Proper procedure for de-sooting the funnels when they were that bad would’ve been to dry-dock the ship, then send a crew down to clean by hand. Would’ve taken at least a month depending on the number of men involved. That’s why they need to clear it themselves every 24 hours.

It was the engineer officer who was to blame for not doing his job. However it was an offence to discharge soot as they did.
