But why are the Aussies not like that? What is it about the psyche or culture that makes them so aggressive in their play? Cos as a people you seem really laid back.

Australia was originally a penal colony, people were sent here for ridiculous crimes, like stealing a loaf of bread, and given a 20-year sentence, even though more often than not people at the time were starving. Then to make things worse, the imperious English rule in Australia was incredibly harsh, convicts were given 600 lashes, for talking back, etc! So you can maybe see why we have a disdain for the authority that has been burned into our psyche we have an "us and them mentality" which permeates through sport. The laid-back part is due to the size, and climate, of Australia, I suspect, I mean what's the use of rushing around when it's so bloody hot,!! and to drive from one side of Australia to the other can 3-4 days!!! I have met many people who have moved here and are amazed at the vastness of our country. To give this a little context England can fit inside Victoria (our smallest state) 17 times. Finally, we were nicknamed the "lucky country" due to our huge repository of natural resources, etc. I grew up in the eighties by the beach, and you could quite easily go on government benefits no questions asked, and live in a flat (Condo) by the beach with some mates smoke dope, and surf without a concern in the world. But don't be fooled those days have all but vanished here, we have now become a nation that is one of the most expensive to live in, consumed with capitalism, and one of the most over-policed populations, full of punctilious laws and citizens, who place more value on inanimate than the animate!!!
