3:20 Can you expand on how being a programmer helps contribute to a medical school's diversity?

Being able to program can add an entirely new dimension to many scholarly projects taking place in medical schools!

In terms of the gap year question, how should you go about discussing your time off when your plans have been cancelled due to COVID-19?

    • @Shemmassian

I'd advise you to discuss what you have done in the time prior to the pandemic and if space permits, what you were planning to do with the remainder of the time off!

Hey - thanks for this video, very helpful. I was actually doing some brainstorming about the 'adversity' question before watching this, and was a little stumped because I was having some trouble thinking of an all-encompassing lifelong problem... its much easier for me to frame the essay around more trivial, short-term hardships (although of course they were distinct sources of difficulty at the time).
Anyways, there's a lot of writing in my future as I'm planning on applying to a lot of schools, but we can only do our best, right? I'll be sure to give it as good a shot as I can. Thanks again for all your videos, and I'll be sure to use them when interview season rolls around as well.

I have been working in my families Optometric practice since I was 15. I now preform pretesting( blood pressures, visual acuity, intraocular pressures, keratometry and refraction). I had other clinical opportunities but they were cancelled due to the pandemic. Will my seven years optical experience be sufficient to apply this cycle? Or, should I take a gap year and try to get a different type of clinical experience?

I think that's wonderful clinical experience. Many medical schools may wonder, though, if you have clinical experience in a context outside of Optometry. Having clinical experience within the context of a medical clinic or a hospital would certainly quell those concerns that many AdComs may have.

If you want to go to a US medical school because you want to practice there, your options are to A) go to university here and pay a lot, and then apply to medical school after graduating or B) go do your MBBS in india and then come here for residency. Don't worry about reputation, all Indian FMGs outside of the very top grads are pretty much on equal footing when it comes to residency applications. What matters is your English skills, honds-on US clinical experiences, and step 2 score.
