Kitchen Table Electronics Repair: Sony STR-DH100 Stereo Receiver

- This receiver had a nasty fall and no power after that. The price was very right, so I decided to look into it and see what was going on. Sony could have used more support and bracing in the construction of this receiver, but to be fair, no stereo receiver designer expects their product to fall off of a shelf.
I do tend to prefer the Sherwood receiver compared to this one. The Sony seems a little more powerful, but I'd give the Sherwood better marks for construction quality. And even though it took a lot of asking, Sherwood sent me a service manual for free. Sony customer service was rude about it the first time and theirs will cost $11.
uxwbill, I love these and all your kitchen table electronics repair videos. You inspired me to get back into restoring audio gear, got sidetracked with other stuff over the last 10-15 years, but resurrecting gear that would otherwise end up in a landfill like this Sony is simple, well..awesome. You can't beat a 100WPC real 2channel receiver for $8 and some TLC. GREAT work sir.
That remind me of when I worked for NCR and while working on a NCR 7780 someone brought me a akia am fm cassette that they left on the unit and started it up and checks went right in the side knocking it off the 7780 and damaged it in 2 places inside I used twist ties from a bag of wonder bread to fix the broken traces.
I love your videos they take me back to the good old days when everybody wanted thinks fixed and not throwing them away.
Thanks
Very nice. I have had to do roughly the same thing with my Kenwood after it tumbled out of the truck when i was moving. Its bent but still works 6 years later. Excellent vid sir.
Great work, I never thought of fixing broken circuit boards like that before.
Bill..you never cease to amaze..what was the biggest influence in your life to steer you in this 'fix it' direction? Grandpa? Dad? both? you all seem to have a knack of wondering why or i am gonna fix it mentality..and do you ever work on tube radios? i would think you would enjoy that..these are great machines of yore, and made in USA(most of them)..
keep the 'repairs at the kitchen table' with Bill coming..rich
Good job Bill! I have done this countless times on damaged electronics (usually because they were literally "thrown out" at the dump). I find that sony seems to make the thinnest and flimsiest PCB I have ever seen. That stuff cracks just by looking at it!
Sir, I love your videos. I really find it so helpful how you basically explain your train of thought as you go through the repair. You are very methodical. Observing you is priceless. I can't thank you enough!!! = )
I also liked your repair. I recently found a sony receiver str de485 near the trush bin as I was walking and I took it, I then saw that it needed some resoldering on the mainboard with the big heatsink, now it plays great. Sometimes people throw away good electronics that need little effort to be fixed and workl again.
I'm glad you've continued this series. You're pretty interesting to listen to. -From an Electrical Engineering Student
WOW, $8.00 A LITTLE REPAIR AND YOU HAVE A WORKING RECEIVER, NOW THAT IS A SET OF SKILLS.
great stuff, my only advice is to tin the leads on the ends of your cables and apply some flux on the board to get a nicer/solid solder joint. You did all the other hard work (scraping off all the green board crap). Keep up the great work & vids!
Got to remember Bill. This thing was made to class 1 standards which is to say dont expect great soldering. More than likely the boards were run over a solder wave. Good patchwork. Ground plane like on the volume control can be hard to deal with since it is very hard to heat up. You did well considering what you had to work with.
@uxwbill i didnt think it would either, because it has current going through it at all times. but i have a powered subwoofer and the heat sync has this white paste over it. did something blow on it?
Hi I have Panasonic sa-ak100 it won't turn on, the light of the button is on but when I push the button it won't turn on, fuse is okay, do you have and idea what can be or where can I get a repair manual? Thank you...
Hello thanks for the video. I have quite a few of these units and an unhealthy number of them develop static on the speakers after a while. Doesn't matter what volume or input. Any thoughts.
I fixed a tv that had a cracked board several years ago. It hadn't been dropped or anything but, a manufacturing flaw. The board slipped into the plastic housing with no screws so the tv could slide apart and the board slip out. When they slipped it in from the factory one corner of the board didn't slip into its slot so it sat on top of the slot and made the board bend, I guess after cycling hot and cold for a couple years it eventually caused it to crack, I used wires to jump across the crack.
Wow, good job! You can't beat a brand-new stereo receiver for $8, a few pieces of wire, and a little sweat!
Seeing as I have the DH100 myself, and my mom has the DH700, I can tell you that they used a lot of components between the two, and that very same display is used in the DH700. Hence the dormant home theater stuff. The HD700 has surround, HDMI, optical...among other things.
did it come with the volume nob or did you have to get another one because you said thats the corner it fell on and i didnt see it on during the repair.
Hello uxwbill. thanks for your video. i have the exact same Sony receiver as yours. my problem is that the receiver is in PROTECT mode. do you have any idea how to get this fix? thank you.
@uxwbill i think it is the relay switch, beccause every time i turn it on. it makes a clicking noise, like its not going through
Do you know how old the stereo receiver is? I noticed it had Blu-ray feature.
is there any possibility that an fl display can be repair'd since i have a sony hi-fi, but the screen is really dim the only thing is these screens are vacume's so im unsure weather its the screen itself or dry joints ?
I have lots of subscription videos to watch and I see uxwbill and I click it first,...
Very Very cool work on this one.. You're a wiz.
I like the idea of getting a remote if the volume did'nt work.
And the twist tie is very crafty.
I learned how to fix broken boards. Thanks
All the best.. keep em coming.
~Cheers~

Hi! Thank you very much for this video.
My Sony STR-KM3 (Argentina model) is turning off right after power on, displaying a "USB FAIL" error message, despite the model DOES NOT having any USB connector?
(I have once repaired the same model, but with USB. The problem was a faulty relay (RY901)).
Any suggestion or hint?
Thank you.
Now those are the satisfying kind of repairs!
It's still working perfectly to this day.
Hey, I've seen some of your vids and i give u kudos for helpin me with some issues, but i was wonderin if u know how 2 fix a JVC receiver. I overloaded it awhile back but none of the fuses blew. I was told by Radio Shack that i'd have 2 take it back 2 Best Buy or company who is certified 2 fix it. Instead of shelling out but loadz of cash i was wondering if u had any ideas wut it could be?
@uxwbill ok, thank you. but will a static charge kill a stereos motherboard?
my stereo has a problem, and it won't turn on. but i looked in the stereo, and all the fuses were still intact, so do you think it might be the relay switch?
Please tell me the color bands for resistors R759 and R760 on the main board by the heat sync please since mine are burnt and i would really like to know
can you tell me what might be wrong with m sony stereo, the musics plays but the sounds comes out chopped up like when a CD player skipps. even in aux/phono mode.
ITSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS ALIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!... Good Deal Sir. ( love that hair style on that other brothers old school) .. god bless all!>
Nice work William!
I want to ask do you fix stereos is that I want to ask if you can fix mine is that only problem is where you connect the speaker wire it side L side works but the R does not work is a Panasonic stereo Integrated Amplifier SU-CH80
I just picked up one of these of eBay and was also wondering the plastic guard on top was for too
Very good deal for a new Sony Product, despite its problems
thank you very much for this video. it is very explicit. i wonder if you can show once more the video about fixing the tv panel. thx. a lot.
ok i have to ask is this a passion o yours and also do you just "hoard" this or sell it all??
hey have a Sony STR-D835. It turns on, but there is no sound. so you have any idea what could be wrong with it?
Hey, i got a sony STR-v55es. when i turn it on, it shows protection plese turn off. PLEASE HELP.
Hello uxwbill, I have a SONY FM RECEIVER
(5B)
MODEL NUMBER: STR-D865
SERIAL NUMBER: 8801483
Blown fuses: 6.3 Amp 120 Volts
The problem seems to be only the fuses. I was told to check the power supply board and all the components on that board. It is not connected to any speakers or cassette, DVD player at all. And it still burns out the fuse. Got any ideas? Sure could use a schematic diagram. Thanks for your valuable time Bill. :)
You were correct @uxwbill with the LCD. My Dad owns a higher model of this amplifier which supports 6.1 channel surround sound as well as a subwoofer. It can also take a massive amount of imputs. It also has a very rare sony lcd controller. Oh and another thing. The relay sound on my dads is a very loud and deep thud.
I had the volume up a little 2 high with 4 12 inch subs hooked up 2 them. It turns on but the LCD screen is blank then after a couple seconds it juss shutz itz self off.
@uxwbill No it doesnt, and there is a relay click. Everything else on the receiver is functional including the display buttons etc. The sound is the only thing not working.
Another sucessful repair, I ought to start getting more into the buy them broke and fix them cheap electronics....ive passed up on too many good deals that I could have fixed.
Oddly enough, ive never seen the Best buy offer broken things, ive seen them sell the demo's but never broken. Now when circuit city shutdown there was a lot of broken things for sale....but that time has come and gone.
Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with something. I started taking apart a radio called a Technics SA-616 with a Quartz Digital Synthesizer, and was wondering if there's anything inside like in a tv that will shock me. Here is a url with some photos of one that looks exactly like mine and shows the insides. I'm curious about what that big black box is.

Okay, they won't let me post a web address so just add the 3w's dot, and dot html at the end.
i got the str-dh130 model and i can't get my equalizer to work. i went from tape out to line in then line out to tape in. audio spectrum works but it won't equalize.
Modern stereo receivers don't properly implement the "tape loop" as old ones did. (There's only one exception that I know of: the Teac AG-790.)
+uxwbill thanks. atleast the analyzer works
i would love know how to fix circuit boards ! great video !
Okay, thank you very much. I appreciate the detailed information.
@uxwbill you should check into selling those on e-bay I dad a couple of pm kits with all the rubbers and rollers that I sold for $150.00 if no go on e-bay some of those boards had gold and silver on them but I would try e-bay first . Those cameras and lenses were over $5000.00 our cost and over $7000.00 customer cost I see them once in a while on e-bay also you probably rember the problems with staples getting caught in the encoder since it had a big magnet in still have the service books
I think the plastic guard is so that no idiots will drop any sort of stuff in the vents when it was a shelf demo at best buy.
No because the slots in the plastic line up with the slots in the metal cover
I have a Sony STR-AV920 that has a cooked output and I need a schematic for this unit. If anyone know where it's available to view please PM me.
nice fix,and nice receiver.All for 8$.what a bargain
Your a smart dude. 👌
Thanks again.
Great video
thank you for sharing =-)
woww cool repairs
good ol fixing!
Do not use twist ties ! they are not rated to 200 volts !
i wish my best buy would sell broken stuff. They just throw it way real quick.
I ment bando power transformer
You can do a better job If you buy ready circuit repair bridges from a local electronic store.
You rule!
@uxwbill youtube partners can go longer than 10 minutes, thats wat dave from davidsfarm said neway
@uxwbill I'll shoot you a PM...lets just put it this way: I can't win for losing!
2 dislikes must be twist tie aficionado's. ;)
Lol, sorry about the web address. But also change the dot in dotcom to a .
