    This watercolour tutorial takes you to Cronulla, South of Sydney, on a still smooth day with some rain clouds off in the distance and then I show you how to take that image of the ocean and the surf and turn it into a watercolour.
    paintings can be purchased from: www.scottswinson.com
    Paper: this was painted on Rives BFK Arches 280gsm paper
    Colours: the warm mix of cadmium yellow, winsor yellow and alizarin crimson at the beginning with cerulean blue then the clouds were a mix of winsor blue (red shade) and light red and some more cerulean blue then the sea was cobalt turquoise and the grey of the clouds. The sand was yellow ochre, raw umber and some burnt umber. I used a razor at the end to scrape back to the paper and expose the white of the page.
    Brushes: 2 inch hake, round sable
    Other: 3M magic removable tape for the horizon
    Enjoy! I think I might put in some land mass on the horizon as is in the photo next time I paint!
    What do you think?
    Thanks for watching!

    Wonderful! When you scrape the paper with a razor does that wreck the archival potential of that painting? Would you seal the paper to protect it? Could you save the white areas before hand with a masking fluid or use a dry brush technique to reveal the highlighted portions of the water?

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Julie! If you are using 300gsm paper is can cope with a little scraping. All papers I use are acid free throughout and so scratching back does not affect it from a colouring point of view. The only thing to consider is if the paper has sizing throughout the whole piece of paper like arches cold pressed does or does it just have sizing on top. I could of course use masking fluid but I don't like to have an exact plan when I paint most of the time and go with where the painting takes me to a certain extent so masking fluid has never been my go to. Either scratching, lifting out with a damp brush or PH Martin's bleed proof white or other white paints.
      Hope that helps. cheers Scott

    This is so beautiful!! I love how the light and white part on the right side of the clouds reads so perfectly as sun hitting it...its always cool how a painting will look one way and then suddenly it all falls together.
    Just so beautiful!
    I'm curious about the winsor blue (red shade)...it not a color i have...the other i do...but is there a color that could be similar to that? I have ultramarine and pthalo of course...ummm oh Prussian..Paynes grey...I don't have tons left and can't buy more right now, so, though I would normally experiment a bunch, I'm not as able to...so thought I'd ask your opinion. Obviously it won't be exactly the same color....
    Just wondering what makes that blue work so well and a good alternative...if possible...no pressure!!
    Thanks!! :)

      Hi Jaded Enthusiasms! I'm glad you liked this one it was a bit unusual from a composition point of view! In terms of the colour I think light red mixed with pthalo or pussian would make a good dark. just try a little and see. The reason I like the Winsor Blue (red shade) and LIght Red is that it separates on the page giving a lovely effect and it is really dark while having life. Paynes grey is equally dark but does not have the lift that this mix has in my eyes!

    • @jadedenthusiasms
      @jadedenthusiasms 2 роки тому

      @@ScottSwinson yea, I can see that. I love mixing colors for that very reason..Paynes can be a pretty color, but I mostly like using it to mix a bit in things here or there, not just as a dark on its own...a bit too flat. Both of those blues make a good dark, and then I had a coupon, plus a sale and was able to get the little tiny tiny tube of winsor, red shade, for like $2!! So that was fun...my only "professional" paint so far :)
      Thanks so much for your help...I'm having a lot of trouble with my hands right now, but doing some simple mixing experiments to try different things is a not too painful way of getting a bit of color down, and thankfully watercolor goes a long way :)
      Hope you and your family are all well!!
      Thanks again!!

    Regarding pressing the tape down... Have you ever wallpapered at home? To press the edges (length wise up and down) one uses a wallpaper roller. It works on masking tape .

    Love watching you paint Scott, perfect as it is. A bit of headland may just add an extra interest though. You scare me when you pick up that razor, I always expect you to dig into the paper.

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks June! I’ll have to think about putting something in. It makes me slightly uncomfortable the way it is, but that might make it an interesting painting! Yes the razor does dig into the paper a bit but carefully done it is all good! The only issue is if you scrape off too much it is hard to go back because if you paint over it, that area absorbs the paint more than normal and looks different. Thanks for watching! 👍🙏

      Its funny you say that about some distance mountains. I was willing you to put them in to. However when it was finished I think there is something about the similarity, cleanness and space that may have been lost if you had of put land in. Beautiful as every!

      Red Moon for me this painting as it is has a strange mix of serenity and slightly unsettling due to the perfectness of the horizon. Probably says more about me than the painting! Thanks for watching. 🙏

    This is gorgeous! How would you do a thick layer of foam on the sand? Do you ever use gouache or masking fluid?

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  3 роки тому

      Thanks Sue! I would either scratch back a lot or use titanium white or zinc white gouache. I almost never use masking fluid. You could also leave the white of the page as you paint. Thanks for emailing through the painting. Really good! And you can have land on the horizon or at least so close it looks like it. 👍
