Growing up in Ireland in the 90's me and my friends had absolutely no exposure to skateboarding until THPS. It's because of that game we all got into it and over 20 years later some of us still do it. Just a perspective from across the pond.
The Tony Hawk games didn't get me into skating, I was already in. They didn't get me into video games, I was already in. The games didn't teach me anything about skating or video games. I've played them for the same reason I ride boards, it's fun. My favorite was Tony Hawk's Underground for GameCube, because I could make myself and my friends into my characters.
I remember getting that game for like my 12th birthday and then being locked in lol… I grew up on a dirt road so me and the boys would carry our boards and shoes like a kilometre to skate on the 2 lane highway lol
Skater from NZ here, low access to vids/mags at the time. THPS helped my teenage self discover possibilities of skating, flips I didn't know existed like Impossible, and figuring out or trying things I did in the game
YO congrats on 1M subs!! I've been watching since your first Progress Daily drop + I still have the shirt! Thanks for all the positivity and inspiration over the years. Keep killin' it!!
As an older guy 46 from Australia I love seeing where skateboarding is now. I started skateboarding in the late 80's when transition was in full bloom. Up until the last 5-10 years I was thinking I was never going to see bowls being built ever again. Now they are being built everywhere and I couldn't be more stoked to see that happening and the new generations ripping them and some of us old guys still having a go. Also remember when THPS game came out and thinking this is going to do so much good for skateboarding. I don't think I've ever seen skateboarding stronger than it is now especially on a worldwide scale and especially transition skating since the 80's. Also I'm new to your channel and I really thought I was going to dislike you when I saw the thumbnail. 🤣 I find it a bit weird how some skateboarders think skateboarding should have never have grown or expanded or evolved from what it was 30-40 years ago. When they started skateboarding it had probably already evolved from just doing spins and rolling handstands in competitions to skating pools and bowls. I love seeing the stuff skaters are doing these days. And yep combo's were being done well before Tony Hawk's game came out even on transition in the late 80's so those dudes don't know what they're talking about.
been enjoying this style of videos. skating and talking about interesting topics while tying everything back to the main purpose which is learning and having fun. keep killing it
Finally figured out how to add the THPS (special bam) sound effect and picture of “Kiss the Rail” in my latest Soap edit! Tony Hawk definitely got me more into skating in the late 90’s and early 2000’s when I was in HS. I was already skating and playing games like Skate or Die and Street Sk8er
Love this video! And we definitely miss you too John! I got to skate with Tony when I was younger at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach and just seeing what he could do at a young age inspired me but to be honest everyone that I skate with including you inspires me even at 47. I skate for me but also to inspire others.
Idk about anyone else in here but sport based video games used to just make me want to do better or strive to become really good in real life. I’m into so many sports thanks to these games and I fell in love with skateboarding thanks to Pro Skater 2 on my game boy color I must of been 3 lmao. It may just be my competitive spirit as well.
Im happy that yk about how other countries have their own skate scene. In brasil theres pros and brands people have never heard about. Any skate gear from America is super expensive so brazilians will jus buy brands from brasil because 1 its cheaper 2 theyre supporting their community. Thank you for letting people know about how there are unheard skate scenes out of America
I love these type of videos I feel like your wisdom is soothing to listen too plus I love skateboarding so it’s a win win for me I’d love to be able to sit down one day an ask every question I have
DBC..DAILY Blessings Coming!.. Thank You John Hill for Everything, Everyday!! ... I Wish my Skateboarding Life would've been different, but I Believe Everything happens for a reason and I'm Thankful Everyday! I still often Skate for fun... for Peace.
Couple of real bad slams and my body is wrecked. I still skate but I’m stiff and older and it hurts to jump down shit. I fucking love thps. It’s a good outlet for people that love skating that just can’t get down like that anymore
Bro. John. My man. Who cares what other people think for real. As long as you having fun and enjoying it , keep doing you. I used to get made fun of for wearing tie dye dragonball z t shirts when I was in elementary school. I was born 1989 . And look at dbz now it's every where . I just stopped caring what people thought of me or what I did or enjoyed. Sucked I had to learn so young. But love you vids. Much love from alaska
The way Tony Hawk ruined skateboarding is that it set unrealistic expectations and many skate parks from that era you would need a cheat code to ride but probably looked cool on the computer aided drafts of the day.
You realize Tony Hawk was already well known and established years prior to the video game right? Go back and watch a rerun of Saved By The Bell. A show that actually came out in the late 80's although most people call it a 90's show. Kelly Kapowski had a Tony Hawk poster in her bedroom from a 1990 episode of the show. The game has nothing to do with skateboarding being ruined. Also the movie Kids that came out in 1995 had a whole skateboarding scene. Skateboarding games already existed as far back as the Commodore 64, Nintendo NES and Arcade with 720. Skate Or Die was also a big videogame in the 80's and Nike even made a SB Dunk sneaker of the game. I know, I own a pair. You saying this is like saying Tech Deck ruined Fingerboarding because they are cheap and plastic compared to companies like BlackRiver, Flatface, Dynamics, Goo, Chems, DoH etc.
Skating in my area was definitely ruined by tony hawk. Everyone stopped skating and started playing the game all day everyday. Some never made it back. There's no pelican in Boston either. Ever. Also when is negativity going to stop trending? Nothing can ruin skating for those who have ahold of the stoke. -old head
I think the issue with Pro Skater's depiction of skateboarding, outside of breaking the laws of physics, is the inconsistent and unexplained timer system. By the time of 3 or 4, it just became normal to manual or grind between props to just not engage with the timer at all. The game needed some way to decide when a set starts and ends, and it seems Neversoft didn't want to force players to call their own sets, so just having a combo meter and timer is a rather elegant and arcadey solution to that problem, but it kind of set outsider's expectations that there should be no downtime between tricks at all.
HI ALL JERRY IV missed ya im a newcomer grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr YOUR BETTER THAN TONY were's his youtube ? right man JOHN your a man of the people and no this isn't his dad lol my opinion lol anyway tony WHO lol iv learnt more about skating form you so there thanks for all my bad choices lol kidding

same here, it's the one thing that actually got me to start skating!
The Tony Hawk games didn't get me into skating, I was already in. They didn't get me into video games, I was already in. The games didn't teach me anything about skating or video games. That's our home park. It's small with no bowl, pool, or pump track, but it's fun with variety.
0:11 headphones sound perfect for this park

6:30 i skate my local parks half like that. Used to play skate just up and off like in a line. Super fun

Him and dale decker have always killed this format, real skating paired with real thoughts from some real dudes!
You, milky, and garret got me back into skating after stopping for almost 8 years and I’m so glad I started back up
Do you not see the irony of this title of you video. some people would say UA-cam "skaters" ruined skateboarding. But hey... anything for views right.

@Dm-Real_JohnHill-Nicegram aye for real??
You clickbaited me with this headline lol
You motivated me to get back into skating
Imagine skating 20 years and then the game comes out. I think it kept me interested for 20 more years. Of course your's and others' vlogs too.
THPS2 is part of one of my best childhood memories
I really needed this video thank you 🙏
Excellent video, I was transfixed all the way through , the format was perfect , do more like this , peace ✌️
Hfc john, that dialogue at the end
Combos are sick
Playing outside with your friends is the best way to describe skating. Many skaters I meet are just kid mentality in bigger body's hah.
Thps4 is the goat
Can't let the bullies change you. You be you and love it.
Tony Hawk didn't combining the tricks into a great combo of switching different combinations of grinding and manual, flip tricks, and etc.
Who else can hear the “ch-ch” sound every time he did a combo?
Skating Farmer Branch park I see. I miss skating here.
Appreciate you man
when you love something you truly don't care what others think
great video once again!
How you finish the video 60s after he posted it
@@Tigie03 i am speed
I used to try to make my tricks look perfect, like a nollie halfcab flip or kickflip crook down a set.
There's no such thing as 'Nollie halfcab'.
Super random, but howre you and Dale?
The chemistry was A1
Thanks to California you got Peachy. :)
I felt the stong "FUCK!" In my soul.
Dude you’re a beast
Why nose blunt slide are so rare in this days? 20yrs ago we are hype of them
This was a really good video.
Why would someone try to give a hard time for linking tricks ? Its harder to do and more impressive, not to mention makes your multiplier go up
I disagree with the title. There is no other way. Except there could be a different name on it, 'How Rodney Mullen Games "Ruined" Skateboarding'.
titles been so negative fr
The way Tony Hawk ruined skateboarding is that it set unrealistic expectations and many skate parks from that era you would need a cheat code to ride but probably looked cool on the computer aided drafts of the day.
love your skating!

The game made everyone think skateboarding is easy :')
Elit tony hawks pro skater ruined anything it was my summer of skating when this game came out because I spent all summer in doors playing it 😂

You get a dislike from me for a deceptive and misleading video title.
Tony Hawk the face of skateboarding like Bruce Lee of martial arts or Albert Einstein of science 😎 😎 😎
Nice vid
Hi
Haven’t even watched the viddy yet, and no way… tony hawk totally changed the game. Sorry but I disagree
I’m first, what’s good!
