SE is leaving money on the table, when they dont do multiplatform. It makes no sense to be exclusive at this point, especially if they're a third party developer. the whole woke thing is dumb for SE to do to begin with. Plus with the 70 dollar price tag... people are going to be more selective in their purchase.

Square already started this when they shut down the Forspoken studio, sold off Tomb Raider and abandoned their failed Marvel games. These new layoffs are the second or third wave.

They should be glad to have Yoshi-P. He saved FFXIV, which is one of if not the most profitable game. I'm betting FFXIV is what kept them afloat through all of this, especially with the massive influx of former WoW players and now Xbox players.
also consoles have all the trouble of gaming pc without any of the advantages, patches, community fixes, roll backs, etc and game libraries end up forever lost with the sunsetting of service.

JRPG's have basically been telling the same story, with the same tropey characters over and over again for the past 30 some odd years. Japanese gamers and devs have handicapped themselves due to a pointless superiority complex, and refuse to accept that their tastes and ideas are mostly stale now. They would've better served opening themselves up to more western ideas.
I say this as someone who loves both JRPG's & WRPG's. But the Japanese are stubborn to a fault.

Bravely Default 2 was so good, yet SE didn't talk about it that much nor do they care for Octopath Traveler franchise. When will they learn that turn based jrpgs isn't a dead genre to the point that Atlus's Persona/SMT franchises are eating their lunch?
@@odindarkll3706 you'll find it's not just SE, it's actually a lot of Dev's and Publishers, they are all chasing the big cash cows, and not realizing that they have a serviceable niche, that they can easily capitalize on, and be rolling in money.
Games like Sea of Stars etc have proven the staying power of RPGs. It blows my mind that Square wouldnt take a Nintendo route and just spam their gold earning IPs But taking their time to build hype and making sure they perform well on release. Square could be making bank with FF remakes/remasters and other series like Vagrant Stories. Id give practically anything for a modern graphic rehaul of FF9, with limited to no story changes.

Game studios are hitting the same wall that Hollywood first started smashing their head into several years ago; games with massive budgets that literally can't afford to fail will, and should no longer be the norm. Also, exclusivity is so bad for the consumer, so I applaud the slow dissolution of the platform walls that have long plagued us.

Part of the problem (and I can't say this necessarily applies to Square Enix), is these AAA studios (and Hollywood) keep going for the homerun ball and are striking out. Quit swinging for the fences and just put out a complete, solid game.
Hugely expensive games are just very risky. If you don't get a homerun, you lose your ass. You'd think they'd figure that out and just pivot accordingly, but they seem to not get the message. I think it's because they've become convinced that spectacle is their brand for their flagship products; smaller, intimate stories can be the province of things like I Am Setsuna, but those are also not made in-house. They seem to feel compelled to make their in-house stuff epic or nothing, and it frequently goes the direction of nothing.
They could fire their writing team too, while they're at it.
SquareEnix has spent DECADES driving Final Fantasy into the ground. 1-10 were some of my favorite games of all time, and then despite how financially successful 10 was, they (for some idiotic reason) essentially "unofficially cancelled" the series, and just started slapping the title on any random game they made. I can't think of a single game since then, that was actually made as a Final Fantasy game.
Recently, they added a ton of fuel to the fire by jumping on the woke bandwagon. There is nothing about a modern game with "Final Fantasy" on the cover that will get me to look twice at it. The series is a massively abused zombie. In fact, it's hard to even call it a "series" at this point, since a series is a group of similar games.
FF 11 and 14 are good game
FF 13 was, but it was supposed to be the anchor for a larger spin off set of games the entire project was very odd and most of the games in it were rather confused, the promise of more inter connected lore fell apart as games like FF 15 formerly FF vs 13 got cannibalized for the mainline series, I think basically they wanted to duplicate Ivalise but in a Kingdom Hearts Meta way, it didn't work.

Same. I'd rather it and other I.P.s be left the hell alone until we've gotten out of, or at least far away enough from, this toxic, censorship happy "politically correct" funk we're currently suffering. Same way I feel about something like 'The Legend of Dragoon' and 'Legacy of Kain'. I'd love remakes or new installments of those gems but no. . . . . .not now. Give it another 10 or so years and then, MAYBE.

not just that. The Taito console game collections don't even exist, people want those games. Nowhere in sight...instead more Final Fantasy remakes for sum reason and still pushing only Taito arcade games. No classic Square and Enix collections either outside of Japan, stuck with remake collections with their censorships.

The fact that almost everyone thinks it was sourced out to some American studios speaks world about peoples' current perception of Western games
Square even its Eastern Studios for years have been some of the worst. They have a habit of blaming all their failings on their western divisions. Rageaholic has a great video on square where he talks about its failings for a bit. Not perfect but pretty good.
Doesn't change the fact that it's focus was towards a "modern" western audience. And that they listened to "western" advisors who don't even know their anything about what the actual western audience wants. They went with the loudest idiots instead of reliable professionals and got screwed.
The loudest people don't speak for everyone.
But they specifically aimed for the Western market and had consultants for it.
Well, they made that pile of shit FOR the western audience. Which probably explains why it's the way that it is.
They think the western audience = the main character in Forspoken.

Even when the Square Enix Sony exclusive games finally make it to PC... The momentum is over. The games are now 'old'. And then they expect people to pay full price for what is an 'old' game no one cares about anymore.

I also think this is why they want to release everywhere so everyone can get on board of the hype, and get them. Sony just didn't pay enough to justify the momentum loss.
Then the install base of only PS5 is lower than PS4 + PS5 combined when it was for FF7 Remake.
Then probably see how Sony trying to strong arm Stellar Blade and HD2. which profits sony a lot but not the developers. Imagine the loss momentum with additional "Need PSN to play" sticked on top of it.
I think a lot of people just watch streamer play the game if they can't play themselves. By the time the game is out in steam, people already hyped for another game.
Unless the Dev has a wall full of anime and a comic collection from the 80s and 90s I'd purge them too.

@@leongay3190 - The Gameboy Pokémon games were definitely RPGs. I never got into them myself, but I can't deny their quality and replayability when both adults that grew up with them, up to modern kids all love the games. The Pokémon RPGs are up there in the ranks of the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games for a reason.
This is absolutely good news, and between their executive shakes up over the past year, like replacing the CEO who made Forspoken happen, as well as making Hamaguchi and Asano executives. Both Hamaguchi, Asano, and the Visions of Mana lead dev have stated that they want to stop trying to cater to western audience and make games for fans. As of right now, this Square is definitely on a positive path.

You know every once in a while game journalists in the mainstream throw out the narrative "there are too much X genre of games" or "X genre in games are dead". Truth is most gamers don't care most of the time what genre the game is, sure there are niche genres like RTS, basebuilding, management and so on but generally if its good game we will play it. I remember about 5 years ago the whole BS that "single player games are dead" was being spun like a rotisserie chicken until Red dead redemption 2 and Hogwarts legacy took a giant dump on that narrative. What it really was was them trying to say "oh we can't make as much money leaching of players with single player games so lets pretend they are dying out so we dont have to make as many or none at all".

Anime and manga are super popular in the west right now, and people are more and more looking away from western productions, so I think this is the best move SE could have done. Make more Japanese stuff that sells well instead of western stuff that doesn't.

16 itself was a good game, just really got hurt by its exclusivity. Its great to hear that SE is getting back to japanese development only. Main reason im a fan of their games. If they need translation help Koji Fox off of CBU3 can deff do a 100% better job that any of these California employees. Cbu3 has earned my trust over the past 10 years due to FF14 being so damn good.

There is ALWAYS going to be consoles. The PC has its place, but consoles do too and there is absolutely no way that Sony give up on hardware.
Consoles are Budget PCs that are hard locked to be used in a certain way by the Makers...
Consoles' only advantage is their Exclusive Games...
Consoles will exist as long as people believe they are worth it for the Exclusive Games...
@@jasperreyes5174 Consoles are not PCs. They are dedicated systems for games. As the components can be purchased in bulk by Sony or Nintendo, the cost per unit is less than an equivalent PC.
Consoles are also considerably cheaper than an equivalent PC that will match the same performance. They are also much more convenient than PCs. Most people have space in their living room for a console, connected to a TV. The same is not the case for a PC.
These really cater to two different markets. Consoles offer cost effective entry into gaming, with simple setup, dedicated controllers and physical games. While the PC offers freedom to upgrade hardware as you choose, but lose convenience, require tweeking to get the best performance, choosing the best hardware matches etc. But that comes at greaters cost for the hardware for the same performance as a PS5.

Not to mention that some Game Consoles can be jailbroken to have them run Games from regions outside the US, as well as have Emulators run on them.

I'm just bringing this up because it was brought up in the video. When Final Fantasy XV was Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the game was to be more like an alternative to the main FFXIII. They didn't share continuity, but did share concepts for lore and mythology.

PC will survive but I don't see Square getting the sales they want not making Nintendo as the main console. The plug in and play that consoles bring can't be replaced by PC gaming. Some will convert to PC but not all.

Square Enix burned a lot of people with the remake that wasn't a remake, and let's be honest here: their verbose games don't sell to teenagers with the attention span of a coked-up fly, and their writing is too shallow for adults.

At last Square Enix is acknowledging the error of their ways and trying to change course for the better, and with a good timing with the PSN bs is happening with Sony among other shenanigans happening in the Video game industry as we speak.

In 2015, I went to Long Beach, ca, and saw Square as I left LAX. I was amazed….now, I really dislike Square America.

Getting rid of the Sony exclusivity deal is honestly the smartest move SE has done in a longtime. Mainly because they can now start to focus on supporting Nintendo since Japan is more info the Switch (& most likely Switch 2) than Playstation these days.
FF9 was the best PS1 game from the 3, FF8/7 is hard to say what is best. FF9 relay was amazing.
I wonder if part of the reason for the decline in the popularity of JRPGs has been the shift to more realism. Visions of Mana may bring back some of the magic.
“13 versus” didn’t have anything to do with 13. It was called that because it was being developed in tandem with the game that eventually solidified itself as 13. 15 was so massive in scope (and ultimately still wasn’t fully realized in the end) that its development time spanned multiple entries.
I'm glad for less exclusivity, however, I don't think it really addresses the problem. I just don't think it's a good business strategy to try to grow out of all problems. Eventually you reach a point where you can't grow anymore. They need to reign in the budgets more than they need to bring in new customers.

Square isn’t the only big RPG company out there. Atlus makes a lot of great RPGs, that are not compromised by outside influences, and are apparently making a lot of money

And FF7 really did have a big impact on my life, and so, is still my favorite. The original, not the remake.
I can't even blame them. The last "good' game that was under the Square-Enix label from a Western studio that I remember is "Supreme Commander 2" and even that was...quirky.

I'm 42 and have been playing square games as long as I can remember. While the older final fantasy games were simple they were enjoyable. When they jumped to Sony I also made that jump and have continued following the company like a true fan. No not every game has been perfect and I have questioned some of the direction the main line ff games have taken. I have not loved a Final Fantasy mainline series in a very long time. I enjoyed the mmos 11 and 14 and have played 14 since 1.0. I always hope the SE can get better like they did with 14 but I truly wish the main line would return to making games vs movies. I think this move away from Sony will help with that
There was a saying back in the day " We spend more time waiting from SE games then we do playing them and I hope they do return to quality games I truly hope they get back to making good story driven games with fun game play ff16 wasn't a terrible game but it's not what a fan as dated as I am wanted. I loved all the characters in the game but the gameplay was dull. If I wanted to play DMC I would play DMC. I WISH SE would take note of games like yakuza and persona and realize that there is still a desire for turn-based combat. All they have to do is make it more dynamic like yakuza and I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy bith the gameplay and the story.

I refuse to own a PS5. They said before the system came out they were gonna censor games. Many people glossed over that because it's Sony.
I remember being so happy to get a Playstation because it was the "adult" console. As a kid, I wanted a PS1 because it was the system with bloody and cool games for mature players.
Now, I don't even care about them. At this point, I just use my PS4 for streaming and "Minecraft." I literally haven't bought a new game since "Persona 5."

I’ve been hearing that they weren’t going to be exclusive to Sony anymore but also pretty much being done with western developers is a good move to me. I feel with the video game crash it’ll be more so of western developers except insanely huge money makers like GTA & CoD that will never go away due to their popularity & I’d actually prefer that to be completely honest because I think that’s really the only way we’ll purge people with woke agendas from the industry.
So hopefully these talented developers can create their own companies using their own moneys since they know what gamers need to play.
