    My mom and I have been making kombucha for almost 2 yrs. I love second fermenting. I have used my old scobis in my 🍅 plants. Also have dehydrated and made into dog chews for my friends dogs. Also just as a tip. I use a coffee filter to place on top of my kombucha gallon jars while fermenting, with a rubber band, so I can write the date and what tea I used. Very helpful! I don't have success with black tea so I use green teas or white teas different flavors. I also keep a little extra starter tea with an extra scobi in a small glass jar just in case I need or a friend needs. Kombucha has Sooooo many health benefits! Success to all who venture on this path!!! It's fun!

      Where can I purchase the large tea bags? I frequently get no carbonation, maybe because I frequently do not add anything for second fermentation. We actually like it plain. I use black caps with a plastic insert purchased from Amazon. I watched your first Kombucha video several years ago when I was learning how to make it. Have shared many scoby’s. Thank you,

    Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on making kombucha. I am up to 3, 1 gallon jars. Still experimenting on what flavors my husband and I like the best. He likes it plain so far! I also was able to produce a Scoby and starter tea for my daughter in law, who is brewing her first batch and is excited to make her own. Wishing you and your family a blessed New Year!

    I picked this up from someone somewhere along my journey and I want to share it because you are not onto it. At least not in this video. When you remove the pellicle, stir the tea. You will stir up the scoby and distribute it evenly through the brew. Then pour off your starter. You will have an instant head when you stir up the brew.

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  5 років тому

      This is something I've learned since my first Kombucha video. It is also something I have never communicated well. Thank you for pointing it out. In my first video I illustrated that I pour my brew from the fermenting jar into a pitcher. This effectively stirs it up well to evenly distribute the bacteria and yeast.

    Feed the scoby to the chickens.
    I cleared out my hotel and then for the first time ever ( I've been making kombucha for 3 yrs) my scoby got mold on it. So had to throw everything out.
    And of course it happened after clearing out the hotel lol.
    So had to buy a new scoby.
    I figure once every 3 yrs isn't bad.
    I have a new batch brewing now.
    My favorite is pear and ginger.
    I haven't tried black cherry so will have to try it.
    I have chronic bladder infections.
    I would get one every 2 to 3 months.
    After I started drinking kombucha I only had 1 infection 6 months after starting kombucha then none since.
    My Dr thought it was odd lol.
    Apparently kombucha will kill off the bad stuff in the bladder that even antibiotic could kill off completely.

    • @nicolep2424

      No need to buy a scoby. Make one to two gallons from one bottle of GT's original kombucha. I usually use a cup and a half. Your new scoby will form more beautiful than ever. All for about three bucks. In fact, about half time I don't use a scoby, just starter.

If so, your method of cleaning them? Dishwasher or vinegar solution? Please let us know your opinion of these bottles once your second fermentation is completed. Did they break? Did they provide good carbonation for your Kombucha?
    I heard that the vessel washed in the dishwasher may have some dishwasher liquid soap inside the vessel so it’s a good idea to rinse with filtered water before using.

      These jars should be burped to avoid a dangerous explosion. I use large Gatorade bottles because they’re safe, strong, and you can see the lid swell and feel the hardness of the bottle when it’s expanded quite a bit, letting you know it either needs to be refrigerated or burped (open the cap slightly to release a little gas).

    You may want to burp your second ferment jars after a few days. I bought some 16 ounce grolsch bottles for the same reason and had them sitting on an open shelf in my dining room after I did the second ferment. On day three I was standing there talking with my mother in law and had one explode right in front of me! Scared the crap out of me and got the kombucha all over the place on books and other random things on the shelf.

I filled them to the shoulder of the bottle and checked for carbonation after 24 hours... nothing, 48 hours still no carbonation. Hopefully my kombucha isn’t ruined. The only additional comment I would make is douse everything that touches the brew or Scoby (utensils, crock, bottles, spoon, even your hands) with vinegar. This will prevent any contamination. The pellicle is basically pure cellulose, same as in any plant except it was excreted by bacteria. Lots of useful things you can do with it post-brew.
    The one thing the pellicle will NOT do is brew kombucha (more people need to make a point of highlighting that fact, as you did here). It’s 100% unnecessary for kombucha. As long as you have the kombucha itself (unfiltered, unpastueurised, unsterilised), that’s all you need for getting it going.

    A friend gave me a scoby in a Ziploc bag. What do I do with it when I get home and until I can make my tea???

    HEY awesome video, I followed every single step. After creating from scratch my own scoby which it took me about 3 weeks, I started making first fermentation of kombucha, around the 7th day I wanted to try a sip/taste to see if I like it enough to start my second fermentation and I found a little tiny bug stuck to the top of the new layer of scoby,I was shocked considering that I covered w cheese cloth and rubber band tightly. I wonder if it was okay to just remove a piece of the top layer of the scoby and continue with the fermentation for a few more days ? I checked the original scoby which was underneath the new layer of the scoby and it seems to be okay but I wonder if the little tiny flying bug had already ruined the whole jar of kombucha? ugghhh so UPSET after making my own scoby and then that happened.

      I'm not so uptight about things like that. Some people would toss the batch, but if it's just one little fruit fly I might just pick it out and keep going. It's up to you.

      I find that cheese cloth mesh is too wide, letting bugs in. So you either have triple or quadruple layer it, or better yet use a clean t-shirt, or pillowcase. I’ve used both with success. Then I bought some $1 neckerchiefs from Walmart.

      @daddykirbs  4 роки тому

      @@ekkcheng They have a stainless finish on them and that isn't ideal for the brew. I compensated by putting some freezer bag plastic on the mouth then putting the lids on... that helped I think but then there's the issue of the lids getting so tight they don't come off well.

    I think you said you put your kombucha in the pantry to ferment? Does that mean it’s generally in a closed dark space? I have a small pantry off my kitchen where I could put it, but then it would be in the dark behind a closed (though not sealed) door. Is that okay?

      From my experience, kombucha does best when brewed in a low light/no light, room temp or warmer, though not hot area. I have a pantry in my laundry room that works well in the summer, an a shelf in my dining room for the winter. Avoid at all costs, direct sunlight.

      You can find them outside in the nature! If very sweet fruits are have a hurt skin where the juice is coming out, a scopy is sometimes growing there if no rain is washing them away! But you don't need it really. If you take juice from fruits with sugar and let it stay under aerob conditions, it startet to fermantate, because yeasts and vinegar bacterias are everywhere. So the juice fermentate directly to Kombucha and later to vinegar! Kombucha is simply a thin mild vinegar, which turns to strong vinegar, if you let it fermentate for a very long time! Some insects like Drosophila melanogaster contaminate juices with Kombucha- or vinegar organism, which are mixture of yeasts and vinegar bacterias like Acetobacter xylinum and others!
