    You can just let players always have a "hand" of three tiles to choose from, rather than burying tiles. But either way it helps. Cool you mentioned this trick!

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 років тому +2

      Thanks! And it sounds like current tile-placement games do this more and more. Planet is the one that comes to mind. Players take turns drafting the tile they want from a pool of player count + 1 face-up tiles.

    Carcassonne is still in my top 5 games. I don't have a perfect memory for all the tiles, but I still know enough that, usually, 95% of my placements will eventually get me points, without having to toss very many useless pieces way off on an unused part of the board (and even then, I can sometimes use those to block my opponents). The small scale tactics leading up to stealing cities, and the long term strategy of where and when you place your farmer really appeal to me.
    I think this game is VERY fun, especially if you throw in just expansions 1 and 2. All of my games last about an hour, which is the sweet spot for me, and the Inns, Cathedrals, and Builders add TONNES of tactical and strategic decisions.
    Might want to reword future Find the Fun episodes so it's more clearly your personal opinion. It almost came across as an objective fact in this video, and I'd hate to see new board gamers skip this classic.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 років тому +1

      Ha! IS there such thing as objectivity when you're talking about how fun a board game is? Obviously, your mileage may vary... and you must be driving a slower car than the rest of us.
      Sick burns aside, i didn't play Carcassonne before shooting this video in the off chance there was some undiscovered fun to be had, because i was pretty sure i had drawn the correct conclusion. Even as i was setting up the game to photograph it, i had trouble putting the tiles together, since there were only ever a few legal places to stick 'em. It just confirmed how very, *objectively* right i am. ;)

    Thanks for the nice review of Carcassonne. So I'm not alone in not grasping the magic of this super popular game. That is a relief to hear. Somehow I feel I'm somehow obliged to like this game given its enormous fan base.
    By the way, how nice it would be if you did a similar Scrabble bashing video! I'm sure Scrabble is even much worse than Carcassonne. For example, I simply refuse to play with the Q included, as you always require an rare U as well, in the Dutch version in any case, but this probably holds up for English as well. It's a sad thing that there are no good word games.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  День тому

      Scrabble is kind of like chess. If you want to play well, you have to study. But then you put yourself in another league entirely, and if you try to play against casual players, they’ll get angry at you.
      In English, there are about 10 words in the official Scrabble Dictionary that begin with Q without U, and one of the first things you do when you start to study the game is to learn those words. But if you foist QAT on a casual player and insist it’s valid and that it’s in the Scrabble Dictionary, they’ll get upset and say “well i don’t play like that.” Sigh.

    it seems insane to me that anyone would play with more than one or two expansions at a time and then complain that it's too much. If you don't want to be overloaded with rules and options, then don't overload yourself. I only own the base set and haven't even combined the abbot and river, we play them separately in my house. I'm looking forward to my big box arriving, so we'll be able to widen our options for playing, but we won't be throwing them all in at once.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  3 роки тому

      My base set actually came with The River included, and i think it's safe to add no matter what else you're playing with, since it doesn't add any rules to think about - it just varies the layout. But i don't like the idea of designing a pile of expansions to a game that either a) can't be played together (that's the WORST) or b) shouldn't be played together.

    I’m with ya, used to be fun but not anymore. However there are tile placement games with more control (like you always have 3 face up and can choose one like in gingerbread house) but I don’t reach for carcassone anymore but also refuse to get rid of it LOL

    I only enjoy tile placement when everyone has a personal board and there is more than one stack to choose from(like Castles of Burgundy or Rajas of the Ganges). This removes most of the (accidental) kingmaking and reduces the odds that you're randomly going to draw junk, as you have many options to choose from. The only tile placement I enjoy which doesn't fit that description is Patchwork, and I wouldn't enjoy that either if it wasn't both short and a duel game.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 років тому

      So interesting! i don’t event consider Burgundy a tile laying game, even though that’s quite literally what you’re doing. i think it’s because the tiles are all face up... you’re scheming to get a very specific tile, instead of grabbing a random surprise piece... and the tiles all have specific placement spots. You’re not really struggling to fit that tile into some jigsaw structure. When i think (disapprovingly) of tile-laying games, i’m thinking of games like Carcassonne, Explorers of the North Sea, and (shudder) ...Tsuro.

    Hello, Ryan. I believe you've been expecting me (here, and BGG, whichever you see first).
    Carcassonne: fun mechanics, easily learned, potentially cutthroat. You really want to play with people who have a similar approach to the interactive options, i.e. "take that!" I am not at all against having the list of tiles available to all players (I too suffer from a patchy short-term memory.) This was one of the first strategy games I would bring out when my kids were little. And, I usually eschew the farmer rules when teaching any new players.
    I've played twice in the past year, and not for a year and a half before that. The most recent time, I came in last of three players, the winner being completely new to the game. I won't say he was entirely lucky, as he's got a head for these things, but I will say I was routinely unlucky. Too many turns the tiles came up in someone else's favor instead of mine. So, it doesn't get frequent play, but I do still *enjoy* it, for what it is. There are a lot of games that ride the fence of meaningful decisions and random chance, and this is still among the better of that lot.
    All told, a solid 7 out of 10.
    Incidentally, I played Ingress one warm season, many moons ago, until the snows fell and I had my fill. I played Pokemon Go for a couple summer months until my interest waned. I'm now playing Wizards Unite for, what, 2 and a half weeks? Yeah, the novelty is already wearing off.

    I completely agree with how you judge Carcassonne; it was great back then, but doesn't hold its own against modern competition. However, I do get it out of the shelf quite often because many aspects of this game make it more attractive to my family members (aka co-players) than, say, Great Western Trail. We purchased a big box and play with limited expansions (River, Super meep, Abbot, Builders and Traders, Flying Machines) with friends and relatives...and play pretty cut-throat...except for the river tiles (which we keep stacked) we put all the other tiles in a bag to draw from because pulling from stacked tiles seems to lack a bit of randomness. Any more 'expansions' seems like overload or making things a bit too easy...and crazy trying to score and figure out some of the rules...the expansions we use are really great for potential conflict so that keeps the games lively. We're thinking of adding a 'jerk-face board' and after 10 moves that really hammer someone you get a couple of bonus points.

    The memorization makes the game great. It makes it a skill game. Hard to remember? Its only 19 different tiles. From 1-9 of each. And they can be grouped for easier memorization. Make and use a help sheet in the start, to learn faster. No problem.
    At 2-player its a masterpiece with online, national and world championships.
    Its unbalanced at 3-players. Pretty fun with four. Kingmaking? Well its really at 2-player the game is fantastic. Every game is unique. Its a constant blocking, challenging, optimizing, locking.
    No I dont support the three tiles. Its amazing with one. In tournaments you can pull a new tile to look at while the other player decides. This is adviced.

      Nights Around a Table In Carcassonne, every game is different. You have to adapt to this. The memorization done in Carcassonne is really super simple, let say, compared to openings in chess. You can't memorize the smartest moves, like chess. And this is great.
      Carcassonne has been super popular since launch, both by competitive gamers like me and among regular gamers. Top 5 played every year of BGG users for 18 years straight. I like this channel and the reviewer seems like a nice guy but these "is it fun" segments, I suspect, are more about you not being open to enjoying a game from the outset.
    I hated Dominion from a distance for the longest time, refused to even consider it. But then I reluctantly played it and found out that, in spite of it's hideousness and "lack of theme", it's a great game.
    And some of these criticism are tantamount to arguing "soccer is a bad sport because you can't use your hands" or "sushi is bad because you don't eat it on a bun".
    Finally, a criticism like "you have to have the tiles memorized" is, firstly, false, but secondly, familiarity with the random elements of the game that are drawn from decks or bags or tile stacks is literally in.... 80+ percent of all games in existence.
    So do me a favor and issue a mea culpa: I don't like Carcassonne because of a strong bias I have that prevents me from enjoying it, I'm allergic to it more or less, and my opinion on it should be disregarded entirely.
