Btw everyone, this setup is nothing like bookshelf speakers and an active sub. Nothing at all like that. These are not subs nor are they powered. The OGY speakers are single driver and there are no crossovers in the system. The result is a wide open, 3D, big and welcoming immersive sound. Very organic and rich sounding as well.
Hi,I'm a musician and been in many different studios, age 50 so now my ears are not what they use to be but I've always liked the sound of car speakers full range ones twin cones, with bass and treble..no crossover love em,my question is if the studios had these speakers, would the final production be better or is it the fact that these speakers enhance the mix they did, would it be the same if they mixed with that set up.
I am so happy that you’re reviewing these delightful loudspeakers. The driver manufacturer is just down the road from my home in southern France in BEZIERS. EMS SARL have been making very high efficiency drivers for decades. I have a pair in a home made setup. The very high sensitivity is a hallmark. Almost all of their production goes to export markets.
If I may comment on the aesthetics - the mounting design for the OGY's on top of the BOB's looks DIY. Furthermore, I don't see how the OGYs are vibrationally isolated. Additionally (yes, there is more), the open top appearance of the BOB looks awful (to my eyes). Maybe the BOBs should come with a (separate) top panel with a stylish rig to place the OGYs and at the same time isolate them.
The answer to your question is the Vandersteen 2C design. Create a rack. Mount 2 BOBs + one OGY on a rack. Wrap cloth around to create a cohesive block design
I just read the review on your site. The way you describe the music is in line with everything I love about single-driver speakers and open baffle bass. When done well it's "just right." Hard to explain until you hear it. Natural, open, detailed but not etched, dynamic but not forced, haunting imaging, etc.... I'd like to see more about using the BOBBs with other speakers. I have a pair of Cube Nenuphar Jr. w/ 2 REL S510s. I love the RELs but I also love open baffle bass and these may be a great option to try.
I’m listening to a vintage Pilot mono tube amp right now, it’s a 6v6GTY tube type, has a few 12ax7s in the preamp stage. The speaker I’m using is a Pionner Pax 30, 15” coaxial driver. Running the combo OB and for vocals and jazz it’s pretty amazing. OB can sound amazing if set up correctly. Unfortunately it’s not always the best with SS gear. All of your gear looks cool tho.
I've really been intrigued by open baffle subs lately -- I think that's the way to go for far more realistic and nuanced acoustic bass. My ultimate setup would be KEF R3, coupled with something like the Bobs. (though maybe a slightly more affordable version) ..
It's funny how people are blown away by open baffles. They are literally the easiest & best speakers anyone can build themselves & the only thing to consider while building one is the baffle width & ofc xo points & types.
Such a shame you cannot let us hear that feeling. I have owned my Lynn Nexusses for think 30 years now and for tharlt price have not heard better. Do have to say that a Tennitis conbined with my "Elder" ears might not find the finer details. Enjoyed your review. Thanks and much enjoyment ! 🤘🦁🤘
Hi very nice system indeed Have you tried the OGY also upside down maybe ? i mean with the full range driver closer to the upper woofer I believe in keeping drivers as close as possible
This is just my opinion. It might even sound better if you just have open FR drivers on the top. More reverb and more dipole sound. I would try it if I were you. Mine are the best speakers I ever heard and they are open 5" FR drivers on top of the boxed woofers (opposite configuration to yours). 😅 I have a filter on the open driver and it's highly modified with cutouts for extended highs, and to simulate a free edge cone. Unique! 😅
What happens to the 180 degree out of phase energy coming out of the back of this 12” drivers? Also the unit you are passing the low frequency signal through is a cross over, all be it only a low pass circuit. Did you try them with alternative sub?
The Maria was tuned specifically to the Ogy & & Bob or You used it with the Amber settings? Is it possible to tune to other than DH speakers regarding the Maria ?
Since you’ve heard quite some high quality systems of all prices and usually wooden warm speakers I wonder what you’d think of the kef ls60 active towers. Have you ever heard them?
These sound best in my room placed where I place mostly all speakers. They are approx 3-4 ft from the wall and 7 ft apart. I sit 7 ft from them. Slight toe in.
Why would anybody pay what these speaker cost. You can build 4 open baffle woofers for less than what they want for one. I use 4 15 inch woofer for my system. The cost is less than $500.00. You don't need an expensive woofer to build an excellent OB bass system.
Since I already have two Rel Subs I’m using with DIY open Baffles, couldn’t I just use them with the source point top speakers instead of the BOB’s ? It may not be the same match , but it would be more budget friendly.
Heck Yes, and I would prefer to have adjustable crossover for this , I Think 125h is too low for the 4 inch driver to get down to. Just something I would prefer to have control of.
For some time I've been using a pair of SVS subs perched on Kallex cubes. This provides the base for a pair of Fostex P-1000 BH, back-loaded horn speakers that look a lot like the OGY. The performance of this setup is surprising, for under 2 grand, total.
My Rel Subs are on the carpeted floor because Rel says that the feet are the proper height to couple them to the floor. They also stack them together, so have you listened to your SVS subs on the floor to hear a difference.
sorry if I'm out of sync here: Am trying to understand if buying a Bluesound Node X is 'overkill' if its being plugged into a 3 grand integrated amp? Would I get to hear the sonic improvements the Node X provides over the regular Node?
Lol, what an atrocious (Frankenstein) looking combination. The Oggy speakers are beautiful, and do indeed benefit from being paired with a subwoofer or two. But not like this. Separate subs allows them to maintain their clean aesthetic and still sound amazing. I know as I have the Oggys paired with a REL sub.
Kinda. These are full range drivers which therefore provide a point source. Drivers which place the tweeter in the centre of a mid woofer, such as by Kef, Tannoy or Fyne also present a point source, but are very different beasts.
Open baffle = dipole behaviour, which means a (damageable) positioning for only one sweet spot in your listening room. Ok for lone warriors. But for two or more listeners ?
Yeah man!! Back in the 70s Tompall Glaser had a set of cornerhorns in his office(large room) at Glaser Brothers Recording Studio. They had the normal NS10s and large JBL main monitors, but no mix left the studio without it being played on the Klipse first. The studio also had a Real large plate reverb in a room in the basement. The had another room set up with a speaker and mic for Real room reverb. It was a very long room. This was the only studio I was ever in that had either of these! All the best, Sonny T

Coaxial makes no sense when you have a single driver. Just call it a single driver. It's not technically "fullrange". EMS calls it "wideband". Just call it a single driver speaker. The rest is jargon.
@@user-xg6zz8qs3qThere are single driver speakers and coaxials. Coaxials are not single drivers and are 2 ways with the tweeter inside the voicecoil tube and these are true point source. Whereas some coaxials are not strictly point source cos the tweeter is 1.5" in front of the woofer (instead of inside the voicecoil tube). Like with most coaxial car speaker drivers.
Yeah it probably lacks soundstage because your listening on a iPhone buddy you at least need to be listening on a decent set of cans and not a craptastic iPhone speaker just saying and even then it still won't do these speakers justice

you are the only reviewer that talks about jazz as a source for evaluation......thanks!!
Not a cross over but it sends all below 125Hz to the base units so a low pass filter, a part of a cross over….

GR Reasearch do open baffle subwoofers with servo controlled drivers.
I would like to hear your impressions of those bass units played with the Ambers speakers, and the Maria amplifier.
Yeah yeah best thing ever until you get the next one to review…
I'd love to see you review Linkwitz's OB speakers.
I built a similar system a few years ago, that I love.
Description sounds like my Linkwitz LX524s. Open baffle bass is different.
They aren't your speakers are way better.. 🙂
Interesting. So many options to consider these days. But with anything, I'm always concerned about servicing, repairs, warranties etc
How do you time align the OGY with the BOB? Is that performed in the outboard module?

It was the Same when I discovered the Triangle Magellan range and especially with the Cello 😊
Interesting. The system looks awkward, though, to be honest. That said, it gives one ideas for diy open baffle.

Hello folks: the front and back wave don't come out the same. The 12" stand have two different size of wings on the side, does all the magic
Review some Linkwitz speakers please
Do you plan to review the new Clayton Shaw Caladan speakers?
I will save a fortune and buy a pair of Fostex and use my own sub with it :P

The answer is so murky. If your room has poor acoustics then the differences between DACs will be null.
Please post a block diagram as it is confusing. Dubious specs.

Oh hey, I already was looking a bit at Ogy!
Do you think the pass labs INT-25 would have enough power to drive the ogy's and 2 pairs of bobs ?
it has the ability to scale well while still retain its magic
They beat any conventional speakers with piano! 😮
So thesignal to OGYs in this setup is not filtered in any way? Do they not go lower than 125Hz?
Why doesn't anyone ever mention the music being played, intro or otherwise, in the description? ;)
