      Hey there! No need to worry this early in the game! Instead, you can use that energy to move forward! If you work really hard there is no reason vet school can't be a possibility! In this video I've outlined a bunch of things you can do as a high school student that can prepare you for vet school! ua-cam.com/video/1gfsoMAD2g0/v-deo.html

      Are sure you know all the requirements. I applied while doing a levels (Uk) and did not get a single offer, but after my results we found out that I needed 1 more A at GCSE. So I’m reapplying with my A levels (AA & B which is 1 mark off an A😠) to the only UK uni that said “it would be stupid to hold you to your GCSEs when you’ve done better in the level above”. If I’m unsuccessful I have to resist a lot of things
      So save yourself literally years of hassle (if you are as serious as I am about being a vet) and know what u need and get them 1st time round 😂

    I wanted to be a vet until I started working at animal hospital.... don't get me wrong I love animals but it's too much, was told many times it would be easier to become a human doctor. Plus vets don't get enough credit for everything they have to do. Props to you girl and every vet student out there

    I’m 18 years old, stating my first year of undergrad in the fall with a bachelors degree in biology along with the pre-vet track. I’ve been in love with science and math from a very young age and I decided that I wanted to be a vet VERY VERY young in my life. This is my dream in life and I’m so excited to get started. Unfortunately I worked my butt off during highschool between my job and highschool to save up for undergrad so I didn’t really have the pleasure of starting my work hours as early as you did but I’m really looking forward to being able to focus on school and my path to being a veterinarian this upcoming year in the fall. Class of 2019 to 2023 here we go!

    Hi! One of the most important goals in my life is to be an awesome mom. But, I also want to be a vet and I'm really excited about all of the things I will learn. I was just wondering if you know many vets who are also moms. Are they part-time vets? Is being a part-time vet a thing? Also, I really like to travel and go hiking and skiing. On average, how much vacation do vets get? Will I be able to go for a Saturday hike? Or do most vets work a lot of weekends? Right now I'm a freshman in college, in undergrad, and I'm tossing career ideas around, but being a vet has stuck with me the longest, I just don't know if it can fit the lifestyle I want (being a mom and traveling). Thanks for any help/advice, I really appreciate the insight!

    Would you be able to make a video that explains what steps you should take in high school in order to prepare for undergrad/veterinary school? I'm in my junior year undergrad currently with an animal science major and a minor in Spanish. I currently have a 3.63 GPA, which isn't low but not as high as I would hope it to be. Do you have any other studying tips besides rewriting notes? Also, did you rewrite your notes more than once? I have thousands of hours of veterinary experience in small animal and equine, as well as animal experience in zoo/wildlife, large animal, small animal and equine. You are an inspiration, congratulations of getting into veterinary school!!

Also my high school that I am going to go to doesn't have a vet program so what should I do.

      Hey! I'm so happy you enjoy my videos! To answer your question, as long as you've completed your prerequisites, you are good to go! Honestly, whether or not it looks good will depend on your application as a whole. I could definitely see it making you stand out as an applicant, you just have to make sure to explain how the experiences/skills that you have acquired through music will help you become a better veterinarian!

    My father is a veterinarian and I always thought I never wanted to go to vet school...until recently. I've been really kicking myself for not going strait out of high school. The thing is I am 22 years old and have a 1 1/2 year old son at home. My dad and many other veterinarians including the Dean of Texas A&M have encouraged me to go ahead and go for it. I have raised my confidence and decided I am going to go ahead and try even though I know its going to be exceptionally hard as a young mother. I figure it will be very rewarding for me even if it takes me double the usual time. Do you have any advice or encouragement for me? Did you know anyone in vet school in similar positions as myself? @BellaVet

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  6 років тому

      I don't know if it will give you a higher chance, but it is certainly not a bad thing! What vet schools like to see is that you have experience as a leader and that you are well rounded. All of the things you listed help with both of those! Just make sure you keep it up in college too!

    I had a question about when you applied, so you said that was in your third year of your undergrad. Does that mean that you were completing your third year at the same time you applied or were you into your fourth year of your undergrad at that point?
    Basically, did you finish your undergrad before you went off to Vet college or did you apply after your second year? I don't know if that makes sense, I'm really trying here. :)
    I'm a high school senior and am trying to inform myself as much as possible so that hopefully less pops up later or last minute!

    What is a good number of hours of veterinary and animal experience to have for the VMCAS?
    I've been working as a veterinary assistant and have gotten just over 400 hours in a couple of months, is this a good starting point? I decided a little late in my undergrad (about 1 1/2 years left) that a DVM is my long-term goal in education, so I'm just trying to catch up and get all of the experience I'll need before applying. :)
    Love your videos!

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому +2

      400 Hours is a great start! By the time I applied I had about 600. But you should know that there is no perfect formula. I have seen people get in with less and some get in with way more. These admission committees tend to look at the applicant as a whole. Also, you should know that some schools have a minimum experience requirement, so you should give the schools you're applying to a call to make sure that you have passed that requirement. But great start keep it up!

    trying to become a veterinarian, about to start my first year of college and I just signed up to volunteer at a dog shelter for animal experience, I was curious as to how you got veterinarian hours? did you just volunteer or were you like a vet assistant??

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  8 років тому +6

      Awesome! Volunteering at an animal shelter is a great start! A large amount of my hours came from volunteering. I would usually start by asking to shadow a vet, from there I would ask if they could use my help as a volunteer. Occasionally the veterinary clinics that I volunteered at would be short staffed (for a holiday or summer) and they would hire me for a temporary position (I was a student so a year long position conflicted with college). Does that answer your question? If you have any more feel free to ask!

I delivered all my resumes and cover letters in person, and got a job as a vet assistant within the week!

    How was organic chemistry for you...? :)

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому +6

      Orgo was definitely frustrating at first, but I learned to like it once I started to think of it as a really big game of catch with electrons being the balls. It is difficult, but I think it is important to remember what the class is actually trying to teach you: diagnosis. Essentially, it teaches you about a new thing and in such fine detail that you couldn't possibly memorize everything. Instead, you have to *understand* it, use what you have learned from your previous experience on similar problems, and solve it (sound familiar to something you have to do in practice one day?). If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask!
      Oh, and if you're ever wondering why the heck you even need to take orgo in the first place, read this!

    I became a drug addict at the age of 14, cheated my way through high school, and I withdrawed from college within my first semester. 4 years later, at 22, I've decided I'm going to be a vet. I fought my way to sobriety, and I'm going back to community college. Once I complete my associates degree, and then switch to a university, will a vet school take me? Basically since I was 15 I've worked at animal shelters full time, so I have the experience, and I know this is what I want to be. I'm just scared since I did so bad in high school, and not going to a great state university at first, if they'll even look at me for acceptance? Any help would be much appreciated.

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому +2

      First off, congratulations on your sobriety, I cannot even imagine the perseverance and dedication it took to make it to where you are now. You are what they would call an "alternative applicant" AKA someone who didn't just go from 4 years of high school to 4 years of college straight to vet school. I want you to know that "alternative applicant" is by no means a negative label. Many times these applicants bring diversity and experience to a class. I believe that if you get good grades, keep working on your experience hours and have some awesome letters of rec, I don't see why you wouldn't be a good candidate. You should also know that it is ok to talk about your past struggles. One interview/essay question I was asked multiple times when I applied was "tell me about a struggle you have experienced and how you overcame it." I think you could write a brilliant essay about that topic. Good luck! You got this! Please keep us updated on your future success!

    Ok this may be a stupid question but I don't know much and I'm an 8th grader so ok Do any vet schools have an Equine program where you could take your horse with you? I mean I know that being a vet student you would probably be very busy butttt?? I gotta know😆

    Hey Bella Vet, I volunteer with Best Friends but I would love to volunteer at an animal clinic but do I have to be in school to get experience? I'm trying to save up money to go back to school and become a Vet Tech.

      Hey! You don't need to be in school in order for your volunteer credit to count for your vet school application! Does this answer your question?

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому +1

      It simply means keeping track of the time that you spend gaining animal or veterinary experience. I kept track of mine in a really long word doc on my computer.

    where did you first start getting hours?

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому +2

      I started getting hours at my local veterinary clinic by shadowing the veterinarian there and then volunteering after that.

      The VMCAS FAQ page is a great resource: help.unicas.com:8888/.../experiences/index.html Here is what they say: "Q: How far back in my career should I list experiences?
      A: You may include any experience you believe is relevant to your application." And I agree. If you felt like that experience really impacted you and your understanding of veterinary medicine, then include it!

    What age should you start trying to get experience?

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому

      I started keeping track of my experience during my junior year of high school, but you can start at any age and you are allowed to include any experiences that you deem relevant to the application. For me, that meant high school, for other people that might mean earlier or later, it all depends on your unique experiences. Does that answer your question?

    • @BellaVet
      @BellaVet  7 років тому +5

      Hey now! Please don't stress about that! Honestly I could make an entire video on just this concept. I really don't love the word "smart" because it makes it sound like doctors and lawyers and people with advanced degrees were just naturally born with the ability to pass tests and remember everything. I just want to let you know that that is absolutely NOT TRUE. While processing information fast in your head can certainly help you, the most important thing is not being "smart" its about working hard! One of my favorite quotes goes something like "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" (Tim Notke/Kevin Durant). And when I look at my fellow classmates I don't see a bunch of geniuses who don't have to lift a finger to pass. I see a bunch of extremely hard working men and women who are putting in the hours to fighting to become more knowledgable. So what I'm getting at here is that if we can do this, you can too! You just have to be willing to work extremely hard for it :)
