Valchek getting the unit back together for the wrong reason is the funniest and most brilliant story beat this season. Al Brown did an amazing job playing Stan Valchek, rest in peace.
I cant remember if it was the dvd commentary or an interview, but the creator, David Simon, spoke about the lengths the writers went to create believable, relatable scenes of everyday situations in the show. His reasoning was that if the characters and world building felt familiar and authentic, when you add fictional elements, the audience will willingly come along for the ride. In addition to being an incredible social commentary, the wire balances it with 'realistic' characters better than just about any other show ive ever seen. This show belongs in a time capsule to explain to people in 100yrs what it was like living in 21st century america.
I remember them talking about the importance of putting in little details for that extra touch of authenticity. They mentioned making sure there were cats, dogs, rats and pigeons frequently seen in the background. The wildlife of the hood.
More great commentary. Always glad for your insights. Omar's been in B-More this whole season, not NYC. David Simon explained to Michael K Williams (Omar) that this season needed to happen to show everyone that the War on Drugs was not just a black people/slum village deal in the states. It affects us all.
I'm really enjoying watching this series with your commentary. I've seen it a dozen times or more, but it's great to see it from a new perspective. Thank you.
Nailed it! The system more specifically institutions solve some problems but create more complex and difficult ones. Keep an eye on that as you will see more in later seasons.
The first time watching, Season 2 was a bit harder to get through with the Greek storyline; but if you get through it you'll see the best television ever with Seasons 3 and 4
Frank, the more I watch you, the more similarities I see in our lives. I’ve listed many before, but your friend being an insurance salesman reminds me of my friend who owns a debt consolidation business. You teach art, I teach history. We could probably use our skills and knowledge for more nefarious things in life, but our worldview won’t necessarily allow it. Sometimes we’ve gotta just smile and nod as our friends with more questionable morals pay for our dinners occasionally 😂
Why do I feel like Zig's penchant for technology is gunna be the end of him one way or another? I can't tell who he's going to get played by yet (maybe the cops get some dirt on him and leverage him into working with them, or maybe he's careless about whose photos he's taking, or maybe he gets in too deep with the Greek guys' organised crime ring) but someone's going to be able to twist his arm or use him to get to his cousin or Frank for sure
If you're into the Eric Adams story, you should watch the 2003 Film Street Fight, about Cory Booker's first run for Mayor of Newark NJ when he was an absolute unknown.
Hey Frank, do you have any plans to watch the series 'Treme' in the future? Same writer/director and a lot of the same cast as The Wire. It is set in the aftermath of Hurrican Katrina, but mostly a deep dive into the culture and corruption of the real New Orleans.
The way McNulty catches on to cases is a bad thing. There is a fine line between being determined to get the right people, to not realising when you're wrong and willing to frame the wrong people. That would be a good show actually, get a super talented, but over eager young detective and follow that arc through to when he finds out he put someone away with planted evidence... That's not a prediction of McNulty's arc in this show, I'm just talking about the issues of when police can't let go of cases
I’m smiling along with the enthusiasm here :) I agree with another comment that isn’t showing on this device that no way would Avon want to kill D. On reflection though, it does feel like too much of a risk and, maybe, a slight glitch in the writing.
It's not really about Avon wanting to kill D'Angelo (that is definitely a line he would never cross) as the man does love his family and those he considers family. He's been keeping the truth about how D'Angelo has been moving close, literally to just himself and Brianna. It's more of giving D'Angelo a secret test and seeing if he can pass said test. Ultimately though Avon did take a gamble with D'Angelo's life and then try to use him (again) in another of the organization's schemes. It ties back to how D'Angelo feels about being in the game as well as how he feels about being a member of the Barksdale family. So not really a glitch in the writing. Just adding more complexity to the family dynamic between Avon and D'Angelo. Avon is trying (the best way he can from his POV and stems from his own upbringing) to keep D'Angelo connected and close.
@@a6ruled It was a test friend trust me. Remember that to the Barksdales D'Angelo is "weak" and was already close to flipping on them before. If D'Angelo would've "failed" said secret test and died then that would've only strengthend how he was seen. Someone like Avon only knows tough love.

You’re very welcome my friend. Thanks for being here for it.
Minor point of clarification: Beadie didn’t mean $21/hour. She meant 21k per year.
I was about to say same thing
Ziggy's storyline takes a bit to develop but give it time, it winds up being one of the most powerful of the season. Insightful reaction as always.
John Q, man. The film where Denzel plays a father whose son needs a heart transplant.

Thank you for two more great episodes.
Not 22 an hour, 22,5 as In 22,500 Annually

Appreciate you thanks

just what the doc ordered some nice food and another episode reaction
If you are in the mood for yet another series, I recommend Fargo.
I'm pretty sure Omar is back in Baltimore.
Dee is Avon’s nephew.
Edit: I see that you already got the reminder later I’m the episode. 😂
Lol at the people who a couple years ago were saying Eric Adams would be president one day
sheeeeeeeee-it

@@monadreher2428 your “test” theory is interesting. I don’t hate that.

Hurry up with the next reactions. I'm waiting for you now 😆
Thanks for the episodes! That coat doesn't even look good on Zig, does it? Flashing cash for that? maaaan
You're welcome🙏🏾🙏🏾
Just wait, more worlds will collide this season. McNutty’s wife too
