- "Nevada City (originally, Ustumah, a Nisenan village; later, Nevada, Deer Creek Dry Diggins, and Caldwell's Upper Store) is the county seat of Nevada County, California, United States, 60 miles (97 km) northeast of Sacramento, 84 miles (135 km) southwest of Reno and 147 miles (237 km) northeast of San Francisco. The population was 3,068 as of the 2010 Census." - Wikipedia.org
"European-Americans first settled Nevada City in 1849, during the California Gold Rush, as Nevada (Spanish for "snow-covered", a reference to the snow-topped mountains in the area). The Gold Tunnel on the north side of Deer Creek was the city's first mine, built in 1850. The first sawmill in Nevada City was built on Deer Creek, just above town, in August 1850, by Lewis & Son, with a water wheel."
"In 1850-51, Nevada City was the state's most important mining town, and Nevada County the state's leading gold-mining county. In 1851, The Nevada Journal became the first newspaper published in the town and county. The first cemetery in town, the Pioneer Cemetery, was founded around 1851 behind the Nevada City United Methodist Church, Nevada County's first denominational church."
"The town of Nevada was incorporated on April 19, 1856. In 1864, the word “City” was added to its name to relieve confusion with the nearby state of Nevada, and the town has legally been known as Nevada City ever since. The former town of Coyoteville later became Nevada City's northwestern section."
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew knocks out a tough ride follows a route from RidewithGPS by "KS", and is linked below. Due to snowfall, JOM was unable to ride the furthest most point of the route (an out and back loop), but either way, spectacular views and marvelous scenery is guaranteed. Bring your climbing gears and plenty of fluid, this is a remote part of California.

Hi Jom, so happy that you came to ride here in Nevada County Ca. I hope you enjoyed the area. I know that our Sierra gravel roads are pretty tough but just incredible to ride. I’ve lived here for over forty years and never get tired of it
LOVED EVERY KM! I plan to return. Only wish I could have ridden the complete loop of the Motherload Route. The snow was a wee bit impassible.
Love Nevada City! Major Cycling history
That looked like a great rip, JOM! Glad you're putting the Drifter through its paces.
Awesome ride, awesome bike.
Hope LGC will heal quickly.
I live in Northern Eastern California in the Lassen National Forest. Most of our grave routes are still covered in snow.
Wow. I expect the thaw may take until July?
Damn that’s a sexy bike.
Please tell us more about those Elite wheels! Looks like a great ride; what a day!
I have a video coming out shortly showing the features and so on... review coming a little later.
"A community?...they are little bastards!" Too funny. Great place to ride...sorry to hear about the GF's hand...great meeting her. Hope she heals up fast.
Sharp stem and seatpost, to be sure. What's your complete bike wt?
When you are out in the beautiful countryside do you ever worry about running into the wrong animals? I love riding gravel roads but I'm always worried about the bears and mountain lions.
I once rode thru Banff and Jasper NP's in Canada. Lots of off dall sheeps 🐏🐑 along the road. They don't care about all those cars, busses and RV's. But when you approach them on a bicycle l, they run away.
Hey Jerry, I would carry Bear spray if I was riding in areas prevalent for those critters. As for a mountain lion, I haven't thought about it... if I had the option, I would probably U-turn the bike down the hill ASAP. I have seen bears in North Carolina and in Florida (Ocala National Forest), but all have done a runner anytime they sensed me. My encounters with deer and kangaroos in Australia have been more interesting, in that they appear randomly with no notice... had a few near misses.
@@GravelCyclist yep, I u-turned once because of a black bear crossing the road. Ended up hitchhiking by that area. In retrospect I'm sure the bear was more scared of me.
Nevada City resident here…I have only come upon a mountain lion once. I came up from behind him and thought it was a yellow lab for a moment. Once I realized it was a cat I stopped. My brakes alerted the cat and he scooted off the trail immediately. But, (and here’s the thing,) he didn’t go all that far. I could still clearly see him crouching in the bushes. It was as if he thought he was invisible or something. After watching each other for awhile I continued since he was between me and home. He simply watched me pass and that was that.
Great video, do you have a downloadable route for this ride?
See the video description, route, etc, is linked there.
@@GravelCyclist thank you!
Is that road presently closed to car traffic?
Hello there, there was no obvious closure. If you see the video just before the snow was piled up, I was riding through vehicle tracks, so at least one person attempted to drive through. I am certain this was pretty recent snow, it may have dissipated a week later, unless there was further snowfall? This ride happened on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
What garmin do you use please 🙏?
Garmin 1040 Solar.
California has it going on. We pay the weather tax to prove it
Those taxes hit the working middle class harder (me)
