When I was in high school I could play all of Hetfield's rhythm guitar parts for the first 5 albums. I never got a handle on Kirk's solos. Don't remember more than bits and pieces now...Especially with no electric guitar for many years. The acoustic tracks like Fade to Black are beautiful.
I graduated from Benedictine College, had a professor who was also a big Metallica fan - he'd put fill in the blank lyrics for no credit on quizzes, I'm fairly sure I'm one of the only students who could get them every time. Metallica & the music has actually helped me overcome grief in the past as well as James being a huge inspiration for me to overcome sinful habits and to never give up even when relapses happen. Why is Thomas Aquinas so sexist? He calls women “ defective and misbegotten” and describes lust as “ the 8 daughters of lust” Why? Why not the 8 sons of lust? The only good thing I ever heard that he said about women is that Marriage is the greatest of friendships. I guess you could say that about man’s best friend too (dog) so I’m not giving him too many points for that either!

Kind of. The self love that comes from pride. The one that does not allow us to accept our faults and reconcile with God after we fall. The self -love that leads us into shock when we sin. This is best defined by Saint Francis De Sales in the book How to Profit to one's faults.

A good solid rule about literature is that it must lead somehow to virtue, and away from vice; as all of sacred literature leads to hatred of God due to how they depict Him- none of it is even remotely ever going to be acceptable; in part due to the mindset of the cultures that those came out of... this's *especially* true regarding the need to permanently reject all of sacred writing as a doorway for the devil into one's life (which it is!)... now, things like "Harry Potter" or "Percy Jackson" those're ethically permissible, fully and completely, as John Paul 2 confirmed in his own readthrough of "Harry Potter"... so it is completely acceptable in and of itself. Lord of the Rings and Narnia are somewhat less acceptable, due to the world-view they came out of; especially as they're said to be truly Christian in their nature- but they are acceptable in and of themselves- due to the effects they cause in the individual. In general, the rule to mind about literature is if it is not overtly pornographic (intended to trigger a sexual reaction on the part of the person who views/reads it), or satanic, it is acceptable- and there're very few things as novels go that fit into *those* categories. But one thing I'd forever boycott is Marxist literature; nothing but nothing exceeded or even came anywhere near close to matching them in terms of antihuman conduct! That has the caviat of if I am not studying what is wrong with it, of course.
About 12 minutes 13 in matt references two ends to the sexual act being a John Paul the 2nd invention. The objection as I understand it is the elevation of the secondary end to equal primacy the "two fold" end to marriage. That is a modernist invention. St Thomas doesn't seem to be arguing for an equal primacy of the secondary end, just that it is one of the ends. I'll refer you to the 1917 pio-benedictine code of cannon law in which states "§ 1. The primary end of marriage is the procreation and education of children; the secondary [end] is mutual support and a remedy for concupiscence" (Canon 565) (Just a quick search away) This predates the equal primacy of unity and procreation. We don't have to take this errant interpretation of humanae vitae as an infallible teaching as it flies in the face of the traditional teaching as opposed to defining something that's unclarified. Also the flowing from a letter to confused Catholics. "The question is raised in the same way regarding marriage. Marriage had always been defined by its first aim which was procreation and its secondary aim which was married love. Now, at the Council they sought to alter this definition and say there was no longer a primary aim but that the two aims of which I speak were equivalent. It was Cardinal Suenens who proposed this change and I still remember Cardinal Brown, the Master General of the Dominicans getting up to say "Caveatis, caveatis, (Beware, beware!) Ifwe accept this definition we go against all the tradition of the Church and we pervert the meaning of marriage. We do not have the right to modify the Church's traditional definitions. "
Is Thomas Aquinas the first catholic saint to support neo-platonic "free will"? The first Christian writers I can find that support this are Tatian and Tertullian but they are not saints, and the only theologian to emphasize it was Pelagius, who was condemned as a heretic at the Council of Carthage: (Carthage Canon CXI) "Likewise it seemed good, that whoever should say that the grace of God, by which a man is justified through Jesus Christ our Lord, avails only for the remission of past sins, and not for assistance against committing sins in the future, let him be anathema." (Carthage Canon CXII) "Also, whoever shall say that the same grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord helps us only in not sinning by revealing to us and opening to our understanding the commandments, so that we may know what to seek, what we ought to avoid, and also that we should love to do so, but that through it we are not helped so that we are able to do what we know we should do, let him be anathema. For when the Apostle says: _Wisdom puffs up, but charity edifies it_ were truly infamous were we to believe that we have the grace of Christ for that which puffs us up, but have it not for that which edifies, since in each case it is the gift of God, both to know what we ought to do, and to love to do it; so that wisdom cannot puff us up while charity is edifying us. For as of God it is written, _Who teaches man knowledge,_ so also it is written, _Love is of God."_ (Carthage Canon CXIII) "It seemed good that whosoever should say that the grace of justification was given to us only that we might be able more readily by grace to perform what we were ordered to do through our free will; as if though grace was not given, although not easily, yet nevertheless we could even without grace fulfil the divine commandments, let him be anathema. For the Lord spoke concerning the fruits of the commandments, when he said: _Without me you can do nothing,_ and not _Without me you could do it but with difficulty."_

Well, Aquinas clearly has it wrong; hatred of God comes not out of lust, nor pride, as Peter the Apostle and first pope claimed inaccurately, but out of how God is portrayed in the sacred texts- for He is portrayed therein as a monster to be eliminated merely for being a monarch... so it is fear of the lord, even awe of God that teaches man to hate God in and of itself. I for one forever opposed lust, and would never tolerate it at all; but hatred of God came out of humbling myself before Him- for pretty soon humbling myself made Him into something that would destroy me just as soon as look at me- and has no good intents at all... that's the fruit of Him being a spirit to begin with, for no spirit is capable of having good intents towards man; spirits are evil in and of their very design; any other teaching at all is pro-occult and is never to be accepted on the topic of spirits. Indeed, there never ever was such a thing as a "good spirit", anyone who even lets the idea of a good spirit exist is pro-occult and certain to go to Hell- even post canonization by the papacy itself!
Here's where Aquinas is heretical: powers, no matter what they are, are categorically forbidden for us; as they would put us into the occult; and the higher something is, the more evil it is- this's an infallible principle: that the higher something is, the less-moral it is, in and of itself... indeed, as a direct fruit of the Church's rightful condemnation of the occult; any human being is infinitely more moral than any spirit, and that absolutely includes the most evil of men are infinitely more moral than any and all spirits combined, due solely to the men being men and the spirits being spirits. Indeed, man and the spirit are diametrically opposed forever; and this war can only end with the complete eradication of all spirit scum- and there is no such thing as a spirit that is trustworthy- to believe anything else is directly from the occult and is to be categorically rejected forever, as is anyone who endorses any and all contact with any spirit, even a "heavenly" one, vermin that they are for existing as spirits to begin with!

I was drinking from my coffee mug as you cheersed and twas a nice little moment
I have just discovered this - this is genius! Thank you, thank you!
When Matt was talking about being addicted McDonald's and Mountain Dew I was like "dang, how did he know?"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
When I was in high school I could play all of Hetfield's rhythm guitar parts for the first 5 albums. I never got a handle on Kirk's solos.
Don't remember more than bits and pieces now...Especially with no electric guitar for many years. The acoustic tracks like Fade to Black are beautiful.
Metallica and Orion are darn near Masterpieces! Great stuff Matt, love your channel brother.
Orion is my favorite track, it means a lot to think of it in the context of how they lost their band mate Cliff Burton, the bassists, not long after releasing the song. Cheers from a fellow fan Matt!
Great episode, thank you for sharing the music you love too Matt, it’s one of my favourite things to see someone explain why they adore a particular band or song. Music can be a great window to the soul
AH favorite Metallic Album! MATT! You picked the sweetest part of Orion!!! DUDE!! YES!
When are you going to do the women strive course
Please pray for my atheist friend whom the 8 daughters of lust have enveloped. i have not given up on her but she hates my faith and wishes i would just shutup already. she really hates the catholic church especially but if she calls to ask me for advice, and i get my own advice from scripture and tradition, then that's what she gets. She actually isn't a bad person, just blind to her own prejudice. I love her like a sister and ask the saints to pray for her often.
When Matt started reading Dante meeting the women,
Matt becomes dante,
Matt becomes the women,
Matt becomes dangerously the characters,
Scary and wonderful reading.
Constructively, this is the first episode where I was a little lost with theology terminology. Otherwise, I love the channel!
Good stuff, Matt, thanks!

You are an excellent teacher really loved this
I love Metallica! One of my favorite bands!!! For whom the bell tolls and sanitarium are my favorite songs. Of course I love songs from their black album too!

Metallica is immensely talented and innovative. Hetfield has struggled with addiction for a while now, seems like a good dude though. Thanks for the video.

She is the logical result when the moral law is stripped from the civil law
@@Canisius19 not quite, the moral law you're referring to is actually just one of your religious laws(a pretty arbitrary one at that) and was designed to be separate from the civil by the founders of the constitution.

Hello brother! Thank for your show! And thank you for loving Metallica 🙏. My cousin Jason who was a self taught brilliant guitarist in his own right is who got me listening to them when I was around 13 years old and I’ve loved them ever since. Unfortunately Jason got into drugs and we lost him a few years ago. When I listen to Metallica I feel connected with him again though. The only heavy Metal band I was ever into and I was super into them. Cliff Burton was my 80s crush so of course I love the song Orion. ¥When a man lies, he murders some part of the world

Matt, did not mean to crash your comment on Metallica. Just seen too much ruin come about through certain types of music is all. You know it is bad when even the artist describes his broken life. Most people are not affected so negatively but some are for sure. I am heartbroken about the movie and music industry being ruined by satan. May God deliver us all!!! 🙏

Hey Matt! Good day!
They're so musically proficient. One of the proofs of that is James and Kirk's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Matt, listen to their live version from their movie "Through the never." You will never regret it.
Terrific ! Thank you 🙏
Why is Thomas Aquinas so sexist? He calls women “ defective and misbegotten” and describes lust as “ the 8 daughters of lust” Why? Why not the 8 sons of lust? Thank God he was a priest and not a husband. He would have been a terrible husband and father! Why Matt Fradd respects this guy so much is mind boggling
@T Z I agree with you! Aquinas seems to have some major hang ups when it comes to women. Maybe that is why he was a priest? The only good thing I ever heard that he said about women is that Marriage is the greatest of friendships. I guess you could say that about man’s best friend too (dog) so I’m not giving him too many points for that either!

We are all called to celibacy unless called to the sacrament of marriage. We need to be more forceful about this.
Chastity in marriage. Look it up. JP2. Theology of the body.
@@am3986 There is a difference in celibacy and chastity. You are correct to have chastity in marriage, but Heath is correct in saying that we are to be celibate outside of marriage.
Doesn't self-love (in this context) mean narcissism? The pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's idealised self-image and attributes.
Kind of. The self love that comes from pride. The one that does not allow us to accept our faults and reconcile with God after we fall. The self -love that leads us into shock when we sin. This is best defined by Saint Francis De Sales in the book How to Profit to one's faults.

It would be cool if you did a video about rock music/secular music and whether or not it is an acceptable part of a Christian life. I may not have phrased that correctly, but hopefully you understand what I mean (if you read this lol). As someone who really likes rock music (mostly Christian stuff) I would be very interested in this. It would be cool if you could interview an artist about it. John Cooper from skillet comes to mind

3:00 Hi Matt, what do you say to those who take a more Platonist vs Aristotelian view that the will proceeds the intellect?
You said that one will act a certain way based on what they think. But couldn’t one conversely form the way they think around what they want to believe?
Thanks mate!
Metallica is so good!! The drumming is so sick!!
@MattFradd If you want a real banger that's a little more elaborate and less repetitive check out this bad boy. The story goes Shostakovich (living in Communist Russia and having just joined the Communist Party) wrote this entire string quartet in three days as a sort of suicide note. He ended up not following through with the act thankfully but left us with an intense and dark but beautiful piece of music.

Master of puppets is my fav.Metallica record
About 12 minutes 13 in matt references two ends to the sexual act being a John Paul the 2nd invention.
The objection as I understand it is the elevation of the secondary end to equal primacy the "two fold" end to marriage. That is a modernist invention.
St Thomas doesn't seem to be arguing for an equal primacy of the secondary end, just that it is one of the ends.
I'll refer you to the 1917 pio-benedictine code of cannon law in which states "§ 1. The primary end of marriage is the procreation and education of children; the secondary
[end] is mutual support and a remedy for concupiscence"
(Canon 565)
(Just a quick search away)
This predates the equal primacy of unity and procreation. We don't have to take this errant interpretation of humanae vitae as an infallible teaching as it flies in the face of the traditional teaching as opposed to defining something that's unclarified.
Also the flowing from a letter to confused Catholics.
"The question is raised in the same way regarding
marriage. Marriage had always been defined by its first
aim which was procreation and its secondary aim which was married love. Now, at the Council they sought to
alter this definition and say there was no longer a primary
aim but that the two aims of which I speak were
equivalent. It was Cardinal Suenens who proposed this
change and I still remember Cardinal Brown, the Master
General of the Dominicans getting up to say "Caveatis,
caveatis, (Beware, beware!) Ifwe accept this definition we
go against all the tradition of the Church and we pervert
the meaning of marriage. We do not have the right to
modify the Church's traditional definitions. "
Is Thomas Aquinas the first catholic saint to support neo-platonic "free will"? The first Christian writers I can find that support this are Tatian and Tertullian but they are not saints, and the only theologian to emphasize it was Pelagius, who was condemned as a heretic at the Council of Carthage:
(Carthage Canon CXI) "Likewise it seemed good, that whoever should say that the grace of God, by which a man is justified through Jesus Christ our Lord, avails only for the remission of past sins, and not for assistance against committing sins in the future, let him be anathema."
(Carthage Canon CXII) "Also, whoever shall say that the same grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord helps us only in not sinning by revealing to us and opening to our understanding the commandments, so that we may know what to seek, what we ought to avoid, and also that we should love to do so, but that through it we are not helped so that we are able to do what we know we should do, let him be anathema. For as of God it is written, _Who teaches man knowledge,_ so also it is written, _Love is of God."_
(Carthage Canon CXIII) "It seemed good that whosoever should say that the grace of justification was given to us only that we might be able more readily by grace to perform what we were ordered to do through our free will; as if though grace was not given, although not easily, yet nevertheless we could even without grace fulfil the divine commandments, let him be anathema. For the Lord spoke concerning the fruits of the commandments, when he said: _Without me you can do nothing,_ and not _Without me you could do it but with difficulty."_
Matt, great video on lust. Thank you for that. Metallic is a talented, but this band is wicked and so is what they produce. Why any Christian would promote Metallica after giving a great presentation on the sins of lust is inconceivable. Ever listen to the words of their song "So What"? It's filth. This is not music for Christians. Read the lyrics to the song. You will gag at the stench of the hag when her robe is opened.

And I sure wouldn't want to read Herr Hitler's book, unless I wanted to pull apart his movement, and disembowel his influence in the "woke" mentality of today- which resembles his ideas very closely I might add.
A *lot* of why you read something is dependent on what you are trying to accomplish by reading it as it turns out.
