  • Watch the 1989 Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-9 Record) defeat the prohibitive favorite Edmonton Eskimos (16-2) on their own hometown Commonwealth Stadium turf. The 1989 Eskimos still hold the enduring CFL regular season win record (!) But the overconfident bunch were no match for the Cardiac Kid Riders who pulled off quite possibly the biggest upset in CFL history... but the Riders knew all along they were going to be a bigger challenge than the Eskimos ever gave them credit for.... Whoops!
The play that turned this game all around was "The Hit" - a blindside hit by Eddie Lowe on stunned Eskimo quarterback Tracy Ham... when the ball popped loose, Dave Albright was in perfect position to scoop it up and once future CFL commissionaire Randy Ambrose made a whoosh of an attempt to tackle him, there was nothing between Albright and paydirt... Suddenly instead of 10-3 Eskimos it was 10-All, with all the momentum swinging to the Rider side. Watch this play all unfold at the 32:58 mark!
Some interesting points during the video:
(Note: Most commercials have been removed from the game)
7:00 Eskimos Taylor scores on 4 yard run on opening drive of the game (7-0 Edm)
8:00 Roughrider coach John Gregory (along with some Rider players) appear in a neat Mr. Lube commercial.
17:35 Eskimos Jerry Kauric FG (10-0 for Edm)
21:50 Dave Ridgway, 44 yd Field Goal (10-3 for Edm)
32:58 "The Hit" by Eddie Lowe and Touchdown for Dave Albright (10-10 tie)
40:49 Ray Elgaard TD on 5 yard pass from Kent Austin (17-10 for Sask)
1:01:01 Kent Austin gets injured and has to leave game - late in 2nd quarter.
    1:19:40 Start of 2nd Half
1:20:15 It doesn't count (holding penalty) but here is a neat 70 yard "touchdown pass" that would have started the 2nd half with a bang, to James Ellingson from Tom Burgess
1:37:47 Jeff Fairholm, 46 yard touchdown pass from Tom Burgess (24-20 for Sask)
1:41:47 Ray Elgaard, 14 yard touchdown pass from Tom Burgess (31-20 for Sask)
2:25:20 The End of the Game and Rider Celebration on Field!
2:26:26 Interview with Game MVP Tom Burgess
2:28:07 We get to see a couple minutes of the celebratory Rider crowd outside of their dressing room
2:30:38 TSN Sportsdesk - includes both West and East Final highlights as well as short locker room interviews with some of the players.

The Albright scoop & score changed everything. Edmonton was up 10-3, driving for more, Ham is then heavily blitzed and sacked on back to back plays…the second of which forced a fumble and a defensive TD. Huge momentum changer. They really sent the heat after Ham all game long. The Riders never looked back.

The Eskimos faced so little adversity or opposition that year that they didn't know how to respond to a team that came back against them. Despite their record, the Eskimos had some weaknesses (e.g., kicker/punter, wide receiver), and the Roughriders did a good job of exploiting them.

The 16-2 Eskimos were pretty much an unstoppable force that year, a team so dominant they broke all kinds of records and had an absurd point differential, +342 pts! They scored 644 averaging more than 35 pts per game. I don’t think anyone other than the Rider players thought they had a shot against the mighty Eskimos. But when it’s one game and you’re a hot team, anything can happen. One magical postseason for Saskatchewan!

Yup, James Curry thought it was a fait accompli as well. He did offer to play in the Grey Cup, though, after the upset.

The Riders peaked too soon the year before and choked at home against a very ordinary BC team. They made up for it in 1989 doing the same to a vastly superior Edmonton team.

Thanks for posting! I remember this game very well! I was curling in Lafleche and watching the game in between. I remember how Mandarich was talking big and saying it wouldn't even be close. Then he ate crow!

One of the biggest upsets in CFL history. It is crazy to think that if the Edmonton team hung on, "The Kick" wouldn't have happened.

Very sad to hear that Dave Albright, the Touchdown scorer in one of the all-time greatest plays in Rider history, passed away this week at just 63 years old. My deepest sympathies to his friends and family. To see the great play, and the scoop and score after "The Hit" by Eddie Lowe, go to the 32:58 mark of this video.

It also helps when you are playing your opponents on at least 3 occasions during the season, but for a 9-9 team to soundly defeat the 16-2 Eskies was quite the feat.

Not only were the Esks 16-2, they were 9-0 at home!
Where would the CFN feed have aired? CBC was showing all the playoff games at the time, were they not? I remember a collection of home videos recapping the 87, 88, and 89 seasons that used the CFN feed for highlights and it was the first time I'd heard of it.

CFN was the league's in house production arm. In the 70s and 80s the league split coverage between CBC and CTV. CTV dropped CFL coverage in the mid 80s, which meant there were a significant number of games that would not have been televised at all. The league created it's own operation to cover and market these games (theoretically both within Canada and as an export). CFN was available to both independent and regional network TV stations.

Not as big of an upset as one might think. The Riders had already beaten Edmonton once that season. Edmonton was so arrogant with their little nickname towels.

Bullshit!! 16-2, the best regular season record at the time, this was the biggest upset in CFL history in my opinion so stop talking out of your ass, you obviously don’t know shit about football
