Windmills are a fun variant on two-beat weaves that you do around your head. They're great for level-changing among other things. He's the best technique I know for learning them--it also gives you some of the basic motor skills that go into a lot of other moves around the head.

How heavy are the poi? I'm making another homemade set for now but unsure about the weight
"and guess what, you're doing a windmill!" *smacks my glasses off my face with the poi*
ME
Yeah..sent mine flyin' with one and whacked the back of my head with the other.
You're teaching me everything that I'll ever know about poi!!!! Thanks for being so helpful Drex!!!
Fantastic videos! I purchased my first poi(podpoi off emazinglights) & got them Friday. I watched a couple of your videos and played around to EDM for a few hours. The 2nd time ever picking up poi, this Sunday, I was able to learn windmills just from your video. Flowing to music has become a budding passion of mine and my orbiter just wasnt cutting it. I got into a amazing flow last night for a couple hours. I'm hooked. Thanks for all your videos!
Still spinnin?
This is by FAR the best instruction of the windmill! Thank you soooo much for the breakdown.
I love touching base with all these old videos.
Your method is brilliant. Never understood why people explaind the windmill together with the corkscrew. Such a diffrent move but now i understand. Thank you!
This is my fave Drex vid because he’s just like “surprise! You’re now doing a windmill! Congrats”
I’ve hit myself so many times, however that being said your videos are so encouraging and helpful that I never want to stop practicing and improving!
Awesome video! I have puzzled over windmill for such a ridiculous time. I tried comparing it to weaves and corkskrew, but just made no sense, lol. This method is brilliant. Such a great progression into the move. Love it! Thanks!
hey i am just discovering these videos. great job with the tutorials.
I just got my first set of poi today... You make it look so simple!
haha and guess what your doing the windmill!! Brilliant.. thank you for sharing your skills your a brilliant teacher, can't wait to try this out later. I am choreographing a short poi performance for a scene in a show we have coming up in June, I'm just trying to figure out which moves will look good on stage, also learning how to dance with poi myself. I also have to teach two others how to spin from scratch, will be showing them your videos for sure. Thank you again, Charlotte.
I remember when I first got the hang of the windmill...I was so freaking stoked!!!
AAAAH DREX! this is GENIUS! here i thought i was going to be bonking myself in the head and getting my hair tangled in my poi sooooo much to learn this!
After this vid I think I’m really in love with ur method. It’s incredible how your explanation unblock my body😅😂❤ it’s a kind of magic🤩❤️
I can't wait to get out of work so I can try this. Makes more sense than using the corkscrew to start. Thanks for uploading. Keep them coming!
finally got this one! what helped me get this down was the corkscrew and standing right up. thanks drex!
Beautiful and timeless
WOW!! Super cool step by step instruction!!!
Totally right about mechanical difference between corkscrew and windmill - great tutorial as always.
Lorrena Elliott mechanical difference sure...
Biomechanical difference!?! Wtf?
I've been spinning for about 4 years now, and until now I could never get the Windmill down, thank you so much for the great tutorial.
Thanks for all the videos! Youre such a great teacher!
You are such a good teacher!! Thanks much!
Wow, awesome video! You just taught me how to do a windmill in an hour.
Outstanding! That might be a new record :)
awesome explanation and walk through of this particular move. thumbs up!
Got it finally! Thanks drex I skipped most of the parts just needed to see it!
I have been trying to get the windmill down through the corkscrew method for a while! Thank you so much for this. very helpful. :)
Awesome tutorial, really clever breakdowns of the moves.
I just found out that this move can also be done very similarly to a split time chase the sun.
May the flow be with you!
VERY INFORMATIVE! I love the way you ended the video. thank you! and thank you for getting straight to the point. Some tutorials tell a life story in the beginning.
oh. man. your expressions and the way you articulate is making me laugh while im learning. brava!!
I FOUND A HIDDEN GEM! 💎💜 so excited to start trying this I was finally able to nail the butterfly this morning 🥰 your videos are amazing and so helpful!
You sir
Are a genius!
I'm so excited I've taken poi up 😁
how do you spin the poi around your hands and spin them out ?
blew my mind!!! these tips really help me
I really like you videos! this is the next i want to do! Meditation on movement is the Poi! Respect from Portugal
i actually deduced the windmill from the movement you explained at the beginning... I full so silly now..
thanks for your videos they are so clear...
I love your toturials
i just got it finally. thanks drex.
Super clever way to teach it! Thank you!!!
wow nice! you were really helpful i finally learned these and ive been trying for years but the head turning explanation breakdown reaally helped ThanKs!
Still super relevant. Thank you for this. 💜
Thank again. Love your tutorials keep it going
brilliant teaching style brother... nice one.
You are a great teacher!
Holly fuck. You are a really talented teacher man!
Great Step-by-step tutorial
I'm noticing a trend here... I couldn't do reel turns until I watched the 2 beat weave, I couldn't do 2 until I watched 3 beat weave, now, I still can't do windmills, but I just learned 3 beat 😅
I had horrible problems with this move when I first was learning it. I would always lapse back into same time and it really frustrated me. I met another spinner at a show who told me to focus on my shoulders more than anything else and voila, just doing that completely solved the issue for me.
Just thought I'd share in case someone else might be able to use that.
10 years ago AMAZING
Great teacher:)
Very helpful drex thank you! It's also been found from personal experience not to wwear your glasses while spinning :P. My previous mentor took off on me so i'm having to result to youtube videos! :(
Dude, help me out (I hope you’ll see and respond to this): when I go into Windmill from Corkscrew I end up with cross point from my right hand on the left side (counter clockwise spinning, just like you in video), and its obvious that your cross point is on the right side. My hands are above my head and that kind of Windmill (maybe that’s not a Windmill at all!) is smooth.
That's exactly the problem I'm having; it keeps going into same time. What do you mean exactly by focus on your shoulders?
great tut, thank you, love it
But when I want to make cross point with right hand on the right side, then suddenly its all messy and I can’t get the rhythm (also I cant get hands above head, they are above shoulders).
But when I switch to opposites (Butterfly) then I can easily alternate front-to-back with cross points on appropriate side (but hands stays above shoulders).
What am I missing?
love the breakdown! thank you! :)
I literally can not figure this out. I can do the super sets all the way down to 1 beat per side but when I keep my body more neutral to create the windmill, everything kind of collapses. I even tried doing it in the mirror to see where I'm going wrong but I can't tell.
i haven't tried this, so i dont know :X ...! but what helps me sometimes is using two sticks (like rulers or yardsticks or... sticks out of your yard), and going in super slow motion. you can slow it down as much as you want, because you don't have to rely on the centrifugal/centripetal forces to keep the poi straight. once you can slow it down and see what you're doing, you can experiment without clocking yourself in the head and everything.
me too , ı can not :S
ı slowed but it is not.
where is my fault
an important figure, help please :)
i diddddd yesss :))
Yea except I feel like I’m doing it right but I can never truly tell
Amazing really ~ 😊
Perfect dude keep up the videos
I'm trying :(
awesome ! thanks for the tips
Could you do a video of how to turn while doing windmills? Someone showed me once and I've not gotten it again since!
you're just brilliant
Thank You! for a windmill tutorial. I want to do this so bad but always hit my head
-_-..more practice i guess
Anyone have tips on how to do the tic tac with my elbow up at the 90° angle...i just can't
Helpfull 💜 thanks and greets :)
Thank you!
Hi there Drex, I am a big fan of your videos and you are definitely a master of your craft. I know this is unconventional to ask but I have been searching the interwebs high and low for anything that can teach me how to do what this video is doing at 2:15/2:16, 4:02/4:03, and 1:47. I can so far, fountain, 3 beat/forwards/back, windmills, corkscrews, butterfly front and back, thread the needle front and back, buzzsaw, and can do 4 petal flowers with the help of your videos. I knew that if anyone would know what's going on, it would be you. I would greatly appreciate any feedback that you or any Drex fans have on what is going on.
Sasha the Fire Gypsy Performing at Webster Hall's Quarterly Arts Soiree
Again, maybe I am just being dense, but these are moves I have had my eye on for a while and would appreciate any help.
Omggggg so smooth you make it look sooooo easy . But in reality its hard ahhhhhhh lol
remember when you could click on a youtube video and at the bottom they offered related videos? idk y there is a bunch of leopard videos being suggested...
Does anyone else have trouble keeping the split time motion? I can keep one beat going with my head straight but they always seem to spin at the same time!! 😞😞
Earned a sub. + like thanks for sharing!
I'm dyslexic and cannot follow him unless he faces the other way. I'm having so much trouble
Shoot, I thought I had it, but the timing is a half step off.... will try again tomorrow! Still it looks nice, whatever it is I am actually doing.
Got it. Still look awkward as all get out, but at least I'm only hitting myself in the head intermittently, and the timing is close to right.
Badass 🤙🏾
thank you!!
Nice.
Or how to btb weave
wow!!!! 11years ago.
I want to make poi dancing as my hobby...I really want to learn.but where can I buy poi here in Doha?
+phonex calypso I'm not sure where Doha is but I got mine from Home of Poi. You can also get them from the drexfactor website. Drex uses contact poi, but there are lots of different kinds.
+phonex calypso i didn't buy my poi; really any weight on the ends of strings will work (mine are glowsticks tied to the ends of shoelaces.)
if you're clumsy and likely to end up hitting yourself in the head a few times, I'd recommend looking up some tutorials online for making poi out of socks.
Cool
Hyperloop / orbital tut !
Why don't we do a mathematical formula to figure out exactly what degree we should turn our head to figure out how to do a windmill guys. lolol
For the love of god, I cannot get this down lol. Not giving up.
I've been struggling with this one. They look really sloppy and I can't keep my planes legit.
still struggling. Might try the shoulder trick
Wenaaa choroooo!!!
this is so hard , ı can not windmills :( :\
I didn't know Jesse Eisenberg did poi
He's hungry and he's found us! Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding...
you look just like him! you could totally play lex luthor😜
Ha! I've been told I look like Beck before but never Jesse Eisenberg. I'll have to file that one away. There's an old Fox drama that he was in called Get Real in the late 90s that I absolutely adored. To me he'll always be that kid ;)
I buy this ball, but I am in an Arab country
