I just got mine in the mail. I put it all together with the stock Merkur razor blade it came with and wow! What an incredible first shave! It was so such a nice first shave with it, I didn’t nick myself, I could feel a cooling sensation after the shave, and I didn’t even need after shave! I love this razor and I am glad I found the right product for me that suits me. The flawless German engineering in this two piece razor is fantastic. I'm doing my research on wet shaving (I was raised on disposable razors and barbasol) and just seeing how smooth and clean the first few strokes with a safety razor did - I'm sold. I'll see that on commercials, but all know there wasn't hair for those commercial shots to begin with. I'm still blown away how "dated" this technology is and the results it produces. Wowowow.
I'm shopping around to buy the finest safety razor possible for my kid brother this Christmas, so it's lovely having videos like yours to judge products with. I can't really tell jack shit from just pictures and sales blurbs on a website, and Reddit reviews aren't that much more informative. Thank you for a simple but EXTREMELY helpful service.
@@Pingaheimer Depends. If you need a relatively mild razor, a 2C should work. If you may need a more aggressive shave, a 6C has more choices. You can up the game with a 6S stainless steel razor at twice the price of a 6C! That is a razor that should be last one you'll ever need and will last generations to come.

Well, I just ordered the merkur38c and the muhleR89… and also ordered separately some feather razors, alum, and proraso shaving cream and after shave balm, along with a badger brush and bowl…all thanks to you lol
I put the 34G gold top cap on my Merkur Progress 510, and put the Opgress bronze knob on it. Now my chrome razor has gold accents…amazing looking and well functioning razor.
I use the Merkur 42C, i think it has the same head as the 34C. I used it with derby blades to do my head and face. Good combo that works for me with no cuts or irritation👍
I’m 34, and I’ve been using the plastic 1-2blade cheap 10 pack of the Gillette razors, with the cheap Barbasol spray can foam. I am now going to try using the safety razors thanks to your videos! When I was in culinary school we had to be clean shaven everyday, and I never could get a close shave, usually my chefs would not believe that I was clean shaven. I obviously had no clue what I was doing. But now I am actually learning the art of shaving and am pretty excited to order my new safety razor and setup. I’m am thinking of getting this razor, also looking at the muhleR89 or the R41… I have sensitive skin with moderate beard growth…any suggestions as far as piecing together my setup?

When I was at uni "a diesel" was a drink. Sometime called a "snakebite and black" - for our American cousins, that's half a pint of lager, half a pint of cider and a dash of blackcurrant cordial, all in a pint glass. Three of those and the evening became very interesting!
Thanks for that David. I'm a big fan of the English detective dramas- Endeavor, The Tunnel, etc. and they often enjoy a pint after work and even at lunch time which kind of surprised me. Now you got me wanting to come over to a pub across the pond and partake in one of those Diesel drinks!
Can you get the same close shave with the 34c as you would with the Futur or the Progress? I have some spots that the 34c doesn’t get through easily and have to do multiple passes. Tried r41 and that one did an amazing job in the first pass but was too aggressive for subsequent passes. I’m thinking an adjustable might be the solution for me?
@@geofatboy - I find that going WTG, XTG only around the upper lip & chin, then ATG is best for me! I am basically going WTG and then ATG with a XTG around the chin, mouth and a little around the Adam's Apple and good to go! Might also do some touch-ups ATG at the end, but I find that when I used to do full 3 passes that it didn't work as good for me! Face gets a little raw doing full 3 -passes on my face, but everybody's face is different so!
You make it look just so easy shaving with a feather blade. I would had made a blood bath. I can go wtg with feather. Not xtg and less atg. Kudos to you. 👍🏻

I have sensitive skin and usually had skin irritation in the neck area, waiting to see if these rumors are true and I can get rid of this razor burn/irritation using a safety razor. I will update soon.....
@@Long-Ball-Larry actually, it worked better than those disposable razors. But the irritation continued until i achieved to test several different blades. Now, i use astra green with merkur 34c, and almost without irritation....but i can relate it also to the improvement of my technique, and applying very light pressure on the skin.

I’ve noticed since shaving with an safety razor in baby smooth but the hairs grow back faster lol but safety razors are the best shave you can get in my opinion along with a straight razor also the razor bumps are pretty much gone

Nice! Another name to add to my collection! Depends on how much work it needs. There are tons of vids on line about razor restoration. Remove any rust, polish it up with some good metal polish like Flitz. You can clean up and replace and re-pin the scales as well. Hone it up. Fun project!
IMO the 34HD is not a mild razor, its mid to wild and this video clearly shows that... if it was a mild razor it would not be able to mow down that heavy beard in the first pass...

I got interested in safety razors and feel like shaving regular now and i don't understand the terminology like mild moderate or very aggressive.. what does all this mean and how do I know what's good for me that will last atleast few years
A mild razor is forgiving. It offers a mild shave and is easy to use. An aggressive razor removes hair very efficiently and with improper technique you can cut yourself easily. Just buy a Merkur 34C. It is a mild razor and I have never cut or nicked myself with mine. The 34C is a very high quality razor that will last you a lifetime. Just get one--you cannot go wrong.
How the hell do you not get ingrown hairs - every time I shave it happens. I bought the same razor gonna see if that helps but I shave with the grain and I still get them really bad

Who likes their Badger brushes better stock up. After a PETA investigation and horrific report on captive badgers in China and Eastern Europe, there are a few specialist shaving supply shops now refusing to re stock badger hair brushes. Manufacturers will follow soon.

You just have to Google You Tube badger captivity shaving brush industry and it will put you off for life. Hey i have no problem how it was 50-60-70 years ago with hunting wildlife etc. But captive badgers, caged in appalling, cruel and painful conditions? Nah.
I swear I've watched you shave more times than I've actually shaved myself at this point.

I have both the 41 and the 89. Usually using astra green blades. Would definitely go for the 89 with sensitive skin.

I've been using my cutthroats exclusively recently, but after watching this I might have to dig my merkur 23c out for my next shave!

Sure you can. It will likely take some extra rinsing though.
Not me, I started with the Assured butterfly from Dollar Tree and with the Merkur 25c and the Merkur 39c.. the 25c proved to be defective alas.

I have Mercur 11c and it is almost identical to 34c. I also have a 37c and it needs a little tame. All these razors shave well.

Who likes their Badger brushes better stock up. After a PETA investigation and horrific report on captive badgers in China and Eastern Europe, there are a few specialist shaving supply shops now refusing to re stock badger hair brushes. Manufacturers will follow soon.
That is why I use synthetic, don't want to invest in this brutality. These chinese have no heart

You just have to Google You Tube badger captivity shaving brush industry and it will put you off for life.
