I never understood the appeal of these shows, it was just people yelling and spouting nonsensical takes. It really made sports discussion with people around me incredibly toxic, and honestly just affected my overall enjoyment of sports for a good period of time.

Like it or not Skip Bayless is the father of hot take journalism. I've never been able to stand the guy and I'm a Dallas cowboys fan so that says something. I saw one really good thing that Skip Bayless did and it was about his family and how he basically had no ties with them at all and he explained some of the reasons why. I had no idea that famous Chicago chef Rick Bayless was Skip's brother. It never occurred to me because the two people couldn't be any more different but both of them did reach the highest level in their field. The only difference is there aren't 50 million people out there who hate Rick Bayless.
Yeah, it's just Skip who seems to dislike his brother, but he doesn't totally clarify why, just that there's some long-term differences that led to estrangement, I believe. Meanwhile, all Rick's done is be the leading advocate for traditional Mexican food in the U.S. versus the Tex-Mex stuff everyone is used to. He's fascinated by his work, educated, and super chill--exactly the opposite of Skip.....maybe that's why Skip doesn't get along with him.
The best part about the Stephen A and Skip debates is that they both found a way to be wrong

I think the best way to talk about skip's era of debate bullshit is to look at the aftermath with a show like first things first on FS1.
That show is 3 friends joking, debating and just having fun discussing sports... And it feels like a breath of fresh air because it's fun. (same with nightcap or pat McAfee in some capacity)
Sports media is back to being fun again while skip was making it exhausting.
McAfee tends to lean into the annoying side of things a lil too much

What made prime first take captivating for me was how the back and fourths would play out and where they would go to.
Seems like all those back and forth trash talk shows eventually the people really start to dislike each other off camera because of the arguments. I remember that show Mike & Mike they hated each other by the end.

I really do believe that part of the reason ESPN is doing so poorly as a business now is their choice to embrace entertainment with sports as a pretext rather than entertainment with sports as the focus. There are channels, like HBO before it became Max, that clearly survived the cutting cable movement, and they did so because they made sustainable program choices, programs that people in 5, 10, 15 years will still see as high quality. There's a world where whenever I watch a clip of an old championship game I also want to watch ESPN-produced commentary about that clip from that time. But I don't, and I think many others don't either. ESPN has been making disposable programming for so long that they now are not the place basically any sports fan who isn't ultra casual goes to for sports commentary. If Disney drops them, ESPN is near over on the front of programming that isn't live and re-run games. ESPN the business couldn't see past the near-medium term, and now it's catching up to them.

Excellent analysis. As someone who came across your channel for the first time your sports media training is self evident here. Great point about Shannon also falling flat on First Take. He’s definitely thriving on his own youtube channel where he can set the tone and control the pace, but First Take is not a successful follow up to his stint on Undisputed.

Damn, I remember watching Cold Pizza before school with my parents -sometimes we would have cold pizza from the night before: synergy! I am a Skip Bayless hater since elementary school. Like, I have brain space taken up by remembering Skip’s tireless hatred of Terrell Owens that really started rubbing me the wrong way after the first couple days of it, and I do wonder what didn’t stick in my hippocampus for me to remember a guy being obnoxious about a quarterback with a penchant for showboating.

So I think Skip might have stolen the phrase & used it multiple times cuz he thought it'd be funny.

I remember the days of Cold Pizza and how it eventually became 1st Take....to see how sports journalist's went from actual journalism to becoming nothing but "hot takes" has been something to see. Now the current zeitgeist of all sports shows revolve around these talking heads giving these takes, instead of just talking about the sport. Its repulsive to me and has turned me off of espn and all these other sports networks.
I feel like the one lifelong sports fan who has never had the slightest interest in hot topic debate shows or segments. That's why I am checking out a Movie video analyzing them instead!

One person that doesn’t get enough credit for making the Stephen A-Skip First Take era so great is Cari Champion. That was the peak of First Take and national
sports debate. She had the look, the voice, and played her part well. She didn’t interrupt, and when she did bring her opinions into the conversation, they made sense and complimented the performative nature of SAS and Skip. Those three together were solid gold. I wish they never messed with that.
Jay Crawford, Cari, Dana Jacobson, Joy Taylor, Jenny Taft used as a stepping stone, it's unforgiving really. Jay Crawford said he couldn't wait to get out of there.

I think the BEST Skip can do is just stick with the podcast, maybe use it as a way to prop up his life story, give people an inside look into the industry or how he got to where he got, but in more detail. Outside of that, I would just let it ride. Folks will remember the years of entertainment and controversy, not this short time at the end.
