I learned about this phenomenon while studying geriatric social work. So I was really upset when I experienced neurological hearing loss at 35 years old. I'm so thankful that I was aware of this issue. I'm 38 and still haven't gotten hearing aids, so thank you for this video, it reminded me that I really need to invest in hearing aids ASAP.

Having recently paid 6K for hearing aids I find this extremely interesting 🤨 I am glad more people will be able to afford them and have a better quality of life.

I am single sided deaf since 2020 from a tumor. Had a bone anchored implant placed two years ago because of 1) fear of cognitive decline down the road and 2) obnoxious cost of CROS aids vs the BAHS which was fully covered by insurance.
I didn't realize just how much sound my brain was missing out on until my processor was activated! Although restaurants, parties, airports, etc. can cause a lot of listening fatigue, I'd rather be over-stimulated with sound than isolate in silence where my brain is not challenged at all. And on days I do choose silence, usually I'm still doing things that nourish my mind, body, and soul like reading, running, learning ASL.
Anyway, thank you for this really fascinating discussion! I downloaded the postcast episode and will go listen to the rest now. 🙏

We talk about tinnitus in the full episode of ‘Your Brain On... Hearing Loss’! Here’s what reseacher Kristin Barry said on the podcast:
“There's a big study by the Lancet that came out showing that one of the highest modulatory risk factors for cognitive decline is hearing loss. And its role in tinnitus is incredibly new. We're still sort of sussing out what's happening exactly, and wondering what exactly those mechanisms are, if it's just a temporal lobe thing. Hippocampus and memory is really implicated in dementia. And in the temporal lobe, we also have the auditory cortex. So we think the mechanisms might be sort of related and isolated to that.”

Dr. Lin and his team are working on a Hearing Number app (more info: hearingnumber.org/) - in the meantime, their website recommends Mimi, Sonic Cloud, or Jacoti.
