The Brahos Coffee Shop mentioned in the video was owned by my grandmother and grandfather. My mom was a Brahos. I grew up in Hammond and graduated from Hammond High School in 1962.

I loved going to Hammond as a kid, the Army Navy Surplus store, the Magic Shop and the little Diner across from the movie theater.

I lived in Hammond from 1950 to 1965 - downtown was the best!! Took a bus to get there every weekend!!

It’s sad it is totally gone. We walked downtown about every day in the summers. Goldblatts had a great cafeteria. The sidewalk sales were fun. But you can’t live in the past.

Wow I grew up on the East Side of Chicago and never knew Hammond had all those retailers. I only recall Goldblatts.

Growing up in the shadow of Chicago I never really appreciated what a vibrant city Hammond was until it was no longer there.

I worked at JC Penney from the mid 70's, and fondly reminisce about Saturday SIdewalk Sale Days ("Old Fashioned Days") and the many Mom & Pop stores that survived and thrived throughout the decades. I look forward to seeing this fully-complete film, but please don't forget to mention "Cam Lan Restaurant", the one featured in "A Christmas Story"! I have never eaten better Chinese food than in this gem... and that includes San Francisco's Chinatown!

I loved downtown in the 70's and early 80's. Sidewalk sales day with the little fest. Jupiter's. Gold blatts. Indiana hotel with the old fashioned elevator with the gate. The Walgreens that had the restaurant in it with the best cheesecake. Demars restaurant. The Manhattan restaurant with Mide hair beauty shop next door .The Army Navy surplus. So much more. My mom was a waitress at the Manhattan for years and Demars

Would like to see some of the industry we had in the north Hammond area, ie, American Steel Foundries, Queen Ann Candy, My first job was as a clerk at Woolworth's in 1952/53. I have wonderful memories of Hammond. Graduated from Hammond Tech in 1953.

It was so safe back in the 1960s-1980s. You could walk downtown without ANY FEAR. We used to go to the Parthenon Theater, Goldblatts, Woolworths, Army Navy Surplus, and many others. They had EVERTHING in Hammond.
I believe the downfall began when the steel mills began shutting down and River Oaks mall was built.

In 2010 it was the 5th largest city in the state, hardly a small town! 2019 estimate is 8th largest. Been here 64 of my 66 years.

Hammond is slightly over 100,000 in population, not all that small.

I'm a leading edge Boomer -- grew up in Hammond during 1950s and early 1960s, graduated Clark 1966. Hammond was, and still is, NOT a small town! During its post WW2 heyday, population exceeded 100,000; population has dropped in recent years to more like 80,000. I think it seemed / seems bigger because it is part of the greater Chicago metro area (which includes NW Indiana).

I'm from NYC so any population under 1million is small in comparison haha. I genuinely want to visit all the towns in America one day. They have a lot of history.

Let me guess, failed urban renewal, interstate highways, middle class flight, and than industry shutting down all lead to the decline of downtown Hammond Indiana.

I do believe another issue was the construction of River Oaks mall in the Calumet City area that took quite a bit of business away from the late 70's onward. By the early 80's the only attraction for me was the Army Navy store, though it was a really good store.

Freight trains, lack of free parking and cheap commercial building owners killed off Downtown Hammond.

Paul Newman did NOT campaign for Bobby Kennedy. He campaigned for Gene McCarthy. I should know -- he came to the house across from ours during the 1968 New Hampshire Primary.
