    I hate customer service advisors. Especially the ones with no mechanical experience. Absolutely AC is tricky, especially the ones with no freon in it. That's why many places don't just repair them. They sell and replace all of it. That's why you get $1500+ quote. Far as customers go, they don't understand things are not so simple.

      It's not simple at all my guy. What's crazy is that could be another leak somewhere. That's all I see right now but usually leaks go to the weakest point. Imagine we replace the condenser then find out the evap was leaking as well 4 days later. No cust would understand that.

    Since you couldn't find any visible oil on your diagnostic. I think it would have been the best to pull it in a vacuum and just let it sit. You would have seen the vacuum drop and then you could explain to the customers that there is a leak, but we need to put some elite detector in there to find it.

    I work at AutoZone. Anytime a customer comes in with an AC complaint and the pressure reads a straight zero, the first step is to blip the trigger on the charging hose to make sure it's not a broken gauge. I broke quite few over the last two years.
    If the pressure really is zero, I grab a can of freon that was returned as a core but has a few ounces left over for pressure test.
    Prime the lines with the engine off and listen for any hissing noises well away from the low side valve. Roughly half the time this test fails and we direct the customer to address the damage first. Most of the time, it happens on the high side around the condenser.
    Seen a few boneheads leak all their freon out in three days too, when they drop the valve cap or just forget to put it back on.

    Had to have the condenser replaced on my 13 200 a couple years ago. Leaking in same place as you show. Similar mileage. 60k. Car only has 63k now.

    After you explain it, ask.. "You understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?" 😂😂😂

    Personally I think the manufacturers should have the dye in the oil when they build them. That way it makes it easier to spot the leak the first time the customer is in. And make us mechanics life easier to satisfy the customer the first time around

      They do have dye from the factory. The issue is that the oil and dye gets washed off during the winter months. So, when the customer comes in in the spring (like they usually do) complaining that their A/C isn't working, we can't see any leaks.

      Good idea .but when have the car manufacturers ever been concerned about the technician

    Not trying to
    Be the guy JT but with a UV flashlight and a test drive you would’ve seen the leak same day. Possibly would’ve caught it with a sniffer too.

    • @OnlineMechanicTips
      @OnlineMechanicTips  Місяць тому

      Perhaps. If you lucky I guess. The crazy thing with this is those are the areas I visibly checked before even adding the dye. Normally a leak would leave a oily substance on the affected area but no. That condenser was dry looking. After dye and 3 days later, green residue all over condenser now. So it's hard to say if all that could have been accomplished in a hours time on the same day. But interesting point

      @@OnlineMechanicTips It wouldn’t have been obvious. It’s April. If it leaked out in three days after your service then it dried up or washed away way before it got to you. You would’ve seen it just wet, let alone with a uv light or sniffer.

    A simple pressure test and soapy water would have found it in 15mins. Charging a system with a known leak 🤭. Just playing with customers time and money.

    • @OnlineMechanicTips
      @OnlineMechanicTips  Місяць тому

      Yea if it was only that simple dude. What makes you think it was a known leak? Didnt you hear me say I looked around and saw no signs of any leak?, At that point, one could assume it just left a body shop and simply was not recharged after repairs made. Seems everybody different. This the way I chose to do it on this car. But the way you speak of sound interesting tho.

    So here is what you do. Since it's only one ounce of refrigerant you make the repairs don't charge a service charge 2xs because you know it needs another service and you recharge it 1 oz refrigerant on the arm. You still get paid parts and labor and can make up clock hours on another job and everyone is happy. This is why people hate dealership you don't communicate properly. As a customer you can't ask for money not fix the problem and then charge again at 120 bucks an hour for diagnosis. You need to give a little.
