    I am a native English teacher (Canadian) who has been teaching English in South Korea for the last seventeen years. I have a good knowledge of both the phonemic representation and the phonetic reality of American English (which Canadian English is a part). I like your lessons very much.

    I'm an adult who has always been a native American English speaker, but has had Rhotacism/Derhotacization my entire life, and I just came across this video. It was so perfectly detailed and explained that I feel like the mystery of the r sound is finally answered after 26 years! I will 100% continue to practice based off of this video!

    I am also aware of the sounds of other languages as I speak not only English, but French, Russian, and Korean. Those others sounds help me better appreciate the sounds and sound rules of American English.

    Hi beloved teacher,I hope you're fine. i really found your lesson on the R pronunciation very helpful. It's quite difficult for non native speakers such as myself, but your lessons are helping me a lot, and making it easier . thank you so much
    I recently came across a difficult setuation, when "OR" or "OUR" come before some words like : or irregular. it makes it a little bit harder to manage. thank you

    This video was so helpful! Our 8yo (native English) speaking son has been having trouble getting a good r sound, with more of a w sound coming out, and although we've tried a lot of things, this video was far more useful than any of the speech path ones we've found. Getting a beautiful r sound now!

    Mandarin Chinese have that "ending r " sound like American English too. Such as: Er二(means two ), Er儿(means son, children or baby),Er耳(ear).

      For the one with the tongue tip, yes, it's called a retroflex approximate. For the other one, no it's not in Mandarin.

I've been trying to learn the flap t sound for 3 year and i wasn't able to pronounce it right until now.. you saying its pronounced like the (r) sound in some languages was just the explanation i needed. hearing its like a d sound or a sound, between the t and d sounds, never really helped me pronounce it right

    Bouncing the ‘r’ on the roof of the mouth is possible to hold out. Italians, Russians for example can do it. It might not be possible for Americans or English speakers but it is done in other languages.

    I figured out the core point of R is attaching side tongue to inside of side teeth(I hope this is right). I understood I had made wrong position about R. Then, I have practiced the first way. When I looked mirror, the tongue was just like the second way though I intended and thought doing the first way. The front end of tongue followed to high by lifting mid-tongue. I can't control front end of tongue in this case. Anyway thank you very much. Would you make or introduce video to train AR,ER,OR?

    Hi Rachel, thanks so much for this great lesson. I'm still a bit confused about how this sound should be pronounced when it comes in the middle of two syllables like in words 'hero' or 'experience' or 'theory'. Sometimes it feels like there are two 'r's in between. Millions of thanks if you can enlighten me on this😬😬😬

    Hi Rachel
    Awesome videos, you didn't explain how to do the other way,
    Here in California most of the ppl when they saying the word "Erik", I can hear that they flip their tongue backward
    I am just not sure, if that flipping is an on going thing, meaning it happens to roll back as the R coming out of air ways, so you start rolling(it's in motion or no) or it has a static positioning,
    Thx a lot

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  3 роки тому

      Hi! For American English - we always pronounce the R! Even in words like 'faster, lower' - the R is very quick, but pronounced! That should make it easy - just know that when there is an R sound in a word or phrase, say it! :)
