I've said this before about your AARs , but I will say it again ! they are simple outstanding and fantastic to watch. Without a doubt you sir are the god of combat mission AARs no one comes even close to the work and effort you put into these great works of entertainment . I if I had my way would give you prime time TV spot to show you work off. As has been said in the comments below this is more fun than actually playing the game , just pure WW2 porn ! . I take my hat off to you Josey and as you can tell I'm a big big fan . Thank you for the time and effort you put into these they must take an age to produce. Your a STAR.
Gotta love this post. It makes me very happy to hear how much you enjoy these AAR's. It does take quite a bit of time and effort to put them together but when I receive posts like yours it makes it all worth while. WW2 porn eh? I like it! Keep an eye out for part 2!
Great video as always! British Airborne are some of the best troops to fight in urban terrain. With the amount of SMGs they have, they are deadly at short distances. Although I have found they run out of ammo fairly quickly in a prolonged firefight. And it's nice to see the PIAT saving the day once again. Keep them comming Josey!
Absolutly awesome Josey. Great story telling and I really enjoyed the infantry heavy focus. Beautiful editing, narrating and great close ups make this your best vid yet!
Excellent video as always Josey. Interesting scenario. As a point of historic interest did Bren guns function in UK squads the way BARs did for US troops or were they intended to be something more like a true LMG? I see that they are usually referred to as LMGs but when I see them in use they seem more like a precision automatic weapon than an MG. 22:00 was the wrong point in the battle to be carrying a bolt action rifle. I look forward to getting another Bushmills and starting part two. Again very well done.
Thanks Mark. I'm not a historian but from what I've seen of the US infantry squad and British infantry section from this era, they seem to follow a similar protocol with the BAR and Bren having a similar role within the squad/section which was to provide accurate suppressive fire so as to facilitate manoeuvre by the manoeuvre element at the squad/section level. This becomes apparent when you look at the guiding principal of the German rifle squad where the entire squad's purpose was to support the operation of the MG34 or MG42 which was about volume of fire but was less accurate. As to which protocol is more effective is still a debate which rages today.
Played a very interesting quick game on this map, although it was a meeting engagement. US vs. Germany. My advance-to line was roughly similar to yours, albeit a bit further back. Secured KT1 and 3, got kinda bogged down in KT2. Ran a bit of an experiment with my armor, two sets of two Stuarts matched with a Hellcat. Hope was that the Stuarts would act as scouts and infantry support, while the Hellcats held just a bit back. If German armor would be spotted the Stuarts would act to draw attention while the Hellcat made its move. As it turned out, my Hellcat on the church side would score a PZIV within about 45 seconds of the battles start, then another only a few minutes later. More surprisingly, that second kill it may not have been needed, my Stuart was such a quick shot he put a 37mm through the front plate of the Panzer before it could react. Battle eventually ended as a minor victory in my favor, neither the Stuarts nor the Hellcats could easily support offensives into the German forces, as my opponent took several high experience Panzershrek teams that proved difficult to deal with.
mkeogh whilst I do agree with your logic, I do not know how experienced Pericles is and cannot know how he read the situation. I think it better ask him yourself, he will have his own AAR of this battle out soon. To speculate, it may just be down to impatience, it may also be down to forgetting the main tenet of Fire and Manouevre or it may be down to a threat he perceived elsewhere and was trying to get his troops out of a particular building. There are 2 points in this game where I rush troops forward without proper fire superiority to get out of the line of fire of Stugs, both of which are in part 2. The first time it works in my favour and I end up overrunning one of the objectives. The 2nd time I misjudge it, take lots of casualties and lose an objective. We all make mistakes playing CM, the difference is that mine and my opponents are laid bare for all to see. I have huge respect for anyone who agrees to be my opponent, even more so if they are inexperienced..
Hello I’m new to your, channel but I really like the combat mission videos you put out. I just want to say keep it up and I’m looking forward to more videos in the future.
You could argue in that the 5 points and the area immediately West of it are a 4th KT in that it would provide a base of fire from which you could consolidate and advance further North, but I think taking it and holding it would be tough. (I'm saying this without having watched any further than 5:18 as of yet)
I'm not sure where you mean, I am advancing towards the East and the Germans are advancing towards the West. North is the left flank and South is the right flank.
First off, I love your youtube name! Can't count how many times I've watched Clint's finest work. This AAR is superb! I am immensely grateful for the work and time you put into this production for our benefit. I've gotten that CM itch again and this video intensified the need to start playing again. Looking to get back into the old stomping grounds at CM clubs. May I ask what software you used to produce this video. I've written AARs in the the past, but to date myself, that was way back when CM1 was at its pinnacle and the youtubes wasn't in such style. Thanks again!
Ha - 'You gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?' Thanks a lot, this AAR does seem to be one of my more popular ones. I am glad you and others enjoyed it. I use the paid for version of Fraps for recording and Windows Movie Maker for editing. All the 'artwork' (ahem!) is done in paint. So really basic, I like to keep it simple. May see you over at one of the forums.
Thanks for info. Once I have my legs under me again, I may attempt such an AAR! I just signed back up at Few Good Men. It be my pleasure to have a game with you.
Thanks. Yes I was aware of this during the editing. It's a new microphone that I was initially saturating with certain words, so I moved it further away to stop this and as a result the narration is a bit quiet. I turned down the video volume as much as possible to compensate but hopefully I can figure it out for the next vid.
Very well presented. Once you have achieved objectives and can adopt a defensive posture I think you have the upper hand. I can almost scents the frustration of your opponent :)
Thanks and yes, you have a 'Command Phase' where you issue orders and a 'Replay Phase' where you watch 60 seconds of action. During those 60 seconds you cannot change anything, you just have to watch what's happening until the turn is played out. You can watch the replay as many times as you want, then when you're done you go back into the Command Phase and re-issue/change orders as you need to.
I use all of Aris' vehicle mods and some face mods. I have all settings on 'Best' as I've got a pretty decent rig. But no, I don't use any post processing.
So I've been meaning to ask for a while but just remembered. How do you record you videos, do you just record as you play and cut it down to size later on or do you save every replay and then record clips from that. Been meaning to imitate some of your style and was just wondering how you do it.
Every replay file is saved and I usually start recording footage after the battle has completed so I have an idea of a narrative. In multiplayer games the replay files save automatically. In single player games I have to manually save each file. I have a spreadsheet on which I record the events of each turn as I save the replay file so that I know what to look for when recording. Hope that helps, I look forward to seeing something in the future.
Thanks for the quick response, figured I would do something for platoon patrol, that really small scenario in BN to get it started and get a feel for the editing. Plus It take about an hour to play to completion which is nice. Just a few more question if your willing. How do you scale the editing time to the video, say like a number of clips per minute or just until it feels right? And what do you use to record the audio for the narrative, I've only ever done live screen caps and I'd like to avoid the quality loss from processing a video just to remove the audio?
A small scenario sounds like a good place to start. Recording and editing in this way is a long process. Each of my clips tend to average 3 seconds so I suppose that ends up around the 20 clips per minute mark but its dependent on the situation and I don't set a rule as to how many clips per minute I should be aiming for. Capturing the movement of large formations across open terrain could warrant a 7 second clip, whereas detailing a firefight between 2 opposing pixeltruppen could better be communicated with half second clips of each combatant firing at the other. Its about telling a story and sometimes you want to up the tempo and sometimes you have to bring it back down again. The narrative audio is recorded in Movie Maker which I use to edit the entire movie. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions, I enjoy talking about my hobby.
Good advice about the tempo, I already have a few mental images of how I want the video to look from a small shot perspective. One thing I did have trouble when doing a mock recording with was, How do you deal with hedges since the troops on either side are blocked from line of sight unless you sit above the hedge? I had a hard time finding a shot which showed both troops in interesting positions though I suppose a side shot of the shooters followed by (a replay of the) impact on target could work well.
“As they enter the smoke filled block, all hell breaks loose”
lol that was some nice close quarters combat footage.
I can’t stop saying “it’s Josey Wales here” love the intro and videos thanks
Hello, Josey Wales here...
Ha, thanks man!

Keep an eye out for part 2!
PanzerPajamas is pretty good too
I love watching this, its like watching a really good history show. Thank you so much Josey, for all your hard work.
Thanks man, comments like this make the effort worth while.

Thanks, I agree, in the second part of the game quite a few units start to run out of ammo and are down to pistols and grenades.
Absolutly awesome Josey. Great story telling and I really enjoyed the infantry heavy focus. Beautiful editing, narrating and great close ups make this your best vid yet!
Nice one Michael, I'm glad you think this is the best yet. Hopefully Part 2 will be up to standard as well.
Quality AAR and video. Really enjoyed this - it's renewed my interest playing CMBN again so i thank you sir.
Glad you liked it and has prompted you to get back into CMBN. H2H is the way to go.

Fantastic presentation of a WWII battle as always Josey Wales. Congrats. Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks Dart, glad you enjoyed it.
that mad rush at 21:00 .... war is hell, baby!
Yep, we've all done it!

And thanks to you sir.
Roll on Part 2
Hello I’m new to your, channel but I really like the combat mission videos you put out. I just want to say keep it up and I’m looking forward to more videos in the future.
Welcome and thanks, glad you're enjoying these AAR's.
I enjoy these videos more than playing the actual game
Ha nice one!
These videos are really well done..keep it up!
Thank you will do, part 2 is imminent!
I love these videos dude!
Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoy them.

AWESOME video keep it up
Thanks Lammert, will do.

Up for a game at somepoint in the future but I am pretty busy at the moment with existing commitments, thanks.
Once again great job!!
Cheers Dave, once I've got part two edited we can setup a game.
Great video and good shot on the STUG! LMK if you ever want a game. I am Nemesis over at The Few Good Men.
Thanks Nemesis. Yep it's a great feeling taking out enemy armour with AT weapons.
Great video! You're audio is very quiet though..?
Thanks. Yes I was aware of this during the editing. Still, a fantastic battle! Perhaps your bloodiest yet! Can't wait for the next instalment.
A problem that often gets pointed out to me as well; for what its worth you were wholly audible with my headset.
this was great
Many thanks Jason
Josey, which icon mod are you using? Edit: I love the style you present your AAR's in, keep up the great work.
Thank you purpheart, it's Cat's Tactical Icons found here;

Thank you. All will be revealed soon in part 2.
Wow cliff hanger
Always keep them wanting more!
good stuff as per usual.
Is WeGo the turn based mode ? I forgot ^^
Thanks and yes, you have a 'Command Phase' where you issue orders and a 'Replay Phase' where you watch 60 seconds of action. yeah it's been a while since I played a Combat Mission Module :D
Rushing squads in the open and putting armored vehicles within PIAT range... it doesn't seem like your opponent is too skilled!
Well we've all got to start somewhere.
Yes, which is why you and I should probably do a match one of these days. :P
If you're up for it in a month or so give me a shout. I have quite a few requests for games that I am steadily working through.
Great! Let's hope I'm free by then.
Is this one of the Osterbeek maps? In Market Garden?
I believe so yes.
Are you using reshade because it looks so better than my game? :)
I use all of Aris' vehicle mods and some face mods. I have all settings on 'Best' as I've got a pretty decent rig. But no, I don't use any post processing.
Ah Ok, thank you for your answer!
22:22 war crime?
No he was still armed.

I think I would go for the shots you outlined in your last sentence. I would separate out the shots between firer and impact.
Hey mate, are you using a mod when it comes to the NATO symbols?
Yes, I’m trying to recall it’s name but I think it’s something like Cats Tactical Symbols.
