Hainbach - Forgive (The Coventry Litany of Reconcilliation)

- n which I put my impressions of a recent visit to Coventry, a city that was leveled in WWII by the German Luftwaffe, to music. I am not a religious person, but the Litany of Reconciliation (written by Canon Joseph Poole in 1958), of which I recorded a recital at the Coventry Cathedral, deeply moved me. Together with a walk through the wounds of war, the ruins of the old cathedral, the massive brutalist buildings and the incredible architecture of the new Cathedral it told me a story that runs deep through humanity. A truly humbling experience and one that reminded me of the power of forgiving.

Litany of Reconciliation
All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class,
FATHER FORGIVE
The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own,
FATHER FORGIVE
The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth,
FATHER FORGIVE
Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others,
FATHER FORGIVE
Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee,
FATHER FORGIVE
The lust which dishonours the bodies of men, women and children,
FATHER FORGIVE
The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God,
FATHER FORGIVE
Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
As someone born and brought up in Coventry I found this combination of images, words and music very moving.
On a personal note I would also like to extend a hand of common solidarity to the citizens of Dresden, Lübeck, and the other cities similarly flattened by Allied forces during WWII.
"An army of principles can penetrate where an army of soldiers cannot." -- Thomas Paine.
Well said :)
This is moving and very apt for our times. My mom was born in 1933 in Wolverhampton, not far from Coventry and is now 86. I can remember her telling me as a child about her family hiding under the stairs during bombing raid blackouts. She has instilled in me the need to differentiate between normal, sane people like ourselves, who have respect for and no hatred of each other, and the power hungry who use their friends in the media to spew propaganda and lies, to create fear which should not exist between us. We all need to guard ourselves against such manipulation, to know each other better so that we can resist those lies as one populace. Pieces like this help to strengthen that peace and trust between us and show each other as the same, to push back against the minority hate groups and their representatives, take away their false arguments.
Thank you for creating this, its sensitivity, civility and clarity is its strength. Beautifully done :-)
The words give it weight and the music gives it room.
Great atmosphere as always.
To ask for forgiveness after being bombed; it takes true strength and humility...
You’ve elevated the already-sacred, Hainbach. Beautiful...
I'm not even christian but this was very moving, great work!
Same here! It's the pure notion of forgiveness in the face of horror that is so impressive.
I'm an agnostic/atheist, but I find a lot of religious art moving, including this piece -- both the litany itself and the music.
Spot on. The more the powers that be preach hate, the more we'll learn to love each other. Thank you for the amazing music. Art makes a better world everyday.
I don’t believe in god or sin, but humans can forgive. Thank you for this beautiful and moving composition.
Well done. Very moving. Forgiveness is in my experience the key to inner peace. Thank you for This beautiful piece my friend.
Thank you buddy! Forgiveness helps indeed, it's surprises me how freeing it can be.
I did my master at Coventry University. This brings back memories. The city is not much to look at, thanks to the sins of my forefathers, but it's the people that counts. I only spend the better part of a year there but it was time well spent.
The words, the music and the pictures deeply moved me. Thank you Hainbach for creating this beautiful performance.
An important and universal message for all people. Thanks for sharing and caring, Hainbach.
Forgiving is probably the single most powerful message of Christ. And it's needed more than ever, I'm afraid.
I might very well show this to my Confirmation students.
Thanks for coming to Coventry. Glad you enjoyed your visit.
Mighty good work, for a “not religious person”. Thanks, Hainbach.
In English schools we are taught about Coventry but we also need to be taught about Cologne
Such moving music. We need redemption now more than ever. Thank you.
I was wondering, when I saw the Instagram post of the sixties modern architecture in Coventry, if you’d made the connection with the Luftwaffe raids. This was quite moving as music and imagery. I personally Could have done with it being a lot longer, but hey, if it’s less than twenty minutes I don’t think music really can get going! 😂🤣
Thanks Hainbach a lovely piece, and quite prescient for our times here in the UK. 👏🏽👍👍👍✌️😁👊
I didn't know this litany existed. Thank you for giving this to the world.
the restraint of this is so good it hurts
Goose bumps all the way through! You are a true ambient mastermind
I know Coventry well. My Grandmother lived through the blitz in Coventry
Nice. Almost a Constance Demby style. You should do another for Dresden.
Thank you. This brought me to tears. The beauty of the message and artwork is deepened by the careful beauty of your process. You are an inspiration.
Beautiful piece... the music is wonderful ,, love your video work . The piece with empty amusement park was magical too.. holding anger only damages yourself
Beautiful work, Hainbach. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful sounds Mr. Hainbach.
Wasn't expecting this in my feed today but I absolutely love it. That window piece at Coventry is so special

I love the combination of noise and melody in this work.
i imagine noise is brutal reality of our world and melody is our dreams but
Maybe we mus be happy with reality of life and noise.
Lovely, potent, a cause to reflect. A brave piece, and an interesting history lesson. Thank you
I listened to it at least 12 times until now beginning one month ago

Once again, thank you for making this beautiful piece Hainbach
Just beautiful.
a most beuatiful piece
Edgar Froese would approve. ;) But, seriously, that was wonderful... and I never knew about this litany... and I should have.
Moving piece , beautifully felt x
Exceptional piece and marriage of content, music, words
Absolutely beautiful work.
I keep wanting to try and explain why I find this profound, but I can't do so in a way that satisfies.
Regardless, well done. This is a truly beautiful piece of music.
It is fitting that you released this during the Advent Season. It is the season that we celebrate the birth of Christ who was the personification of forgiveness. That is the whole reason He came to earth, to be the propitiation of our sins, reconciling us to God. Your composition started with "For all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God.", Romans 3:23 It is fitting for us to forgive on another as Christ forgave us. As a matter of fact, scripture teaches us that we must forgive or God will not forgive us. Beautiful composition Hainbach..
Moving. It feels raw, seems hopeful.
A great deal of wrong was done on all sides during that dark period in our shared history, Dresden's firebombing ordered by UK bomber command (Butcher Harris) was a reprehensible act. It's a moving piece H all the same, powerful words set to an appropriately sombre soundscape.
Superb work. Thank you👍
Your best work yet. Love your stuff, and keep it up. God Bless
Beautiful.
Forgiveness is always needed especially in these hard times. Your work here is very wonderful. You added an extra n in the title after all that 😀, but I forgive you!
Stunning piece, Hainbach!
Beautiful Work!
Powerful.
Woaouw!

Very moving. Beautiful work as always
A really lovely track, and the "poem" was a really fitting for the track.
FATHER FORGIVE.
Stefan, that is more than “great” or “beautiful !
Just awesomely beautiful ! thank you to be such an inspiration. Have you plan to come in Paris in the future ?
Brimming lush sounds, as if Angels aerying down on us to lift a bygone veil.
Very strong
wow thats so intense
Dear Hainbach, Please try to do the same between East and West Germany. My grandma was a German American and I know this split hurt her, and you have healed before, so please try again. Pat
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for making this and sharing this with us. May I ask, what source material have you used for the sound design? Besides a piano, and spoken word...what sound sources/synthesis?
The only other sound source is the Juno60, two layers of it. The rest is tape manipulation.
Very moving. Text and music add up to much more... Whose voice is it?
The Reverend at the Coventry Cathedral, I recorded him directly in the space.
@@Hainbach Great Voice!

It is the way how the Germans treated all polish cities between 39-45 bombs and fire to the ground... 😢
Interesting. This could be an opening to some Techno
