I like thin body tenors. I have the Nova concert and tenor. Happy with both. They both have a sweet sound with the tenor being somewhat deeper. Sound wise they are different enough to keep both. Enyas of all models have a pleasant sound. The tenor having metal frets does make string choices easier and having the wider neck over the concert is a bonus. Plus the frets are easier to see in dimmer light over the dark frets on the concert. My understanding is that Enya changed the composition of the concert plastic to make the frets on the concert and soprano less prone to wear. No issues. Similarly the Flight ukuleles with plastic frets have been durable. One nice thing is that in your reviews you play simpler songs that make it easier to focus in and to appreciate the quality of the instrument over the skill of the player.
Hi Jeff! I wanted to kindly ask you a suggestion, I’ve already an Enya concert and I love it (the AcousticPlus system is really good!) and I was thinking to bring also a tenor and use a low G string, do you think it’s ok? Do I risk to have a clone or the difference is quite enough? Thanks and have good music! :D
@@michelescotti44 Hi Michele There is quite a sound difference between the tenor and concert plus the benefit of a wider neck and metal frets make it worthwhile to have both. I put a low G on my tenor to take advantage of the larger body size and metal frets with positive results. Recommended.
@@jeffwatson4908 thanks for the kind reply! The only thing that I don’t like so much on the concert size it’s the moulded frets but if you think the metal ones are a good improvement it’s super fine!
@@michelescotti44 they are. Very smooth fret ends too. No fret sprout issues. Having the ability to add low G really differentiates it from the Concert. One other advantage is that the frets being of metal makes them visible in lower light. A nuisance I found with the concert and mini, especially the mini. Some people have all 3- Nova Pro, concert and mini. Makes nice wall art. 😊
I LOVE this model! I do like the metal frets since I can use my favorite Aquila red strings ❤ As for durability, it’s great for the hot, humid southern US.
So glad you are happy with yours too, they really are a nice instrument and as you say, excellent for durability. Yes, I'm planning on putting the low G on VERY soon.
I was already convinced to buy one, that would be my first tenor. I often bring a ukulele on travels, and I find my soprano Waterman a little small for my hands. Now that I watched your review, more convinced than ever, I can’t wait! And since there is no orange in the tenor line, it’ll be a purple like yours. Thank you for the review, cheers!
Good choice and very glad to be helping. It is a shame about less colours, it would be very cool in orange too but the pruple / lilac colour is beautiful.
Hi Rachel, we are ukulele twins now! 😆 I have the electro version of this model and love it for similar reasons to you: colour, feel, finish, etc. Just wanna say thanks for all of your fab videos xx
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and just ordered this in the Enya black. Can't wait to get it! Thanks for sharing all that you do on your channel! Blessings to you!
I absolutely love my Enya concert cherry blossom and I've always been a fan of the new lightweight Enya's, particularly in the purple colour and it would be great to get one when I can start playing again. x
@@UkuleleWales Thanks Rachel. When I saw it in my favorite color I had to have it ! I brought it to my first ukulele jam last week. I loved it. They meet every Friday 🙂💕
I've got the greatest respect for Enya ukes, I have the round hpl uke that everyone went mad for a few summers ago, and also a hpl baritone which is one of my favourite sounding ukes, like there flower ukes too and there deep blue colours....ahh there's so many lovely ukes In the world I need bigger bedroom walls lol😂 Another thing about Enya they really pull out all the stops with the added extras. Great review xxx...let's wish for snow 😆
Hi! Great review, great uke - congratulations. 😊 BTW. I've been playing it from August, too :) and I have replaced original strings with fluorocarbons for two reasons: 1) fluoros have much longer sustains, sound much more clear and perfectly fit this uke (that is quite dark sounding and bright strings compensate this), 2) I used titaniums in my guitar and they are very sensitive to humidity and temperature changes - when you play outdoor your instrument needs endless tuning corrections (almost every song, just torture 😁). Best regards!
Hi Michal, that is so cool to hear!! I'm planning on putting a low G on very soon (just want to do a comparison with all 3) before I swap the strings but I may well try the fluorocarbons too, sounds like great advice!
Word of warning from people who are watching this and thinking of getting one. I've had 2 in the last two weeks which didnt charge properly. The last one their support asked me to unscrew the electrics and "remove wires and re-insert them". On doing so, I saw just how dodgy the circuit boards are in these things. Held together with glue, and from what i can see the battery looks glued in too - good luck replacing it. After getting 2 broken ones in a row, i'm not going to trust them a 3rd time.. Too worried about getting one and it lasting a few months/etc.
Sorry to hear you have had trouble with yours. Mine is not electric one as my intention was always to use it out doors and not have to worry about it. Did you buy it from a uke shop? I bought mine from Southern Ukulele Store and they are always very thorough with their checks.
Nice short review Rachel really enjoyed it and I must agree quite a nice sounding instrument I am pleasantly surprised for a plastic ukulele and it just goes so show never judge a book by it's cover. Great job
Glad you enjoyed it Peter, Thanks. Yes, I have other plastic ukes that don't sound this good! It doesn't sound like wood obviously but I do think the sound is different but really nice.
I've got the soprano and concert wish I'd got this one. Just watched Matt at world of ukes, he's got them too and then you popped up. I'll have to convince the Wife we need one😂
Hi Rachel. Always enjoy your playing! Was wondering what you think of the sound of the body - compared to wood - when doing simple percussive playing. If you tap, slap, or use your thumb on the bridge does it sound okay? I've been wanting to add these skills and am looking at a uke upgrade too. I've been looking closely at that Enya Tenor in Black, but have been hesitant, not knowing if I would find any limitations due to the sound of the plastic. Haven't been able to find any information online regarding the body sound of this instrument. It seems most percussive players use wood. Any advice or insight would be helpful. Also, can't wait to hear it with the low G!
Great question! I have noticed that it does sound “plasticky” when you tap your fingers on the body but I haven’t actually done this with a purpose or tried tapping, slapping etc. elsewhere on them. I am hoping to do a comparison f the 3 Enyas soon, I’ll try and remember to mention it. 👍
I haven’t actually got around to putting the low G on yet but will make a video when I do. This uke has a slotted bridge so the string slots in and holds with a small knot if that helps. 👍
