When I consider levelling, I consider the following:
    1. Have the characters used most of their class features they gained since the last level up? Have they used their new spells or abilities?
    2. Has each character gotten a chance to "shine" since their last level up? Not every character gets the spotlight every session, so I want to make sure they all get that chance before gaining additional abilities.
    3. Does it make sense story-wise? Why have they gained these new abilities and powers? Sometimes, there isn't a great narrative reason, but if there can be, I think it enriches the story.
    4. Finally, I think about how many sessions they've been at their current level. A general guideline I follow is them playing a number of four-hour sessions at a level equal to that level. For example, one session for Level 1, two sessions for Level 2, and so on. Levelling too fast can end up limiting the monsters and challenges I can present them with.

32:45 I have been practicing using the Book of Many Things to help with my improv skills. The extra book to prime ideas is an incredible tool, but I can even base the result on the picture alone.

About sessions per level, there is actually a written "rule" (more like a guidance) in the Dungeon Master's Guide.
Chapter 8, pg. 261 - Session Based Advancement.
It's a session per level until 3rd level, then around 2 or 3 sessions per level. Like Mike said.
The 5th edition DMG has a lot of good tips.

My party are now at L5 after 9 months of weekly games. I've homebrewed XP so that they only get it for exploration and achieving quest goals.
The great benefit is how good they get at playing their characters.

Dang I thought you were going to be advising not to spend on what I don't need rather than pointing me towards more of it!

Have you seen Kickstarter by Elowen frost? She has One that ends on the 15th or 16th April , and with the current one you have a great opportunity to put on add-ons for her previous two kickstarters. The monsters and myth book is amazing, she does all the writing all the artwork, pretty much everything for her books and they're awesome

You keep driving home the point about digital tools going away. Made me laugh a little when I read about Ubisoft removing a game from their digital platform that people paid money for, and now, as far as I am aware, can not access any longer. Just shows what a valid point you make, and may turn me into a data hoarder after all :)
Really appreciate your insights. They come across as well thought through, and provide a lot of value to me. Thank you for that.
€: Oh, and kudos to you for putting your money where your mouth is with providing ways to save your tools!

Speaking of magic pencils, I used to be a Ticonderoga man until I got a Blackwing Pearl. They have them at Blick.

One thing to remember is that if the monsters do magic non targetable damage, having to hit 19 to hit means nothing at all, and those tanky characters become squishy

To get to level 2 should have 2 dangerous encounters. Then to get to level 3 they should have 3 dangerous encounters. 4 for 4. And so on. That works for me, usually.

Don't write in the book! You want the book to last so that you don't have to buy another one for another $40-50. And what if you only have the pdf? Instead, use post-its and flags in a hard-copy book and make a campaign journal.
