What happens to the nectar on hot days that it needs to be changed every other day?

Among other things, the sugar solution can grow fungus that can infect the hummingbirds tongues swell. Then they cant eat and starve to death.

My hummingbirds have ALWAYS been SO FRIENDLY AND CURIOUS from day one when i moved in! They fly right up to my face and dont act afraid at all. They dont even care about my cats. Not intimidated by them at all lol. I was holding my cat on the patio and the hummingbird came right up within 2 feet of my cat and myself and my cat seemed to have a relationship w the birds somehow, and just watched and didnt make any movements or signs of wanting to get the bird. Its so strange but they see each other all day through the patio windows so i think they have some crazy mutual respect lol. My cat does not act the same way with other birds. She will absolutely want to get any dove or pigeon that flys around. Its so crazy! I love having them around! The one even responds to the name i gave it- dot dot- bc of the polka dots on the chest- and has heard me associate that name everytime i see it. Id love to know the species! I think its rufus but im not even close to sure.

Rufus has a rusty color plumage. Also, they have very good hearing. If they get close to your face, it usually means their feeders need changing or a refill.

Good video. I would like to add some information also. At least 50% of all Hummingbirds die their first year. If a Hummingbird can make it through it's first year, it has a good chance of surviving 5 or more years. Many first season Hummingbirds don't leave the North when they should. So they end up starving to death or freezing to death. Feeders should be removed in the middle of September. It's instinctual for Hummingbirds to migrate. But being days late, can make a huge difference in their survival rate. Next, Candidiasis, a fungal tongue infection and Avian poxvirus, a tumor growth on a hummingbird's beak are the two most common diseases spread among hummingbird feeders. These diseases are mostly due to dirty feeders, bad sugar water and toxic commercial nectar. I would guess most commercial nectar is made well. But somehow maybe they spoil. (I've read this, not something I can verify). Next, be sure to have a hummingbird feeder up before Spring arrival. They will really need that energy source. And there may not be enough Nectar or insects for them all to feed on at first. And YES, Hummingbirds can consume many small soft bodied insects each day. Especially with young in the nest. Be careful spraying insecticide around too. Imagine all the aphids, small spiders etc. that are not dead, at least not right after you spray. And a hummingbird comes by and snatches it for a meal or to feed her babies. I live in North Central Arizona. We are a high desert, yet we can have numerous snows per year. Our nights can be 10 Degrees during a cold Winter. And yet..... we have a small population of hummingbirds that stick around throughout Winter. The Anna's hummingbird is here right through the snow. I have photos of them feeding from my feeders, with 6 inches of snow on the ground. For people that have the Anna's hummingbird and live in areas like myself. It's best to remove your feeder in September like always. Most Anna hummingbirds will leave the area and migrate, but not all. I usually have a few flowers hit and miss into November. Mid November I will place my feeders back outside. They will freeze at night and often defrost during the day. Or I warm them up and replace them myself. Remember, Hummingbirds are only in the Americas. Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East will never see a Hummingbird. So it's up to us to take care of these wonderful little creatures.

And, hummingbirds are also in the Caribbean. The smallest hummingbird is called the Bee hummingbird, and is found only in Cuba. You can put out fresh cut orange halves, and hummingbird will sip from the oranges. I discovered this by accident. They love oranges.

I live in Washington State, my Hummers come in around mid March. I had 3, but haven't seen any in about two weeks. Can you tell me why?
    Thanks

Mary Ann, I don't know other than there is usually slower traffic at the feeders for hummers early and it builds to much more traffic late in the season.

I live in the same state as you. It all depends on if it's a year with an early Spring, or not. They know when flowers begin to bloom. No sense in them flying all that way if no flowers are in bloom. Anna's hummingbird usually stays year round in Western Washington. I'm not sure if it's the same in your town. Oh! And I suspect, if they have a nest, they may not be visiting your feeder because they are too busy feeding their babies.

Geesh.... I would just be patient and keep maintaining the feeder. It’s still early in the season. Best of luck.

If you make your own sugar water, make it sweeter. Just add a tbsp or 2 more to your water and add 3 drops of Pure Orange flavor to your boiling water. The hummingbirds love it. Wash the whole feeder (even perch area) with blue Dawn dish detergent each week when you refill the feeder. Always provided a water fountain for them to bathe and plants tubular flowers for them to stick around your yard.
