Just gotta say that I went and saw her live performance of "Townie" at Tiny Desk and it absolutely blew my fucking mind ❤ - Primo
To me the way Mitski plays with song structure, dissonant melodies, and the sometimes awkward phrasing of her lyrics is very intentional and there to communicate emotion. She creates a lot of tension, which makes some of her songs maybe uneasy on a first listen, but the beauty of it is the more you listen the more you can find a new kind of harmony or rhythm within them, a melody or a drum pattern that felt unpleasant becomes satisfying. Her album "Retired from sad, new career in business" does that a lot and it's one of my favorites of hers!
On drunk walk home, it really is mitski screaming! Her live ones are even more powerful. From my knowledge, she used to be in a metal band. I can't wait for more reactions, especially to lush and puberty 2
Lol puberty 1 is the one everyone went through

Bury Me At Makeout Creek is a story about a girl falling in love for the first time (aka her first love) in late spring/early summer. Then breaking up in late autumn/early winter. Mitski's vocals sound shaky and she doesn't "finish her sentences" right all on purpose to give it an angsty sound like a teenager. She's committing to the bit.
"Townie" is before she meets the guy that she claims is her first love. The line "I'm holding my breath with a baseball bat though I don't know what I'm waiting for." means that she waiting for love and she feels ready but doesn't exactly know what to look out for.
"First Love/Late Spring" tells you that she met someone she swears is her first love.
"Francis Forever" there's a line that says "And autumn comes when you're not yet done with the summer passing by" and what she means by that is she fears the relationship they have might end.
"Jobless Monday" is when she finally realizes that the relationship is going nowhere. The lines "He only loves me when there's a means he means to end" and, "Take me out, baby" and, "Doesn't matter where we'll be but please under the light of day" all show that she wants to save the relationship and work things out.
"I will" is a song that has everything Mitski's ever wanted to hear from a lover.
(I only know that much but please research about Mitski and listen to her music because she really is a lyrical genius. Definitely react to Puberty 2, which is a completely different story and not connected to this one at all. Thank you so much for listening to Mitski.)
(Also Bury Me At Makeout Creek is actually a line from the Simpsons!)
i think i will is a song written to her lover that's just saying like stop stressing and worrying and everything and just let me love you and it's desperate message is hidden behind loving and kind lyrics
yall should REALLYYY watch some of her live stuff especially from this era,, watch Drunk Walk Home-Live at Palisades, youll see a whole different side of her
Im so scared for you guys to listen to Puberty 2, but also excited 😭😭
We won’t be too harsh! 🫡
That is her yelling in the mic! She screams rlly loud during lives too for that song
her songs are definitely weird without pattern but that's why i like them; she's not boxed into a structure. kind of like brockhampton, everyone hated iridescence for being all over the place but that's what makes the music fun + you can tell she hears songs in her head and can bring them to life without being over polished if that makes sense.
love your videos! you guys are chill
I Will is a personal favourite, she essentially wrote a love song with all of the things she wants someone to write for her. I have a tattoo of the scene from the simpsons this album is named after!
this changed the trajectory of my life as an asian american teenaged girl in like 2017
do you mind sharing how?
@@RicoandPrimo this album feels like being young and reckless to me; at the time, my first real infatuation? was this white guy who was a farmhand and who probably didn’t care if i lived or died tbh. this aspect plus the whole concept of “being the cowboy” or reclaiming the traditional perception of the all-american cowboy just solidified my admiration for her
there’s something so concise and relatable about her music for me- it was one of the first times that music accurately encapsulated how i felt and things that went on back then
Y'all should watch the audio tree version of i don't smoke it sounds better imo
I also love that you're going through the discography almost backwards. The newer stuff is more polished and easier to get into, and you still get to see how her music has changed over time
i love mitski so much and i'm glad so many people are finding her, i just saw her in Mexico City and i cried so much 😭.
not a lot of people talk about her album "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business", probably because it's a lot different from her newer albums, it has more of an orchestral approach and not at all like this album. but it is my personal favorite, might be one of her most personal albums.
i also think you should react to "Lush", it was Mitski's debut album, which she wrote and produced in college for an assignment, lots of keyboard. sounds amazing and it has some amazing lyrics. my personal favorite song in the album is "Abbey".
you guys should check out Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers, there's lots of different tones throughout the album, very emotional and descriptive lyrics. one of my all time favorite albums!!! phoebe's voice is so gentle and it can really make you cry.
The fact she said texas is a landlocked state was a inside joke with someone she knows
i believe this was my first mitski album so i hold a lot of love for it, it's so beautifully written !!! she's insane to me for songs like francis forever, last words of a shooting star and i dont smoke (which are defo my fav ones)
Obama had Heartbreaker from Laurel Hell on his yearly playlist. It's an 80s synthpop and electronic rock
Am I a mitski FAN? Pull up in the washing machine
i think that land is inhospitable is a fresher and cleaner sound for mitski and so descriptive. It really paints a picture and is so cohesive
you guys are so chill I love your videos, it's like reacting to music with my older brothers
Mitski and patrick both do production together. And there is no puberty 1. She makes the lyrics first and beat later so ur correct
I think you guys will enjoy her performances on audiotree live
im late but you NEED to listen to drunk walk home live i honestly prefer that version its amazing
Now that you say it, this album IS the puberty one 😭
I thought you guys would give it a 4-6, I'm surprised. I don't go back to this album anymore but it was my favorite during graduating high school in the pandemic. It brings back bad memories. Can't wait for Puberty 2 it has a lot of my favorites
Haaaaaaaay since yall ar suckers for agood Melody trust me go and lestien to FIONNA APPLE start with when the pawn ......
they think mitski's trying hard to fit the lyrics to meet a certain melody. I don't think they'd get fiona tbh. both w artists tho!
i think y’all should listen to lush, personally I think it’s one of her best albums even tho it’s her first one !!
Been waiting for this reaction/analysis! This is one of my favorite albums of hers, but I didn't mind the critic as I love how you guys keep it real but still in a respectful way.
please listen to Audiotree Live version of I Don't Smoke😭
There is a motherfrecking videeeeoooooooooooooooooooo{townie}
Carry me out gives me goosebumps every time I hear it
I don’t smoke is better in live!!😭
god men are so
say it
stupid
@@RicoandPrimo dumb !
@@RicoandPrimo dense
@@alexam3007 thx
THE MUSIC VIDEO WAS RIGHT THERE
I love the researching session, from pitchfork to fantano 😭 you guys are the best!!
14:28 this song was covered my Marceline on adventure time
there isn't a puberty 1 but in my opinion puberty 2 represents your early to mid 20s when you're still trying to figure out your life and everything is so much more serious and that period of your life represents a second puberty when you're still growing and being immature despite being told that you're an adult and need to have your life figured out.
This is probably my second favorite album from her, Lush being my absolute favorite. I feel like it’s because the lyrics in makeout creek speak to me so much. I’d love for you guys to listen to Lush because I’d say it’s her most different album (and it was also a school project!) and it kind of sounds like a horror movie soundtrack to me
Also I’d say the audiotree live version of I Don’t Smoke sounds way better than the album one 😭
@@milftickler69yesss it does 😭😭
As a longstanding Mitski fan I love the way you two reacted to this. I think this was a more experimental phase for Mitski during her career and like you said her “finding her voice.” Great reaction 👍 Get Mitski on the next video 🙏 😅Awesome commentary. New sub ♥️
The best album ever
tallahasse by the mountain goats [the crowd says together]
33:06 the salton sea is a very Interesting place (I don't really remember why but it means smth crazy😂 in the songs context)
Also PLEASE listen to the live version of Drunk Walk Home
40:56 this song is written as what she wants someone to sing to her btw❤
The Salton Sea used to be a remarkable beach in California however due to pollution is now one of the most toxic beaches ever with the people living nearby contracting respiration problems like asthma so in it's meaning Mitski will retire herself to toxicity (like the song).
The fact that "Last Words of a Shooting Star" is about suicide 💔💔💔💔💔
drunk walk home hits so different live, it’s so good
okay next i recommend listening to either puberty 2 or lush (lush was actually a college project), and yeah mistki definitely plays a lot with structure, pitch, and kind of landing in the right places like you guys mentioned, but to me thats the beauty of her music, it makes her songs feel more raw and straight from the heart, although yeah it can be a little cringe on the first listen you do get used to it, love your reactions keep it up guys🙏
I think you might like the audiotree version of ”i dont smoke” more
When I heard Texas is a landlocked state I just believed it😭
i love every mitski album and i never see people recommending 'retired from sad, new career in business' when one of my favourite tracks (humpty) is on there
ALLLL THE EGGSHELLSSS ARE OON THE GROUND
you guys should eventually listen to laurel hell!!

I find that any mitski album you’re not sure about or maybe don’t like as much improves so much on multiple listens
Yes, 10000%. With tliiasaw i didnt become obsessed with tracks like the frost or when memories snow till the 3rd/4th listen. -Primo
@@RicoandPrimo I love that!! I wasn’t really vibing with be the cowboy the first time I heard it bc it was so much more upbeat and pop than her previous albums but it’s turned out to be one of my favorites. It’s like Lana. Every album had a specific sound and feel, I find myself gravitating to specific albums when I’m feeling a certain type of way
Been waiting for thisssss
Thanks for your patience. More mitski to come!!!
me toooooo
Can’t wait for the puberty 2 reaction 😈
You guys should listen or react to the audiotree live versions of some of the songs. Love your content btw!
you guys should def listen to lush or puberty 2 soon!!
It's so interesting to see her old work cause it changes a lot
retired from sad when 😼😼🙀🙀
the thing i like about her music is that she is able to tell stories through poetic words. she uses metaphors and the structure and tone of a song to build a certain story or scenario or a specific feeling or experience that if you understand where its coming from, you start to understand. awkward phrasing and dissonance tend to be intentional from her, and if there is ANYTHING a musician loves, its intentional song writing and composing. A lot of her music are more metaphorical, and the actual lyrics dont mean what they're talking about but rather than feeling or emotions or the scenario you would normally associate with that.
DO LUSH PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU I LOVE THAT ALBUM ITS SOJAB DVHAW KDGAWHVJDCAKHD AKDHJACDHGAWDAWCDJAHCDJAWDIYAWCDF

ive been loving your guys mitski review, honestly another artist i feel you would like is twenty one pilots, heavy drums, crazy lyrics its a real journey that could potentially be right up your alley!
Hey, will you do reaction to the “lush”??
You guys should do a Born to Die / Paradise album review from Lana Del Rey
the lana fans are going to dox us
@@RicoandPrimoi know I've seen the comments there, but theres plenty of us who wont
i feel like depending on what your own music taste is, you'll have a different fav mitski album. which is great imo! i love how broad and yet unique to her mitski's music is. can't wait to watch your other mitski videos!!!

LUSH ALBUM
you guys should really react to her raw live vocals ESPECIALLY the audiotree live like i dont smoke audiotree version sounds so much better imo
Please give Laurel Hell a listen I think it would be interesting. Thank u all🙏🏻🙏🏻
LETS GOOO I WAS WAITING FOR TBIS ONE!!!
Hey, Ive watched this like multiple times, love how you guys analize everhthing, if I had a recommendation for you guys it would definitely be Magdalena Bay, They release short Mini-mixes full of really creative twists and atmospheric turns. The newest one they dropped is my favorite (Volume 3, i think its like 5 or 6 songs)
Laurel Hell is definitely the most similar to Be The Cowboy; there's kinda a joke that Mitski switches up her style every two albums
HER BEST ALBUM AAAAH
Carry Me Out always hit's, her singing about committing suicide by hanging herself is so wild and sad
Puberty 2 is imo way better then bmamc, tho some songs are kinda harder to get into. Yall should definitely listen to it next.
I Dont smoke studio version is weird but the live at audiotree version is really good
W🎉
Lush album when
could you do Bôa, Grimes, Lady gaga or Marina and the Dimonds these all rock each album

Also on the topic of listening to laurel hell, I think it would be interesting to hear you guy's opinion on it since most fans either hate it or really like it
