    Albrecht Mayer--fantastic oboist with a fantastic sense of humour. I really enjoyed watching these masterclass videos!

    Her name is as mentioned Mary Lynch and as of August 2012 she has been playing with the Cleveland Orchestra. (These masterclasses took place in February 2012 I believe)

    He is a fantastic teacher, and definitely gets the most out of his student. But music is such a spiritual thing, and when they each pour their spirits out through the oboe, there is no question in my mind that the student has the purer spirit, and thus creates the greater beauty. Of course it could also be that the teacher is focusing only on technique and humor, and that he could make me cry with his playing, too, if this were the time and place for it.

    I hope she took his critique with great enthusiasm. She is so lucky to be there. I do think body type has much to do with producing the robust intonation he was demonstrating. Ich leibe es.

      A lot of it has to do with the American vs Germanic style of oboe Reed too. German double reeds typically play a heavier Reed, producing a darker sound and using wider more present vibrato. Americans usually play on lighter reeds with a more shimmery vibrato and higher overtones in the sound

      🙄. She won a job with the Cleveland Orchestra a week later and then Principal of Seattle a year later. She was not lucky to be there but rather a rising star in the US

      He never played under Karajan. Lothar Koch and Hans-Jörg Schellenberger were famous solo oboists under Karajan!

    I like her tone and expression much better than his. It may be a matter of taste.

      Mayer does has a pretty bright tone which allows him to project in a big concert hall. Mary's tone is a lot darker. But Mayer seems to be not even trying 😅

      Most people don't hold the instrument directly facing forwards/up/the "normal" way. I think that at her (and Albrecht's) level, whatever works best is the best approach, and a standard, one-size-fits-all form of technique is not right.

    Mayer is far from perfect. His tone always arrives with a slight delay. I wonder if anyone dares to tell him that.

      +ChrisMusikar her whole posture is too constricted which is what I find with alot of American oboists..

      ChrisMusikar She's principal of Seattle now so I guess she figured it out!

    Interesting!
    She doesn't really "get" it physically/ musically and emotionally yet.
    I teach clarinet to middle and high school students. Getting them to become physically and mentally comfortable with the vulnerability of exposing their emotions is the biggest hurdle. Obviously, the understanding of proper diaphragm support and placement etc is also critical.
    It's kind of scary for them to share real "feeling" in front of others.

      @@Irishrose777 Please note that this video is from 2013. She went on to win a job with the Cleveland orchestra and is now principal in Seattle. Search a couple more recent videos. She's and absolutely brilliant, expressive oboe player and musician.

      @mrbroadwaydork Рік тому +1

      She definitely "gets it" winning a job with Cleveland as her first job literally a month after this and then principal with Seattle Symphony a year later. Seems you need to readjust what "getting" it means
