- Quinn Kelsey sings Rigoletto’s Act II aria in the New Year’s Eve gala premiere of Bartlett Sher’s new production. Conductor: Daniele Rustioni. 2021-22 season. Videography by Pete Scalzitti.
I never thought I would see Rigoletto sung like it's a song in a Sondheim show.........but I guess here we are.
Tombstone: I assume you remember our last physical encounter.
"Painfully. But I told you before, I don't look the other way."
Where is the legato? This is Verdi!
Scandaloso
😢🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Where is Cornell MacNeil?
He's dead. 😂
Me gusta el material vocal, pero la interpretación tiene tintes del tipo MUSICAL COMEDY
bellowing and shouting and whaling. What a shambles of a voice and a performance. Is this where opera is in our time? What a far cry from even the decades before
What give you the right to troll this great artist.? Your living in the past.

@@judy6238 I dunno...speaking of spelling...It might be fun to see someone whaling on stage. Maybe in the Dutchman or Peter Grimes?
It's "wailing," my dear.
This must be what the dying breaths of the art of opera sound like.

The comments bore me . Free hate for nothing. He was a wonderful Rigoletto. With also a capacity to act his caracter. I enjoyed every minute of this show. Thank you metropolitan.
I can really tell you have no much sense of how a good baritone voice sounds like. This is just horrible. There is a reason why people are being rude with their comments.
At least listen to how the great Italian baritone singers interpret rigoletto.
You enjoyed because you don’t know any better. But it’s a wonderful thing to yet have to discover the greats of the past.
@@lucabernard489 💀 how kind of you to presume I don't know any better. I didn't say he is the best . I said I find him good . Quite a difference . A lot of qualities are required for an opera singer and I find that some lack acting talent which I think he has . Thank you for the laugh though 😂
@@Vertasoie Well said! Let's not let toxic gatekeeping ruin our enjoyment of opera.
It is far from the Italian belcanto unfortunately, but it would be good for a choir.
The you tube trolls and opera queens are out of their cages.
Sounds phlegmy...like there's no ringing in the voice. Wow. This is the Met????
he's probably a little bit fluey or a cold or something coz sounds way better in other videos

He's retiring (Tomassini) but... this excerpt the Met chooses to put up sounds crude, weird, inaccurate and often just dreadful. Each to his own, I suppose.

His voice needs more Power but it's a fine performance
Clearly you wern't in the house. His voice is gigantic. Quinn is one of the few who can fill the house.
Do people understand what video sound quality does? It will never sound as great on video than in person. Also, everyone is so negative! Geez, yall get up there and sing something. This dude is smashing it!

Well...then why do others baritone sound good on youtube?
oh yeah? So why does George Gagnidze, Dimitry Hvorovstovski and Terffel sound good on youtube?
He was fantastic.
First time I heard Mr. Kelsey was on a Richard Tucker gala several years ago. I just loved his voice, and have been happily following his progress. His Rigoletto is not like others I have heard, but I very much enjoyed the live online broadcast, and will be listening again on Tuesday.
This piece is heart breaking. So beautifully performed.
Wonderful performance and a super Rigoletto. Enjoyed very much.
Non è un fuoriclasse, ma s'impegna e cerca di dare del suo meglio. Si merita un 6 pieno😅
Sad, very sad. Nothing else to say.
Explain troll
then don’t say anything, why waste our time?
This is absolutely beautiful. So heart breaking. Wow
How the mighty MET has fallen :(! (He is no Tito Gobbi for sure :(!)
There was only one Horostovsky - the best Rigoletto lately - but he died young - so this is what we have left - so enjoy!
SUPERB QUINN!!!!!!!!
You are either a paid shill or a troll. Either way stay away from opera as listeners like you are the reason it sucks today.....
@@TeresaTucci Go back to your parent's basement and get your hearing checked. You have proven that you know absolutely nothing about singing, especially as it comes to Rigoletto.

What a shame for MET to allow that level of singing on their stage

You must have a high regards for this singer to think he's so good. So good they should have given it to someone less talented. If you really think he's that bad, show me your singing this song and show you're better. Otherwise, stay quiet and appreciate the beauty.
Excellent
Get your hearing checked, troll.
he sounds like he's trying to sing while very sick.

@@vincec8218 she does not have a gorgeous voice. It's so constricted and nasal
I heard him as Germont at Opera Memphis over 10 years ago and was overwhelmed with his beautiful, rich, resonant sound. His voice is now unrecognizable to me! This is terrible as is his Di Luna. Why js he crooning Verdi?! All this straight tone sounds like he is singing a Bach cantata. It is really sad that we are now supposed to accept this as a Verdi baritone.
He knows what he’s doing. You don’t know what your saying. These artists don’t need UA-cam critics like you.

really?? is this the all-famed Quinn Kelsey? what a let down! unstable sound emission to the point of sounding like different voices in the same sentence, attempts legato but runs out of breath, very limited emotion comes through the singing and frankly sub-par acting for 21st century standards. a big let down for me!

Provincial singing. He was merely adequate in this role at Santa Fe over a decade ago now. Rather sad.

the acting doesn't excite, you can't feel anything, and this is one of the most important scenes and like.... You can't feel anything! He has zero squillo, no big sound, small singing. And this "La porta, la porta" was horrible, there was a delay in the voice 0:50
ingolato, fraseggio pessimo, voce brutta, acuti indietro, inascoltabile.
I don’t get why he is loved on UA-cam and why he’s a regular performer at the Met. Terrible nasal sound, seems like he doesn’t open his mouth enough. On this recording his voice is also small. Rigoletto? I’m sorry, this is too much…
ok deaf
I agree. Maybe the problem of the recording?
@@05350 for sure, listen to how the orchestra is also muffled; voices can't be judged by recordings,
Sumi Jo sounds amazing in recordings but don't work in theater, Sondra's voice sounds horrible in recordings but it's very big and tender live
I seriously recommend making your recital hidden on UA-cam if you’re going to post comments like this.
First, his sound clearly isn't nasal. Second, to make the sound not nasal (if it were) opening his mouth more wouldn't solve the issue (but there is obviously none to be solved). Thirdly, I agree that here his voice sounds weirdly small (compared to other singers), but very beautiful and I am sure that the voice would be heard to the last row but I'm not sure and that's a guess based on this recording.
Вот и голос есть и петь умеет, но что это за исполнение. Это уже не Риголетто, это пьяный мужик, не вызываюший сочуствия.

If I could talk to this singer, I would just ask him to please sing from his heart. His singing lacks emotion/passion. To me, he sings this aria like a German lied. I heard him sing with Christian van Horn in a concert at Carnegie Hall. In that performance, he was also lacking passion.
