I'm afraid it really doesn't like clay, so wouldn't advise planting in this situation. Where do you live? I recommend looking around and seeing if any houses in your area are growing acers. If they are it may be worth giving it a go but my gut instinct says no given the clay as they need a lot of water and clay will bake hard in summer and not provide enough moisture. In winter it will sit waterlogged, and these are two things acers don't like. They will happily grow in a pot though!
