I watched Earl Campbell play football from high school to New Orleans Saints. I can honestly say I have seen the best running back ever to play football. Thank you Lord!

Amen. When I see modern running backs like Marshawn Lynch and Derrick Henry get talked about as being great, I always think back to watching Earl Campbell play and laugh. These other guys are good, no disrespect to them, but Earl Campbell was on a different level. I was lucky enough to be able to see some games in the Astrodome as a kid. His runs, every single one, was like these modern guys highlights. Every run had him breaking multiple tackles and making defenses look silly. Earl is, was, and will forever be the best running back to play the game.

Earl ran over you or around with equal ease
He was just a horse in cleats. I never saw him get caught from behind. To have that power and speed, very very rare indeed

I love Earl Campbell. My brother in law(6"4" 240 - linebacker) played him in a HS playoff game(from north Texas) and said he ran over me twice and I didn't even slow him down. He also makes a pretty decent sausage.

Earl was a home grown hero. He was country all the way and a true gentleman.i was lucky enough to have drinks with him once. He would not let us pay for a round. He threw down a hundred and went and gave a speech to graduating high schoolers . He came back continued to chat.He never shyed away from the public. Him and Bum lived and played golf only a few miles from were I grew up. He was down to earth but played like a god.

My only critique is Barry belongs in that conversation. I can never choose which I think is best because their styles were so different. In my dream world, I have both on my team in a rotation and defenses are not just brutalized and beaten, but exhausted and embarrassed. Can you imagine being able to run an offense with both at you disposal?

The Oilers practiced off-season in San Angelo where I lived at the time.
I went to watch them a few times and after practice, there would be a line of kids wanting his autograph.
No matter how tired he was or how long it took he signed for every one of those young fans.
They didn't call them the Houston Earlers for nothing.
    Class
    Humble
    Controlled power
    Makes terrific sausage

My favorite Earl Campbell plays is the goal line play vs the Raiders. The Assassin Jack Tatum hits Campbell and he still scored. My other favorite play was the run vs the Rams. He f***ing head butted a guy. His jersey tore and he was still going. God damn beast.

    • @AnubisXII

Yeah man. And if you watch that play against the rams, Earl uses that dude to take out two other players. One perfectly placed hit, three defenders taken out of the play.
Getting hit by Earl Campbell was probably like being hit by a car.

Jesus. That’d be ridiculous. I wanna say the entire time Campbell was on the Oilers he had a single O-linemen who made the pro bowl and he only made it once. Yet Earl still played like that.

I have followed Big Earl for years and met him one Spring Break at Louies Back Yard on S Padre Island, Tx while on promo for Skoal Tobacco along with Dallas Cowboy Randy White. Served Earl a cold beer and shook his bear paw of a hand and told him he was my favorite running back of all time and he laughed and said in country drawl. "Thanks a lot man. " Pure power. The entire country knew he was getting ball and could not tackle him. He punished defensive linemen which was normally unheard of until EARL. The best !

Back in these days, teams had so much character and personality. Watching the Oilers was fun, but not the way you might think. You had to love 3 yards and a cloud of dust (not in the Astrodome of course, the dust part lol) because when they had the game wrapped up, needed to eat up the clock, or even just to tire out the defense and get something going, that's what you got with Earl diving to the middle over and over. Of course, there were the big moments, but that's what you got mostly. And yeah, Bum and his cowboy hat.

Lynch is compared to Campbell, but is neither as big or as physical. Lynch bounces off guys, Campbell went through them. Lacy is decent but hasn't had the discipline to be a consistently good back, now somewhere around 20-30 lbs. overweight. The closest I've seen to Campbell was Gary Brown, who played with Moon for Houston in the early 90s.

Greatness. What bothered me were the last few years; still not exactly sure what injuries he had if any to lead him to retire when he did. Would've been nice to see him have a second act, on a stable team like Washington for example, that got Rodgers instead of Campbell. I know that Campbell said that when he couldn't outrun the defense anymore, it was time to go but still..

My dad was a sales director for a major bread distributor in Texas. They used to hold charity golf tournaments and Earl was always invited and he would always oblige. After the tourney was finished they would have like a banquet style dinner and Earl would come to the banquet and hang out and then give a speech or at least make the rounds. Mind you, this was 10 to 15 years after his career was over and I'll never forget the way he walked. He was this big, hulking man but he walked like he was damn near crippled. Also, any time he went from sitting to standing he would struggle like he was a 65 year old man and he was only in his mid 40s at the time. He was definitely overworked but I don't think he would've had it any other way. Not to mention, he was so classy and gracious to everyone at the events. I even played against his son in middle school and high school and he was no slouch either. Sorry for the long-winded reply but I've never spoken about this until now. In my opinion him and OJ Simpson were the two greatest runners I've ever seen at the RB position, Earl being the greatest. Just watch both of their old highlights and you'll know what I mean...unless you already have.

I agree with you; I spoke with OJ one on one at Studio 54 in NYC just before his last year in San Fran, and to this day thats the best halfback ever-very fast, excellent moves. He doesn;t get the credit because many didnt see him on TV, and the stuff that happened later. Earl had that limp and heart condition, after retirement, but I dont think that was the case when he played with NO, because they wouldn;t have traded for him had he had issues then. The only thing he said then was that he realized during that time that he'd lost speed; nothing else has ever been mentioned. I hated what happened to him and team after Phillips left. The only other back Id include with them is Bo, who had attributes of both of them, and unfortunately while he was healthy he always put baseball first so we'll never know. OJ was the only one of the three that had a full career, so we were cheated.

Spot on man, spot on. OJ was UNBELIEVABLE. Anytime I show someone his highlights they are blown away at his power and his INHUMAN speed. He was amazing and it's unfortunate how things turned out.

When he trucked that rams linebacker, it was said that man had emotional issues with living afterwards. That's how much manhood meant then.

Joshua Avery a really coach that was true old school and wore a cowboy hat...which he never wore indoors. There's a reason the bum Phillips era is so memorable

Joshua Avery - We have a pretty good version today in Rex Ryan. Imagine if Rex could've coached during Bum 's era with less all encompassing media. I think both their careers are very similar.

What an insult to Earl Campbell! He wasn't "the original beast mode" - He was Earl Fckin Campbell! To even utter Marshawn Lynch's name in a sentence with Mr. Campbell, as if he was even remotely close to being anywhere near as good a running back as Earl, is a complete insult and you're an imbecile!

Jim Brown gets a lot of praise for being dominant in his day, but the reality is Earl and Barry Sanders were the two best running backs of all time (Walter and Emmitt Smith were good, but are revered for stats in long careers). What's even better is they're both supremely humble guys who loved playing the game. No showing off, no dancing, no mouthing to opponents, just embarrassing defenses with a polite smile after handing the ball to the ref. These are the athletes to emulate.
If you were a defensive player asked, "who would you be most afraid to line up against?" and your answer is anything but Earl and Barry, you're lying or stupid.

I Respectfully disagree my fellow sports fan ,Jim Brown possessed every distinctive attribute a great RB is supposed to have, speed agility, power ,quickness, vision ,toughness, intestinal fortitude ,and he played in 12 and 14 game seasons in a era in which flags weren't routinely thrown for acts upon which a offensive player was bought to the ground . The playing field ,science, diet, equipment, first class travel , hotel accomodations, weren't as advanced as the generations proceeding Jim Browns era . He gets nonobjectively ostricized because of the false perception he competed exsclusively against inferior sized and athletic deficient defenders when in actuality most defensive lineman and linebackers outweighed Jim Brown who was a respectable 6'3 225 lbs , studies have also shown that while athletes in generations overlapping Browns were better,it's not by the vast degree many would percieved when considerations i previously mentioned weren't available for baby boomer NFL players ,when the technology, diet, training , equipment ,advantages aligned with Browns generation narrative applied the margin of athletes from proceeding eras of Brien's would be nearly equal . Percieving Jim Brown not bring dominant in any era is akin to stating Sugar Ray Robertson, Muhammad Ali, John Unitas ,Joe Montana ,Jerry Rice ,wouldn't transition successfully into previous eras . Wilt Chamberlain was theist imposing physical and athletic specimen during his prime inthe NBA SI was Shaquille Oneal ,by the idealogy that athletes who were bigger couldn't transition into another timeframe is lacking in context .Great players will always be capable of taking their skills towards other generations ,greatness defines greatness . If Earl Campbell can dominate ,why wouldn't a more durable , more agile ,superior vision Jim Brown ,who's actually bigger then Walter Payton and OJ Simpson ,yet had various ingredients that all three Hof gentlemen had , yet Jim possess elements they didn't . OJ Anderson of the St Louis Cardinals in 1979 during his rookie season rushed for over 1600 yds ,a big 228 ilb RB ,your telling me the great Jim Brown couldn't at minimal duplicate that ,when Jim Brown was better in terms of agility, vision, durability, speed ? Eliminate the generational biased based upon percieved beliefs rather then objective analogy ,no I'm not old enough to have witnessed Jim Brown perform live ,born 1965 ,but I've been a staunch advocate and practitioner of historical research with emotions removed , Don.Hutson ,Deacon Jones, Lawrence Taylor could have played in any era , again, great is great , and Jim Brown defined greatness as a football player .
