  • Hi! I'm Giulia.
    Ciao! Mi chiamo Giulia.
This is the ongoing story of two crazy people and 6 cats trying to overcome chronic illness and build a forever home for our little family. We have just moved to Italy to buy land and set up our homestead all over again. We moved because I have Idiopathic Syringomyelia, which affects my nervous system. So come along for the ride, it will be an interesting one.
This video marks my one year anniversary in Italy. It felt as though it just snuck up on me. I cannot believe how much time has passed already. We have had some interesting ups and downs along the way. Now that we are a stable living situation and the cats are healthy and safe we can finally start working on our future here.
My husband is still waiting for his permit (permesso di soggiorno). It shouldn't be much longer now. Especially since he has been here for 10 months already. Once he has his permit we can set our plans in motion.
This one year anniversary has another interesting surprise. I'm pregnant! We had no plans of growing our family but it would seem that we were bound to have something change our course. Having syringomyelia makes it a little tricky but not impossible. I want to share the journey to chat about the medical system in Italy and what it has been like having a rare and chronic disease while being pregnant.

Glad for your news. You are very brave to go ahead with everything. Personally, I would not manage without medication.
Can I ask why you can't take medication?

Sure, yeah. I struggle with medication as a main form of pain management. I have taken a lot for many years and over time I started to become tolerant to the ones that did work. The ones that didn't caused adverse reactions. Eventually it got to the point where the medication I was on caused severe symptoms themselves. Including losing my memory, insomnia, intensified brain fog and so on. It eventually became a bit of an addiction as well. I couldn't work and just showing up for the day was difficult so I changed my ways. I'm much better now. At the moment things are difficult which is affecting my mood. But now after years of recovery from the medication I do take medication when I need it. So, I'm not opposed to it by any means. I just found a balance that works better for me.

This is nice to see and follow.
Honestly the area you live near is really pretty, that first year or moving somewhere new is definitely a Journey, ill try to check up on you!
Id also love to ask you some questions on how your health-care has been in italy, i think with people with chronic illness health care is a much more different subject even more so when you have chronic pain. Would you say italy has been taking care of your pain so far?

Thank you! Honestly, so far the experience for pain management has not been great. I will make more videos as I experience more of what Italy has to offer.

@@urbanyolk man that is tough as nails, I know this is probably something you've definitely done but as silly as it is, has massaging helped? Silly I know but I guess depending on how bad your muscular pain gets I think massaging certain parts can help, even more so if your partner is able to help.
Stuff is hard no matter where you turn depending on the situation. Here's hoping you'll feel better. I bet even making videos can be tough too, keep doing what ya can!

@@PringleTheOne it does help to a certain extent. The problem with it is that it can aggravate the pain and muscular spasms as well. It is a little unpredictable. For now hot showers are my best option when I feel up to it. Some exercise typically helps too. Keeping up the strength but with the pregnancy it is much harder to do.
May I ask, do you also live in Italy?
