That was an exceptionally good use of the power. If it's by touch he's likely copying DNA and as such inherits any genetic issues from the person as well. Clever bit of writing to create actual sympathy between characters.
You really have to feel for Simon considering he was only a child when Thomas died, even had he'd explained what happened it's likely wouldn't of believed him. It's a moving story i liked it

He most likely do not just copy their looks, since he also gained the girl's disease when he shapeshifted into her and gained better running skills during the two boy's competition. You know since he regenerated the shotgun wound when he turned back couldn't he turn into someone else, have him and the girl switch hearts, and then after waking up with the weak heart he reverts back to to his original body with the original heart? That regeneration seems to be broken, he can supply unlimited fresh organs as long as he can wake up afterwards and revert back.

There is a good chance that if you either overdosed or took a potent enough drug to kill yourself that quickly, that the drug was also cardiotoxic. As is, he was lucky that his heart was still healthy and viable after killing himself in a way that could have caused heart failure, thereby eliminating him from the donor pool.
