  • In this video, Granny cuts up a whole chicken with the wishbone. Buying a whole chicken costs about 5-6 dollars, and even less if you can find them on sale as Granny did today. Her chicken is a 5.37-pound bird that cost her $3.45. Learning to cut a chicken up can go a long way towards saving money if you're on a tight budget. Save Money and make your chicken go farther with this method.

    My grandma taught me to how cut up a chicken MANY yrs ago, always with the wishbone. And since she was feeding a family with 7 children, she fried the neck and the back for her pieces. I love those parts. I'm now teaching my grandsons how to cook. Tonight they learn how to do this. Great video Granny!!

      I love hearing stories like this! I too have 7 kids. Six are adults now, one is still in high school. I don't cut up my chicken anymore, but it's a great skill to have! Thanks so much for watching! Kudos for teaching those young men how to cook too.

    That is how my mom, a Kansas farm wife, cut up a chicken for frying. We raised a lot of chickens and for years kept a lot of layers. Seven in our family. My favorite summertime meal was and is fried chicken, potato salad, and corn on the cob. My favorite piece of the chicken was the wishbone.

    Finally someone who knows how to cut up a chicken that is how my parents taught us to cut up a chicken.We also cut the back into and made two separate pieces 11 total and my mother would fry them up. Thank you very much for the correct way to cut up a chicken.

    My mom always cut up her chickens, and the wishbone piece was the most coveted part. We 4 kids fought over it. Then we would argue over who was going to make the wishes and break it. She demonstrated her method of parting out the bird for me many times, but it grossed me out. Now that I'm pushing 70, I think I'll try it again. Thank you for your demonstration!

      I'm one of 4 kids too! The wishes were always the best part!! Thanks so much for watching. I hope you do try again! If you do, just take your time and enjoy the memories!

    That pulley bone (that’s what we called the wishbone in our part of WNC) is my favorite piece of chicken but my dad usually got it growing up cause it was his too 😂. My grandmother would often save it for me when her and grandpa had her pan fried chicken. Haven’t had chicken like that in 40 years. Wish I could make it taste like hers did. Brings back great memories.

      My Grandma called it "pulley bone" too! She used to save them after we had eaten them clean. She'd clean it up, set it on the windowsill to dry, then let me and my brother grab an end to pull. We'd each make a wish then see who got the short and long end. Great memories, indeed!

    My grandma always cut the wishbone piece for me and it is still my favorite piece of chicken but hardly anyone does it that way anymore. Now that you have shown me how to do it I’ll be having my favorite piece again soon. Many thanks.

      My mom use to cut the chicken just like that, and I've always missed it. But today I will be cutting the chicken and saving the wishbone that my sister and I always got to break. I'm 75 so I don't have too many wishbones left in my future. ha ha.

    Thank you for showing how to cut the chicken with the wishbone in tack. Todays butchers don't seem to understand how Grandmother did it.

    • @GulfCoastGranny

      I think butchers don't cut this way because it makes the breast a little smaller.
      Happy you enjoyed the video!! Thank you for watching!

      @@GulfCoastGranny I printed a copy of your video for my butcher to view. Maybe he will learn how to cut a chicken. Growing up, this was the only way my mother prepared chicken for frying. And later, my wife’s mother prepared it the same way. Today’s butchers and generation don’t seem to have a clue. Anyway, thanks again. I watched your video 3 times to make sure I got it right.

      Thank you for the kind and thoughtful comment. When I was a young person, boys and men were not invited into the kitchen very often. Most of the time they were outside just "being boys." I'm so glad that my video was helpful to you. Thanks for watching!

    I been looking for a long time how to carve out the wishbone portion. Tried it and it almost worked for me, I need more practice. Very helpful to me was to cut on the stove top, I always tried over and in the kitchen sink and had lots troubles.

    • @GulfCoastGranny
      @GulfCoastGranny  2 роки тому

      It does take practice! I like having something solid under the chicken for support too. A super sharp knife is a game changer as well. Thanks for watching!

    My mom cut up her chicken this way, but she also cut up the back. The back is my favorite piece. Unfortunately I never showed a interest in learning how to cut up a chicken, so she never taught me how😢

    • @GulfCoastGranny
      @GulfCoastGranny  11 місяців тому

      I have started cutting out the back before I start the rest. I've been saving them in the freezer to use for bone broth or chicken stock. Also, my grandma used to "gnaw" on the chicken backs, LOL
