Welcome to Portugal! We're delighted to have your family join our community. May your new home be filled with joy, warmth, and wonderful memories. The Portuguese are known for their warm hospitality. Newcomers are often greeted with genuine friendliness and a willingness to help. While the bureaucracy can be challenging at first, with time, one becomes accustomed to the processes. Despite the initial difficulties, living in Portugal is rewarding, thanks to the welcoming nature of its people.
Not sure where you wound up with looking for a car, but one of my favorite things about living in Portugal is the ability to live without a car. Now, easier for my wife and I since it is just the two of us without any younger kids to deal with. We lived in Lisbon for about a year and a half, and loved it. We rented a place in Parque das Nações, with easy access to bus and metro. But, the apartment wasn't great, and while we dearly love Lisbon, it is a lot to manage there. So we moved up north to Braga. Still no car, and we've found Braga is much easier for us to manage the day-to-day living than Lisbon was. Lisbon was basically a 16 month vacation for us, while Braga is more of a home. It makes a massive difference where you pick to live, though. Having easy access to transportation, healthcare, shopping, and fun stuff is really important. I've seen a few folks that fall in love with "quaint", then realize a trip to the doctors office can eat up the better part of the day.
Yes. We are a little outside of Lisbon so we need a car. Mainly for taking the kids to soccer and activities. I love the fact that where we live I can walk and get bread, groceries and fresh fish without a car. For me that’s become a must have. North America built all their subdivisions without any mixed use zoning. So you absolutely need a car over there. Such a mistake, and a barrier to quality of life. We hope to get up North soon. Glad you found a 🏠🤠
Fellow Canadian...from Orillia, Ontario to Obidos, Portugal...3 years since we left Canada. Hope you're enjoying the wild street parties in Lisbon AND if you can...June 23 is the big Festa de São João do Porto . The kids will love hitting everyone on the head with plastic hammers. A couple of our Canadian friends will be joining us this year. Look forward to watching your story unfold!
Haha. No wild parties for us. We live a little outside Lisbon. We will be visiting Obidos again in the next couple of weeks. A city inside a 🏰. We grew up in Ontario. Glad you are enjoying Portugal like us
Love this story!!
It takes a lot of gumption to move to a new place. Motivates me to push even harder for working on my independence from a job.
It does. Thanks for recognizing that and go after your dreams
I really love this journey! and i look forward to more!
Thanks so much, Sandy. We are adding a new one tonight
I'm moving to Bangkok!
That's awesome Marc. Goodbye 🇨🇦!
We moved from the Philippines to Portugal 3 months before COVID hit. We managed to buy an apartment during COVID and now are very happily settled
Awesome. That's a big move. Glad you are enjoying life in 🇵🇹
