Tony will never do this, he's explained again and again that part of how he does so much is by sticking to one brand. UTG would spend more money and time on that 5.0 as he would on the entirety of a lot of his cars. Plus, yes, he was a legend in the 5.0 days, but that was over 30 years ago and since then the performance landscape for the 5.0 has changed. But, if he ever wants to step out of his mopar sanctuary... i'd love to see what UTG would do with a SBF.

Seeing that Swinger in front of the old shop brought a tear to my eye. In that old shop, you taught me how to seat valves, gasket match, rebuild a head, and a slew of other things. But most of all, watching those poorly acted, poorly edited, humorous, and carb abusing clips gave me (a guy who had never worked on anything bigger than a lawn mower) the inspiration and confidence to turn an old, beat up, farm pick up into a solid daily driver that still turns a few heads. Thank you, Tony.

I got SO EXCITED when I saw this car. Back in 1976 when I was 16 years old a 1970 340 Dart Swinger was my very first car. It only had 42,000 original miles on it and it was a screamer. It only had the 3.23 gears in the rear end but it was a Sure Grip 8 3/4". 340 motors just LOVE to rev I treated most every stop sign like the start of a quarter mile. Tough, tough motor. I beat a lot of small block Camaros and Mustangs back in the day. I had so much fun in that car. I watched this episode so I was at first disappointed by the drivetrain. But I got over it and just enjoyed looking at your car. Actually I would love to have one like this today. At 62 I have a little more maturity than I had at 16, But if I had one of those again with a 340, I might just get in trouble again. A tame small block would still be a lot more fun to drive around than the cookie cutter cars I drive now. Thanks for showing this one Uncle Tony.

I'm 38 now and still have my first daily driver. I have my 68 Dart 270 since I was 19. The little 2bbl 318 has some pep to it for what it is. I still have the car, but it needs some love. After watching Tony's video, I have more motivation to get it done by the end of this summer. A buddy of mine wants to help me get running alongside his Mk 3 Supra. Hopefully you can find another Swinger, I know that there are several places out west that rust free ones, though the interiors are a bit shot from the dry desert heat, but it makes for a great starting point.

@@ninjajunpei1984 My first car was a '70 base model Challenger 318/2barrel, column shifted automatic, single exhaust. I was 16 when I got it in 1975. It had just over 50,000 miles when I got it. I had put about 30,000 more miles on it when all the teeth sheared off the PLASTIC cam sprocket and destroyed the engine. If only I had known it had that PLASTIC cam sprocket I could have replaced it with a steel sprocket and saved the engine. I sold the car with the blown engine and bought a '72 Nova 350, and pretty much became a Chevy guy. Only later did I wish I had used the money to replace the engine in the Challenger. But I needed a car in a hurry. Oh well. It wasn't the last car mistake I made. I've had so many $5000 cars that are now selling for $25,000.

Not gonna lie I was pretty disappointed with where we left off with this car. Uncle Tony told us it was gonna be a torque monster that could turn the tires over naturally and do 14s on a budget while getting good mileage. He even told me/us in one live stream that it was gonna have enough torque to pull a house down. At least I ended up getting the low end torque results I thought we were gonna get with this car on my friends 76 D100 when I put the same SP2P and a Qjet on the trucks 318.
Honestly I was expecting a lot more from the 360 in this little car though, especially since Tony and I both thought that the 318 heads were gonna jive perfectly with the SP2P. The way its sitting now my stock 305 Trans Am would probably eat this thing.

Well it was supposed to knock down mid 20s mpg too. But as a former 360 owner I kind of never thought it was ever going to be able to do that under standard daily driving conditions. Plans don’t always go like we hope. Lol I have been playing with turbos on my truck trying to find a combo to get me 1mpg better and still haven’t got it nailed only way I can do it is drive slower. lol I will get a parts combo someday to do it though I am sure!!!

Especially if I stayed off the highway. Later I swapped to a Magnum 360 and kept the same carb and fuel pump from the 273. For a couple weeks I drove the 360/3.55 combo with the exact same tune and fuel system as the 273 and it got almost the same mileage as the 273/3.55 combo. I would like to test it now because I feel like its still getting high teens at 40-45 MPH.

Good gas mileage. The 360 magnum in my Jeep can only hope to get maybe 18 if im light on the throttle at 55mph.. and thats with an automatic 4 speed with lockup. But averages about 16.. yes im heavier and a brick but still.. any faster than 55 which most interstates are ill average about 16
I bet my stock 360 has more torque than this thing does as well.
It sucks you neglected the paint job. I did that to my wagoneer.. and black mold got on it and even with deep poliahing it never fully came off.. mold sucks.
If it really is getting mid 15s then its no faster than my Jeep and weighs probly 1000 lbs less

My 65 GTO was built as a daily driver too, except it has a 455 with lots of compression running on vodka, and two stage pearl paint. I want to put a 4 speed back in it, thats what it had when it was new... and the 455 keeps breaking overdrive transmissions. I have a Tremec 5 speed for it, but that might end up in the 69 or the 70 GTO. Might do a LeMans as a daily with spare parts I have around here, might do the 72 Ventura as a very low buck fun toy with a ring/bearing/oil pump 400 and 2004R... for science. I suppose I could daily driver the 32 Pontiac two door sedan too, be a bit more work than the others, but man it would be cool doing grocery runs in that thing.
The 68 LeMans (going to the NNN) and my 79 Formula are the only cars that aren't really intended for daily driver duties around here... they are street/strip with mostly strip intentions. Something about low buck extra parts built cars speaks to me.. probably because that is what I have been driving my entire life. The newest car I ever bought was a 1998 Formula in 2004 with 84k on it. Everything else has been at least ten years old when I got them.

The bubbling on the C pillars is something I look for when buying an old car. The bubbling is from the original lead they used to attach the quarters at the factory. If you see this, it means the car has original quarters on it. That doesn't mean there isn't a gallon of filler in them, it just means they have never been replaced.

Been a fan of the channel since it started. Honestly I completely forgot about this car. Im on project Parts Runner right now. I saved a 83 El Camino last November from the crusher. It is a factory Buick V6 car with an automatic. Been reading and going off of a lot of 80s articles to build that Y6 and I think I got a winner. I put the engine together with the 83 Block and crank with a set of NOS Eagle Rods from the 90s, and Forged Pistons(8.8 to 1 compression) if I did the math right. I then used a set of late 70s 231 reman cylinder heads from Oreilys of all places 😂🤣. because they flowed better than the 80s ones. Topped it off with the 83 Intake all gasket matched with a 280 CFM Holley. Ignition is a GM HEI unit for Marine use. I will experiment with that and the original OEM unit that came with the car. I left the factory Exhaust manifolds on it and just matched them to the gaskets. Im into this engine just under 1k. With the 260 gear and the little 14s on it it should do well as a daily, parts runner, or Jefferson swap meet runner.

I built anything and everything out of them, as well as working on other peoples cars for extra money to put my wife (of 35 years now) through college. These days, I have a nice big shop on property that we own but, my wife and I still drive past that place every few weeks just to reminisce about the good old days and, all the good times we had there. We're also still good friends with the owner who's in his 80s now and, always stop by to talk when his truck is parked in the lot. Lately, he's been trying to talk us into buying the building. But, the plan is this year is to take it to a friend's place and us tear into it and get it back on the road. And after seeing this video, I have a lot more motivation to get it done by at least the end of summer.

Wow, a 7 1/4 SG, if it’s the older Dana Powerlok with 4 pinions it makes the axle much stronger than an open diff. I guess there was a later SG that’s a 2 pinion type, not so strong. Those industrial parks can be great, as I’ve experienced, lots of help nearby if you need it.

Uncle Tony I always wanted to see a stock 318 magnum in a fox body. I know they make more hp and Tq then the 302 so it would be cool to see what could have been in Chrysler would have built a v8 muscle car in the 90s.

Tony: Project Daily Driver making the best of otherwise plain jane daily driver to deliver dependable and reliable performance that is enjoyable while conducting business. Like you said the correct combination of elements wins the budget race. The potential for a channel dedicated to Business Mens' Coups, Family Sedans and Mommy Mobiles has a lot of potential given the price of new cars and their lack of potential for gratifying modifications.

try to find an edelbrock LD-340 manifold 1/3rd the weight and better perfomance all around as it is a dual plane high rise as was the original 340 intake.

I remember when you were working on that car...paint was from Restoration Shop if I remember correctly (same paint I used to paint my Beetle) and I remember you talking about how that manifold was only good for fuel economy. Was wondering not too long ago how it was doing...I keep thinking it would be cool to try and build a DD like that but it'll probably never happen 😭

I've found with bike tuning that compromising volumetric efficiency for whatever reason never really works unless you're trying to stifle it. They want what they want when they want it

I always liked the 318 better than the 360 I've had a mess of both the 18 is perky and the tuna can carb gets decent mileage the 60 was always a little lazy and the bigger carb just sucked gas it didn't matter if it was a van or a car the 318 will always be a favorite of mine

You did have to park right in the middle of a mud puddle. I'm assuming it does not have carpet? Does that thing actually have A/C in it? The first time I saw that car I really liked it. Always liked that body style. But my first thought was, that would never work as a daily driver in Phoenix, AZ where it can hit 120 degrees quite often during the long hot summer. I didn't realize it had A/C in it. I'm mostly a Chevy guy, but I have a 1972 Ford Pinto woodgrain wagon that I put a 289/4 speed in out of a 1967 Ford Falcon. I had it repainted by Maaco, and had the woodgrain vinyl replaced by a sign shop that does full body wraps for commercial vehicles (I'm just not a body and paint guy) It turned out nice, and it's a blast to drive. It has a real dual exhaust with glasspacks, and even with a stock cam it sounds great. I love the 4 speed. It gets a lot of looks and compliments. But. It has no A/C. Or heat either for that matter. But here we don't need heat. But because it has no A/C, it is basically undriveable for almost half the year. I've been thinking about rigging up an A/C system in it. There is plenty of room under the dash for an evaporator/fan unit, I should be able to fit a condenser in it, I just need to figure out a way to mount and drive a compressor. The Falcon the engine came out of did not have A/C, or power steering. It has one belt, crank/water pump/alternator. One of the few times I've used an engine out of another car without rebuilding it. Over 6 years and it still runs fine.
