I Drove Through Philadelphia. This Is What I Saw

- There aren't very many nice places in downtown Philadelphia. This is one of them.
For this edition of dashboard tours, I drove through downtown Philadelphia. Sadly, it was a cold and dreary and kinda rainy afternoon. The day was Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at about 2 pm
Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the country. It was founded in 1682. Here’s the route I chose. It begins on the west side of downtown, winds around the city hall and other government buildings in the heart of the city, and then tracks east through midtown village and Old City. We’ll see an interesting mix of government buildings, historical architecture, some shopping and dining and a few neighborhoods.
I found Philadelphia to be a really dirty city. The parts I’m showing here are fine, but as you wind your way into different pockets of downtown and the fringes of downtown, things are NOT very clean. 10358. Here’s a quick look at how things look just a 5 minute drive from the downtown area we’re going to see for this driving tour. Most of the perimeters of Philadelphia are certainly not like downtown proper.
Here’s the rest of a short drive through downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I just love how every one in the comments is saying that there are more nice places than just Downtown Philly and as a Philly native I agree. I love my City. Go Philly!!!
Yay Markesha!!
He said its dirty then proceeds to drive through clean downtown
I absolutely LOVE Philly. I have been there only once (1997) as I live and am from Michigan (born in Detroit, grew up in northern Michigan-Cheboygan County-, and now live in Genesee County-61 miles north-northwest of Detroit), but I absolutely agree with you. I have been to Center City (I thought locals didn't refer to it as 'downtown'), the South Philly Sports Complex, and South Street - shops and Jim's Steaks. However the city looks so much different with the Comcast Center, and they Comcast Innovation Center. Lincoln Financial Field, Xfinity Live, and Citizens Bank Park weren't built when I was last there, either.
Philly seems like a hybrid of NYC, Detroit, Baltimore, and a little Chicago sprinkled in.
@@JW-uy2on get off my comment with this non-sense. You already named other places than just Center City. Which was the whole point of my comment in the first place.
@@JW-uy2on You forgot mount airy and the upper North East. Parts of Germantown and parts of east and west Oak Lane.
Orchard street is in Frankford which is a good 4 miles from downtown Philly... Can we get some actual philadelphians in here...
Yup! There are many, many nice places in Philly aside from Center City. This video is proof of that. He’s in university city for some of it lol!

As a Philly native, it's downtown. People in North Philly called it downtown.
As a uk native we call our centres ../. downtowns.....the high street.
@@phillygrunt2154 been here my whole life (42) and we always said downtown. I didn't start calling it cc until I worked there. But again I'm from the North side so going downtown made sense. People in South Philly called it going IN town.

Lifelong Philadelphian here. People just love to hate on Philly but you 'd be hard pressed to find a better place to be, especially these days. Things that go overlooked in countless other cities are front page national news here. Don't know where the hate comes from but, if you want some damn good food and some of the best beer in the country, and smartest sports fans as well. This is where it's at!
Yesssss!
There's definitely good places to live in Philly. I'm not a city person so I'm in the burbs outside. I like having a bigger house and land lol.
I live at suburbs. There other cities that have more to offer. I could name so many cities that have better food and more diverse culture, Boston, NYC, LA, Toronto. I've traveled and know people from different cities. They think Philly is ghetto

Philly might be the single most underrated large city in North America. Huge, bustling downtown with some really beautiful architecture. It's really cleaned up the last 10 years and there's so many new developments, eventually it will be the next Chicago or Toronto. Philadelphia doesn’t have a “Downtown.” It’s called “Center City.” And it’s no different than any other large city in this country. Good areas and bad areas. And we love it
It's all perspective..When you are IN Center City or looking for your bus stop or El stop, it is "Center City" describing a general area that has relatively undefined boundaries. Even people two blocks away from City Hall call City Hall Center City because the actual center is considered to be City Hall. When you are headed there from the north, it is referred to as downtown, in town or into town depending on how close you are it seems. If standing on a huge rock looking south and you see large buildings but you're not headed there, its Center City.. HEY LOOK, there's Center City!! Not sure what South Philly people call it... Funny, we generally gave the city nicknames depending on how we get there from where we are at. And they have stuck. An unwritten geographic identification that you had better know..Now, more importantly, try to find the lines in the street that identify what lane you are supposed to be in while dodging manhole covers... Good luck man!!!
It’s a downtown tho
We love that the police were defunded too! City of brotherly love.
I call it Central City! Lol
Born and raised in Filthadelphia and we ALWAYS called it 'downtown'.
Moved away in 2007, and I miss Philly; the food, the people (who really need to think better of themselves, they're really good people), my neighborhood... ah good times.
I think u did the right thing man
You give primepoint an example of what I was speaking of to the content creator. It is not the buildings the griminess politics or poverty it is the people of Philadelphia or any City for that matter that makes a city of town a hamlet a village what have you not the material things of it it is the people in Philadelphia has some of the most beautiful people from the most beautiful communities despite its challenges folks in Philadelphia are beautiful and then points when it gets hard individuals and Philly come together that part you can't show from the outside you have to speak to the people and hopefully the video content developer would do something in regards to speaking to the people of the places that he is videoing and speaking on in a limited knowledge of even where he's video taping no punctuation or edited needed I see I said
I move to san Francisco and mam what a mistake and waste of time .. im coming back though because i miss wawa lol
Miss the city, don't miss the nasty mean not nice people!
The people suck. The food is all right but limited. The only thing cool about Philly (I live here, btw) is the history.
Center City maybe the the cleanest, but it is not the only nice area in Philadelphia. South Philly, Fishtown and parts of Northeast Philly may not be as sanitized as Center City for sure. However they are safe, vibrant and bustling neighborhoods with a lot to offer.
Come on, man. I live in a suburb outside of Philly. Philly is disgusting. It's needs to be burnt down along with its people so it doesn't destroy the areas around it.
@@jdamp9786 Some parts are beyond rehabilitation.
There is crime and trash (cups on streets) in parts of philly where it can be deemed sketchy. However, I do agree that there is some areas in philly that are nicer than expected. Near the stadiums even is nice homes. I live close by and I legit see the good that’s there.
That’s right. I forgot nick must be from Beverly Hills lol 😂
Don't be fooled it go down in all of those areas
Apparently you have never visited the many huge wooded parks. Wissahickon Valley Park bordering on Chestnut hill, Fairmont park, French creek stare park, Deleware Canal Stare park to mention only a few! 🌳
Exactly! Chestnut Hill Mount Airy. Try to get more knowledge before you blog. Oh and the clip where there’s a Drexel University underpass is not downtown: it’s University City. Your presumptuous negative attitude is astounding to me!
He’s not very good. He missed stating City Hall’s worldwide prominence. And he failed to note that he was passing the birthplace of the nation. Kelly Drive is noted as one of the most beautiful entryways to a downtown area in the world. And our colonial architecture? Society Hill? Nothing. That said the city has looked grungy since the pandemic. But if this guy needs wooded areas, then don’t film cities.
I recall Germantown in NE Philly being very attractive.
@@thomasceneri867 Exactly. I grew up in Mount Airy in the 70s and 80s and I loved walking the entire area that I grew up in.

Shocking as this might sound...other parts of the world use trash cans.
Dumping trash on the sidewalk is ugly even if it's one day of the week
@@tjroe5190 i agree with you but alot of people in the city is actually poor and a trash can is least of their worries when they have bills and buying food just to get through the week and possibly the month. Also the garbage people usually throws the trash cans and they break after a while

Nowadays it's more at the Democrats feet but Republicans have their fair share of issues (not using money when it's needed for one or delegating too much to specific things that don't need it for decades, like the War chest) but most of the issues today are Demcorat policies that are wasting money (Critical race theory, global warming/climate change (very little human activity affects either, it's mostly just a cyclic pattern that will happen with or with humans and cannot be stopped no matter what we do...at best we can aim to enhance current technology so it pollutes less but that's about it...cause as far as pollution goes we know it creates harmful chemicals for the human body so i can go along with the pollution hurts humans route more so than CO2 will kill the earth via climate change route), let everyone through the border, defund the police, etc) rather than fixing issues that need it (border, infrastructure, economy, actually helping the police force do their jobs and give them means to prove their innocence or guilt (via body camera on all officers that are on at all times while on the clock for one), passing laws that would reform/create new ports and make things move faster/hire more people, reform immigration system to make processing them faster, etc).
Personally i want a new party/coalition of non party affiliated candidates to take power and push actual common sense policies rather than the trash our current politicians pass.

Missing here - Most older US cities are FAR better explored on foot, or by public trans. Philadelphia is a renowned driving nightmare, and the route of this video, though showing the density in office highrise district, misses all of the residential ‘hoods. I’m not saying that Philadelphia is w/o shortcomings and distinct problems. But it is a functional and (to many) desirable urban place to call home. I left Philly in 1992 in my late 20s after having gone to college there and starting my career there. I'm not sure if I miss Philly or just miss being in my 20s.
After reading the comments about Philadelphia, I may consider wanting to move there later on since it's close to NYC to be close to friends and family. Any suggestions on what part of Philadelphia is a good place to live? I know Kensington is a high crime area in Philly.
It all depends on what you prefer: Condo, Row Home, do you want a yard? Do you want to be in the thick of everything, a quieter neighborhood in city or a close suburb? Will you have a car? Price range is also a factor (it’s a lot cheaper than anywhere in NYC)
@@lovesgucci1I definitely want a detached house with a yard not far from Philly. I have a car. Is it true that Philly has a lot of raccoons day and night?
@@mmcdonald1000 There’s great suburban areas outside the city but for a single home, even if it’s small, can be more expensive the closer to the city you get (which is true wherever.) Conshocken (closer to Northwest Philly), Jenkintown (closer to North/Northeast Philly)are close to the city but leafy (kinda looks like New Rochelle, if you can picture that) Homes are older but pretty. Then you have town in Bucks county (really close to Trenton & a quick train to NYC.) Depending on the neighborhood, the homes are newer but you’re a bit further from downtown (Center City) Philly. Huntington Valley, Wynnewood… All great areas. There’s also nice neighborhoods in the northeast section of the city, with single homes, of all sizes (kinda similar to Staten Island) Most important, they’re safe neighborhoods.

Philly is the city of neighborhoods. There’s plenty that are nice. It has changed over the years, but I wouldn’t change a thing about my childhood. It was an amazing place to grow up. For a big city Philly always had a small town feel and was like no other big city. Each neighborhood had its own culture, backgrounds, and certain things they were known for. People had pride in their neighborhoods. Each neighborhood had its own culture, food, history, sports, nationalities etc. The crime has always been high as a whole, but it is mostly concentrated in certain neighborhoods (which have unfortunately spread over the past 30 years) Philly in the 80s and 90s was great as a kid. Wish I could go back to those times today and play games like wire ball, suey, halfsies, stickball, freedom etc. if you wanted to go to playground every neighborhood had more than one to catch a pick up game. A park every neighborhood had one nearby, an avenue to stroll or shop, even a creek or a river to go fishing. I could go And on. To sum it up … it may not be the best looking, or cleanest but everyone form here, even when you move away… has a special place in their hearts for Philly.
You forgot the most Historical Area, the Independence Mall area and Independence Hall, along with many others... those areas are quite pretty and great for taking pictures....
Happy Halloween, Nick Johnson. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
You too!! Did you dress up???
I just drove through it and it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the US.
In the 1970's I took a bus to go to new jersey to visit my grandparents and had to switch buses in Phila. and walked throught the city with a suitcase passing the Verizon bldg with a fountain (my job in my city) and many of the bldgs were very very old...
Memories Bobbie!
I love this city. So historic. Miss my stay at the Double Tree on Locust and Broad St. Miss Pat's cheesesteaks, and of course my Birds. Love you PHILLY.
Philadelphia has very high crime and poverty rate. But it’s mainly confined to certain areas like most large cities. There are a number of nice neighborhoods, but they are in pockets and always walking distance to a bad area.
@@mactastic144 🙄

Philadelphia is in the top 10 cities of the future,a lot of people don't know that ,so many development going on 💪
As others have posted, you did not see all of Philly. It has common areas like parts of West, North, and South Philly, maybe some of Germantown, but there are areas like the Northeast, Wynnefield, Wynnefield Heights, Overbrook Park, Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Roxborough, Manayunk, Old City- Fishtown, Society Hill, Oxford Circle Cheltenham, etc. that are very beautiful areas.
We have townhouses, Tudors, Victorians, farmhouse architectural-type homes within the city, and the region is even more beautiful! Places like Montgomery County, Delco, Chester County, Bucks all have areas that rival NYC suburb metros and DC metros for its beauty, but significantly cheaper.
Downtown has been a work in progress due to antiquated laws on buildings, civic organizations, and tax and transportation infrastructure. Additionally, we are just 80 miles from Downtown NY. Companies choose there over Philly. There are some things on the books that if done, will make it a world-class city. Unfortunately, political leadership is poor and limits how great this city can become.
Cheltenham is in Montgomery County, not in the city.
They were beeping at him every second LOL. You gotta drive fast in Philly bruh.
Great video! I think the rainy day gave it a Gotham City feel. Perfect for this time of year.
I know I give you crap, but I like what you do, and i like you Nick. Keep the videos coming!
Also, my son and I love Rocky, so it's on my bucket list to take him here. I'll show him this video. :-)
You give me crap about what?
@@NickJohnson about what you consider dangerous. LOL But it's all in good fun.
You showed trash at the curb on trash day and called the entire city dirty. Did you drive to Mt. Airy? No. Like all major cities some parts are dirty some are not.
Enjoyed the trip...saw the Pa Academy of Fine Arts where my parents met in1939....wished you had driven down Broad to Pine St....where I went to art school...in '62 was then known as the Phildelphia College of Art. But it's been many years since I've been in Phila...so the trip was worthwhile.
REALLY NICE DOWNTOWN area LOTS of NEWER structures , but I feel something is wrong when there’s nothing being done to upgrade the areas you spoke of ( 5 minutes outside of this area ) Are there any low rise condos just outside to area for people to choose from that want to live close to this area ?
I prefer the mix of old and new skyscrapers that are found on the East and Midwest as opposed to what’s out west
I think the honking alone would force me to leave the city. Jesus Christo.
I just visited Philly and some parts look like a 3rd world country.
Some parts of New York, San Fran, Chicago, and LA look like 3rd world countries too. It’s not unique to Philly. Philly actually has a MUCH lower homeless rate then those cities.
Another great video-thumbs up
WaWa, Target and Walgreens are now closed on Chestnut St. Thx for the video.
I don't understand how some of these people passed their driving exam.
An episode that perfectly illustrates Philadelphia drivers. I was at a red light that just turned green, but there was a pedestrian crossing the street, so I had to wait a few seconds before I could move. Wouldn't you know it, but several cars behind me immediately starting blaring their horns because I didn't immediately start moving when the light turned. What did they want me to do, run down the pedestrian?
Just one of the many everyday reasons that I moved awayat age 18 and won't live in that area ever again. There's just too much anger and hostility in that city.
@@eurodoc6343 Wow. This aggression seems to be an issue among many drivers in the Northeast (this is coming from someone who grew up in the Northeast), especially in the larger cities /metro areas. I didn’t know it was that big of an issue in Philadelphia until now.
Philly is all about diversity. They put the bar low to accommodate their low IQ voters. It keeps the politicians in power and the plebs in poverty. Welfare doesn't help.
Philly is a great city lots of fun places
Church and Orchid intersection at 00:53 is in Frankford. It’s like 20 minutes to Downtown\Center City - i do love your videos tho Nick! I’m from Philly and I commented on your FL video and asked you to do one of Southwest FL and the Lee Islands since that’s we’re i live now 😃 Love your work bro!!!
Thanks for this, probably the only chance I will get to see Philadelphia downtown
He actually didn’t even show half of it
Nice red light running
Ooh, cool. It's crazy how in one area it looks amazing, and in others, it's basically Camden NJ
Nah. Camden is way too desolate. Lol. We not that bad. Ugh
Nah Philly is bad but Camden is 20 brackets up Philly can’t compare to Camden, NJ in any category
The City Center has a lot of beautiful architecture but the surrounding area is abject poverty literally 5 minutes away!
Definitely can't compare Philly to jersey we different in philly
@@hoodbull8728 I mean Philly is Ight But some parts of NJ crime rate is off the roof places Like Camden so if u saying Philly is more rough than Jersey your wrong
Yeah you definitely showed some of the nicer areas! And I see a lot of Philly people on here defending Philly, of course, what choice do they have? they live/work there. Best of luck.
South Philly is nice especially by the stadium’s that may just because Im a Philly sports fan but whenever I’m there it’s always dope seeing all the stadiums right next to each other with the sixers legends walk with statues and our statues outside of that whole area of different Philly sports legends I love it
He don’t know Philly 😂
Boul was tripping whole way thru
Philly is the 6th largest city in America; Phoenix just overtook it for 5th place.
Because people are moving out of Philly. Philadelphia doesn't even rank in Alpha or Beta city categories I believe..but neither does Phoenix
Pennsylvania just took illinois 5th place in population
Phoenix is dying of Thurst. East Coast still has fresh 💧
Nice to see some parallels between good and bad Nick. Good transparency as a non bias journalist.
Hard to call Phoenix a city it’s literally just suburban McMansions with a suburban shopping centers even the downtown looks suburban
One of those high rises is the Comcast office building around city hall
Want to mention, downtown Philly is called Center city. Thanks for the tour and maybe tour some neighborhoods next time.
They sure love their car horns in Philadelphia
Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill are very nice areas.
Who is this random person and what qualifies him to comment on a city he obviously doesn’t live in, or seemingly even know anything about?
He drove down Market with a dash-cam, and this is somehow interesting and insightful?
UA-cam is so freaking dumb sometimes.
Were those horns all aimed at your driving? I don't usually hear that many. I live in Philly,10miles from the government buildings, and it is quite nice, green and quiet here. It's a big city. Some of the donut neigbs around Center City are extremely poor and dangerous. Most of the city is not like that.
I think so. Driving at the speed limit with a camera sticking out the sunroof would definitely cause that. One car passed you on the right and than made the next light.
I’m from DC which is newer, compact and well maintained. I love going to Philly. It’s a true city. Bigger and better than Baltimore just a few miles away but significantly closer than nyc
I like to think you can do almost everything you can do in New York in half the time and cost.
I've never heard so much horn-blowing in my life! What a lot of stressed-out, angry people driving everywhere. No thanks, I'll stay in little Ormond Beach, Florida. Sure it gets hot here and I've been thru my share of hurricanes, but I'm right on the beach and life is much more relaxed here. There's no place like home.
From Philly and tried Florida. Definitely a different pace- Ormond kinda sleepy and Daytona a criminal haven. Moved back to Philly- no place like home.
How unfortunate for you that you didn’t take the time to experience and appreciate the various parks in the area. For example, you drove pass Independence National Park. A short walk from there (2 blocks South) is Washington Square. Wonderful area for walking, sitting and relaxing. Also, you were only a couple blocks away from Rittenhouse square (on the other side of Broad Street) another enjoyable area. Philly is full of wonderful history, culture and food.
A couple of years ago, I had a work related move to Silver Spring MD. It’s nice but it’s not Philly. I’m homesick. 😢
I can't stand it there
