She wrote the song while studying in college. It is supposed to illustrate "unconscious cruelty." The family says things about Billy Joe oblivious to how his jumping and their statements are impacting her. I grew up listening to this haunting song. It's beautiful and disturbing at the same time, which seems to be the point. A fantastic song with a deep meaning.
Wow I didn’t know that but that makes a lot of sense seems in the song she was just a child and they were telling her this without shielding her innocence in a way. But I couldn’t have said it better myself, beautiful yet very haunting! Extremely deep meaning. Thank you for commenting, I appreciate it!💙☺️
I always loved this song. Your words about the song ring so true. You should check out the song Troubled Child by Joni Mitchell. I would love to hear what you think of it. Peace and love. Thank you !
Why thank you so much!☺️and I will absolutely check that song out! Thank you for your suggestion and thank for watching and commenting. I appreciate it🥰
I don't know why l like you so much, but l saw this Bobbi Gentry reaction, this girl was incredible, and so is this song. I'm from the Angelina Jordan camp. Oh by the way you might be curious to hear Angelina did a short TikTok, a little jazzy version of Jasmine Sullivan's " Bust Your Windows."
Aww well thank you, I appreciate the love and support!🥰 And yes this song was sad yet compelling! Great song! But ok thank you I will go check that out with Angelina. Thank you for commenting.☺️
I was 6 when this song came out... Even then I think I understood it rather well. I always felt that She and billy Joe killed someone (Either accidentally or on purpose). Then, threw that person off the bridge. Billy Joe's guilt over what happened caused him to jump from the bridge. The focus of the story is the cruelty of the people left behind. Nobody cares that Billy Joe Killed himself and are ready to move on with their lives. She is too wrapped up in her part of this to be able to care.
The question on everybody's mind back then was what did she and Billy Joe throw off the bridge? A newborn baby or an aborted fetus were the leading candidates.
Not far from where I grew up. I was there a few days ago fishing on the Yazoo river. That part of Mississippi is a rough place to grow up its extremely 👉HOT and Humid👈flat land. I remember as a kid having black runner snakes chase me through the cotton fields. That's close to the crossroads where the devil buys souls like the father of Mississippi blue's Robert Johnson sold his soul.😮
Say what now? Is that true? Don’t even get me started in that lol because I’ve heard some stuff about some artist selling their souls. But I never heard this Mississippi thing.
There's always been argument about if they threw an illegitimate 'baby' was thrown off bridge....... *I do not believe that would be it beause she is 15-17 at the time in song, & since she seems to be very closely watched over by her mother & dad. So, she would not be pregnant without their knowledge, both of her parents.*
Trouble with that video is that that Tallahachie Bridge looks like something kids would dive off for fun - not exactly the Golden Gate Bridge. As is often the case, I just find the video distracting.
I travel for my job and I had a assignment in Oxford, Mississippi and had some time so I checked out the bridge and the river. Yeah it didn't seem that high up but that water is nasty. The area around was sort of creepy. Still Bobby Gentry's voice is so soothing.
This song was released in 1967. Max Baer Jr. who played Jethro on The Beverley Hillbillies directed and produced a movie about the song that was released in 1976. I remember having to go with my sister to watch that movie in the Summer of 1976 at the local Drive-In Theater that has long been shut down. You neeed to watch the movie. It is as haunting as the song is.
If you want a story, “Fancy” ! Bobbie wrote and performed it, that’s the one you want. Reba McEntire did a successful cover 20 years later, 1990. Around 1980 she vanished from the public eye, really, vanished. She died in 2022 she was 80.
Good songs have melodies - great songs tell a story and make you think. This is a great song

Love her style, just a nice easy laid back acoustic sound.

There was another woman who died in 2022 who's name was Bobbie Louise Gentry who dies about that time.
