomplished something. PLUS you can use it all over the world in almost all of the 3 counties AND 6 islands where they speak it . Hihi joking Dutch is Cool, it's my Jam. Jokes are funnier. Humor, sarcasm, irony and every other stylefigure feels like they were made in the dutch language. Dutch provides rhe tools to be more direct in all sorts of offensive or a bit less offensive ways, act clueless and blame it on our Hard G and hide behind our big Mouths. Oh and what about Dutch music? That pretty much really sucks balls for most part. Sorry, we can't win m all. Not even when adding a little alcohol, I hear you ask... NO... Still really sucls. You'll be an alcoholic way before you find mediocre music.. .. Recap: Tiny Cool country, cool language, cool peeps for rhe most part. A STELLAR dutch teacher.. In no time you"ll be bitching about everything wiith the rest of us and that makes it harder to find a place that gives this comfortable freedom.

🦉 Duolingo is not good for really learning a language mor to get to the nuances of its grammar. I’ve tried in languages I more or less know and Duolingo is very insufficient.
I have to add that I've been in Nederlands for 3 months only and I tried sooo many UA-cam channels to learn, but now I almost exclusively listen to yours and I am making real progress between your channel and duolingo... Dutch people in daily life tell me that what ever little Dutch I speak is really good considering it's only 3 month, they especially complement my accent (which I caught from your channel). So thank you, you are an amazing and top level teacher

There is no “correct” form, but most Dutchies drop the N, also me in colloquial speech. Only here on UA-cam I speak more clearly, as do the other teachers I assume, and therefore we pronounce every letter more carefully ☺️
My only attempt at learning Dutch was Duolingo. I stopped at the negative as it wouldn’t explain why I was wrong in forming the negative.
You’re a great docent
I’ve been using this app to learn Dutch for years! XD
And it works wonders, just doesn’t explain things :)
@@learndutchwithkim Back then it didn’t but now it does! Well recently ish! It made REALLY learn to appreciate your country’s history, culture, landscape and food! 😃🇳🇱🧡 Same for Belgium’s too! 😃 🇧🇪
I still use it every single day and I’ve even got a three year streak! 😃
Wow, I didn’t know and congrats!
@@learndutchwithkim Thanks Kim! 😊👍
Dat is lief van jou
Bedankt !!
infinitief&persoonvorm, infinitief&persoonvorm, stam
Goed zo! Maar een werkwoord kan niet de infinitief en persoonsvorm tegelijkertijd zijn :)
I like the white hair look! Very leuk!
Dank je ☺️
@@learndutchwithkim Hoe gaat het met de salsa?

Dankjewel, Kimmy ❤
Graag gedaan, Joke ;-)
I am too much used to german and I translated the second sentence with fietsen gaan at the end and not gaat fietsen 😅
Respect for you!
Thanks ☺️
Excellent Teaching! Dank!
Graag gedaan!
Jasper (a regular customer at a restaurant in Rotterdam): "Hey Willem, what's up? Looks like business is slow? Where is everyone? Usually it's crowded here at lunch!"
Willem: "Not sure, but suddenly all these men decided to go ride their bikes to Amsterdam. I think this lady Kim told them to."
Whahahahaha!!!
DuoLingo is absolute mess for learning Dutch! I`m sick of vocabulary they provide for Dutch. "Turtle is not reading a newspaper", "Pig is wearing hat" - they keep offer you such a mess in every second sentence.
The apple speaks a bit of Dutch

Learning dutch from you and at the same time using duolingo got me like 😤😤😤. I have uninstalled the app and I am going to give you my focus asap
Ahhh, you can use the app for learning words and phrases! It’s wonderful for that 😊
and then come to my channel for explanations ;-)
To be frank with you, the app is more or less like a question and answering session. I don't get any insight from that. Just that I try to practice. If I make mistake, then it corrects me without any vivid explanation unlike what you do
I think it will be better, I learn it here and practice it over there. How about that?
Kim, your videos are the best! They are fun and I've learned a lot from them. I also think Duolingo has its points. Simple repetition of patterns is good reinforcement. It's how a child learn to speak (they don't know a modal verb from a preposition, yet they learn anyway). I feel like you complement each other. BTW, you should make more videos with that platinum wig! ;-P
Yes I think the complementation works perfect! Also using Duolingo for my Spanish ☺️
Bedankt ik begrijp.
dank u well😊
This exactly captured my frustration with DuoLingo. DuoLingo is great for vocabulary, but awful for learning the rules of grammar.
jij bent geweldig
❓️Ik heb een vraag over zinnen met twee werkwoorden bijvoorbeeld:
Hij gaat naar zijn werk lopen
of
De man gaat naar Amsterdam fietsen.
Ik vraag me af of het een grote vergissing zou zijn om een tweede werkwoord voor het woord NAAR te zetten. Ik heb gehoord dat in het geval van langere zinnen het tweede werkwoord vóór het voorzetsel kan staan, en niet noodzakelijkerwijs aan het einde van de zin. Klopt dit? 🤔
Ik zal dankbaar zijn voor hulp! 😊
Trouwens, je video's zijn geweldig! Je doet geweldig werk! 👏
Ja dat klopt, dat kan!
1. infinitief + persoonvorm
2. infinitief
3. stam + persoonvorm
Is this good ? 😄
Yes, but a verb cannot be infinitief and persoonsvorm at the same time, even though in this case it has the same form. So 1 is only persoonsvorm.
@@learndutchwithkim Oh, I get it now, dank u wel Kim! 💗
Hii, I have a different question
I've seen both: dank u wel and dankuwel (same with dank je wel and dankjewel) But when is is written together or separated? ...
The correct one is separated:)

OMG i feel this frustration so much 😂
Hahaha, sorry!
Good
This video can actually save at least two months of Duolingo 😅
THATS LITERALLY MEEE 1:15 OMGGGGG I HATE DUOLINGO
In België doen ze veel dingen vaak net een beetje anders ;-)
❤❤❤
Very very beautiful ❤
You look Mooie !
There's a lightbulb going off over my head. Thank you! And, yes, Duo the uil is not nearly as informative.
😊 you’re welcome!
I wouldn't solely rely on Duolingo to learn a language - but it is better than 15 minutes of doomscrolling. Duo voice recognition is much better than Babbel - even if it is bizarre.
Duolingo teaches me: De Appel spreekt een beetje Nederlands 😅 or Ik ben een banaan 😅
Whahahaha
I'm now confusing the herbs.
Holy shit, this langauage is really, really really difficult, Kim.
Respect to all people who study Dutch. it may be difficult, but you have the best teach you can get
And when you're fluent, you've really accomplished something.
PLUS you can use it all over the world in almost all of the 3 counties AND 6 islands where they speak it . Hihi joking
Dutch is Cool, it's my Jam.

Dat zou gaaf zijn!
I closed the Duolingo and opened this video 🙈
So it was meant to be! ;-)

I had to omit fencing for two weeks! :/
Oh yeah! Even though seatbelt rose MAY sound funny! It kinda makes sense! It CAN sort of form the shape of a seatbelt on your body if you’re misfortune enough and shingles DO look like as pink as a rose!
But why is “origin”/“origins” “ear jump”?! “Oorsprong!” 😝😝😝😂😂😂
What? Does the story told jump from ear to ear?! 😂😂😂

🦉 Duolingo is not good for really learning a language mor to get to the nuances of its grammar. I’ve tried in languages I more or less know and Duolingo is very insufficient.

Well, Duolingo doesn't really teach anything, but it's good free memorization practice..
Very true!
Duolingo isn't perfect, MAAR it helped me a lot as a beginner. It's the perfect ice breaker.
I agree!!
I do not use Apps!!!.... for me works best the treaditional way, going to the street and try to speak, movies, books etc. and study.
