Hi folks! I know a lot of my viewers won't be interested in the details of my trailer upgrades, but "A LOT" of you said you were. So for those that are interested...here you go! I made separate videos with the details of the upgrades as to not interfere with your regular Sunday programing. Enjoy! :)

Cat, get a piece of scratch paper and calculate just how much power draw you'll ever imagine using yourself. That should help determine how much Amp Hours you'll need for your battery bank. Try to avoid overkill on the number of batteries you end up getting. If you plan it right, you can design the setup expandable thus saving money, weight and space.
Thank you for these the way you are doing them. Bob Wells just did a comparison of some lithium batteries and it is great to see the quality come up and price come down. That video also had some serious considerations about lithium and freezing temps. You might want to learn this for when you get out in temps near the freezing point. Just a thought. So much to learn, but you can do it. Especially with Dan's help. Most of us do not need to know the details much more than what an installer should be doing correct and one we can trust. You found a gem. And we need to know how to use without damaging the set up and what the limits are. Even as you spend a lot and expand to the most your trailer can hold it will never be unlimited like a home. solar still requires trade offs and monitoring. You might get AC but it will drain the batteries fast and cause more charging cycles to wear out your batteries. Nice to have when it is life or death but go easy on it daily. Realistic expectations are what matters really.
@@markpashia7067 The only time cold Temps are an issue with lithium batteries, is if you are in Temps below 10F. Great Job !! Thank goodness for great people like Dan in this lifetime. Very good information and looking forward to seeing how extra solar panels and new batteries are installed as well. You two have a great time in that beautiful area.
I enjoyed Dan's thorough overview very much. Last August I bought a brand new Sunray 115 (a small teardrop-like trailer) to pull behind my Subaru Outback. A gentleman I know set up more solar panels and installed the controller; so grateful to him. Anyway, I have always been in awe of the knowledge so very many men have. My father and my life long love, both of whom have passed away, were brilliant men. I have such respect for men with profound know-how like Dan.
Dan is proving the value of knowledge. By sharing it. Cat, as Dan says, you really want to go lithium ASAP. But, those batteries need to be very well-protected. Let's just say that lithium and water don't play well together! As for how much power you need, remember the "power" law: P (Watts) = I (Current(Amps)) X Voltage. As an example of the wiring "accessories" need, my 100 watt ham radio shortwave transceiver pulls 20A on transmit. So, I have the wiring (2 conductor #14) for that professionally installed from engine compartment into the luggage area of my car. (Radio is remotely controlled.) Also, watch the grounding! Grounding is super critical. In my case, I have to have additional grounding to prevent "RF feedback" when I'm on-air. Watch how Dan seals everything ujp. And, be ready to maintain those seals as they can deteroriate. This was a great inforfmative video!
@@johnpinckney4979 Yes LFP and LiFePO4 are the same thing, and what the solar/RV industries usually mean when they say "lithium battery". The lithium batteries in EVs are different but much of that industry is transitioning to LFP too, as it's safe, cheap, and doesn't contain cobalt or nickel. The drawbacks are that LFP is heavier and bulkier than those chemistries that catch on fire, and LFP can't be charged below freezing so such use requires self-warming batteries, which uses a bit of their capacity. Cat would want to move her batteries indoors if she uses LFP.

Many of the new LiFePO4 batteries now have Bluetooth added to the battery management system (BMS). This allows monitoring the status of the battery, individual cells and battery temperature. A well designed LiFePO4 battery will have low temp cutoff to protect the battery when charging. Some manufacturers add heating elements to protect the batteries. You know the temperature extremes you experience so choose your batteries accordingly. Great installation Dan!
When running on the inverter be sure to disconnect the house battery charger called a converter. They are usually configured to charge the batteries anytime there is shore power. A circuit breaker feeding it should be switched off. The converter will not know the shore power is actually coming from an inverter and the batteries. What happens is the inverter takes power from the batteries, turns it into 120 volt ac, then the converter turns the 120 back into 12 volts DC. This is called a loop circuit. it will drain the batteries. Each device will consume electricity during the conversion so the result is wasted electricity. You are running the battery electricity through two devices then back to itself. You can not use a battery to recharge itself. The install looks top notch. Great workmanship. I retired as a transport Refrigeration Mechanic. Lots of electrical experience with 12 volt dc up to 460 volt ac.
@@phisanders6166 You will have to cut the loop and then use a multimeter to check. I pulled out the 30 amp shore power cord and brought it around to the compartment to check continuity. The looped wire was just barely long enough to make the connections in the transfer switch, so pull out as much as you can and cut in the middle. A transfer switch will be required.
Catherine, I found you through Mobiltec. It’s a really professional video and install. I’m getting ready to install a 3,000 watt inverter, and between 400-600 amp hours of lithium. This is the most professionally done install I’ve seen to date. Take good care.
How great are people?? I have noticed the same thing in my year and a half of full time RVing. The news says we are divided, but I don't see it with all the folks I have met. I am so glad you ran into Dan and the great folks at that hardware store. This was a great overview and I understood the information. Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next one.
Have same inverter works great 👍 I just hard wired an outlet on the outside of my camper and plug into my 50amp outon the camper. Now runs everything even one of my 15k ac units with a soft start .
Good job dan I just added two more solar panels to the top of my Harley trailer so I have a total of 500 W going into my truck and trailer now ok 👌🏼🔥🤠🔥Camping Russ out
The hardware store really came through for you, so did Dan. There’s really some good people left in the world. You’re so sweet, everyone would fall in line to help. I’m taking a vintage class restoration class from Mobiltec (Larry) and he shared one of your videos with us since you were such a dear soul, take care.
That was so nice of him to help you and he explains it very well to the people that might not understand. Great video and looking forward to the rest of the installation. Thank you
Great Video. Only cautionary comment I would make is Dan has the fuse in the wrong location. That large fuse he placed at the inverter should be as close as possible to the batteries. I noticed in a shot at 11:25 that the positive cables come straight off the battery and go into the trailer. If there is a short anywhere between the positive lug and that fuse, it will absolutely melt and possibly catch fire.
Thank you both for your time making this informative video. Catherine or Dan….in the video you mentioned the microwave was wired differently and would not be included with the inverter power once installed. My question is….where or how did you wire the microwave to tie it into the power inverter system? I am guessing that you might have tied it into an outlet. Just want to pick your brains for information. Lol. Thank you both.
Good Job... You'll love it when you can turn on your coffee maker and have your coffee... That's exactly how I did my inverter setup my 5th wheel as I dry camp 99% of the time....My Solar panels do a good job keeping up with the battery draw when using the inverter...
Wow how fortunate you are to have a friend to help you out. I would love to find someone like him who would be willing to install those things. For us single women who are not knowledgeable enough in this area we need reliable help like you got. Does Dan have a brother? Ha ha ha! Love all your videos. Please keep them coming. Thank you so much!
Wow, this video has only been up for 7 hours and already over 7.5k views and 191 comments! Cat, I don't know if you've thought of this, but doing videos like this will bring in a whole new audience for you! I know a little bit about how the UA-cam algorithms work. Having key words like "Inverter" and "Solar" in your video titles will help a LOT since many RV'ers are interested in these subjects. DAN IS THE MAN! Thank you so much for helping Cat out with your expert knowledge and kind spirit. I'm a firm believer in that giving freely towards others is like putting money in the bank. A time will come when you will need help. When that time comes, you will be able to draw on that "bank account" freely. God bless you man! And you're right, the sooner Cat can get some Lithium batteries in there, the better. I run Battle Born Lithium in my Lance truck camper and for my boats trolling motor. Best investment ever. Battle Born's are pricey but I believe they are the best. I wonder if they know about Cat's channel. Hmm... may have to send them a "hint". :)
So nice of Dan to install your inverter. Lots of work! He must've been an electrician to have the vast knowledge that he has. You'll have every electrical convenience, Cat. It all went way over my head, but still was interesting. I have the Little Guy teardrop camper with a 12 volt battery which I keep charged in winter with the Junior Battery Tender. That's as technical as I get - haha.
This is very helpful Catherine! I just bought renogy as well. I bought the same as you, 400 watt of solar and 2 lithium batteries. I’ll be adding to my lance 990 truck camper.
Shout out to Dan for your kindness to Cat! Cat I hope you have better luck than I did with my set up. My system is much like yours is currently. The two solar panels did not generate enough power to really allow me to use the 120V. I just used my 12V for fridge and lights. Wanted to cook with 120V, but I just use camp stove and backpacker jet boil. It would drain my batteries fast. You will have better performance I am sure with your added solar and lithium batteries.
Cat, informative video!!! It's hard to balance a good description of what is being done with details that an electrician, technician, or electrical engineer would be interested in. Dan did a nice job!!!
That was one of the most informative travel trailer upgrade videos I have ever seen. Although our Springdale trailer already has an inverter, at least I now know the components that went into it. And the solar interface will be really handy to know about when we go to install solar panels in the future. Thanks much!

Dan, ..... You went above, and, beyond, ..... Kudos Sir, ... Best Wish's.......
You are correct, For the most part, RVers are awesome!
Thank you Dan, you are a very kind and generous man❤️
Excellent video! Dan dis such a good job of installing and explaining the addition of the inverter!
Have same inverter works great 👍
I just hard wired an outlet on the outside of my camper and plug into my 50amp outon the camper.
Catherine, thanks to Dan for all his hard work and getting your converter set up love the video can’t wait for the next take care God bless
Thanks for explaining all of this Dan. It has provided me with much more knowledge.
That was so nice of him to help you and he explains it very well to the people that might not understand. Great video and looking forward to the rest of the installation. Thank you
That's great. Dan, you're a great American. I'm looking forward to the next video. 👍
Glad ur setup - enjoy it, good luck Rembrandt.
I really enjoyed the video . You were so lucky to have a great friends that has the knowledge to install your system . Thank you Dan .
Thank you for the information. Blessings
Your friend Dan does very good work. I have worked a lot of similar type jobs and I know when I see good work!
Thx Dan!
And great video…..thx for the “one off” video for us outdoor folks who are also DIYers and like learning about this type of stuff
Great Video. Only cautionary comment I would make is Dan has the fuse in the wrong location. That large fuse he placed at the inverter should be as close as possible to the batteries. I noticed in a shot at 11:25 that the positive cables come straight off the battery and go into the trailer. If there is a short anywhere between the positive lug and that fuse, it will absolutely melt and possibly catch fire.
thank god for Dan!!!! Awesome video!
We just got the same camper and I was wondering the same thing, except I would like to do the fridge
Hi Lynn, I love to help friends whenever I can. So we will have to become friends first, lol
Dan ...... hope to see you down the road then. 🙋🏼♀️

Dan is the man! Great skill and knowledge!Your new home is so nice!!
That was great DAN IS THE MAN 🍻
That was one of the most informative travel trailer upgrade videos I have ever seen. Although our Springdale trailer already has an inverter, at least I now know the components that went into it. And the solar interface will be really handy to know about when we go to install solar panels in the future. Thanks much!
