I enjoyed your craftsmanship and video! I've made more than 30 of these projects for family, to contribute to not-for-profit organizations to be used as a fundraising tool, and even to sell. I purchased the full kit and transferred the shapes onto 3/4" oak veneer ply. The oak veneer has obvious imperfections/gaps in side which are frustrating, but after filling these imperfections I found that the imperfections themselves add to the beauty. The oak veneer plywood grain is much more diverse than the 7 ply high quality wood found in the incredible kit. Most folks wanted actual rockers so I was able to create a bowed rockers from two laminated 3/4" ply, then fitting them to new cuts on the hooves. This required spreader bars on the rockers after they were attached to give the rockers stability. This was a great video and beautiful work!
Good for you Grandad, even though I have made a couple of Rocking horses myself it was fascinating to watch your entire process. I am sure that Archie will get so much pleasure from his wonderful friend and what a fantastic piece for him to keep for his own Son. I hope that your neighbors enjoyed watching the process too......Ron Cumpsty
I just made one. Printed the templates on 8.5x11 paper and spray adhesived them to the panels I made. OMG!!! Cutting all those curves with a jigsaw was ridiculous! But it is complete, needing only staining. A fun challenge. I might need to try carving one next time; yours is a lot more lifelike than mine! Thanks!
The love and paitence is wonderful. I want to make one, but I'm almost too afraid to try. I'm no earthly good at carving anything and I'm far too critical on the details.
All materials and equipment came from:- The Rocking Horse Shop, Fangfoss, York, YO41 5JH tel.01759 368737 e-mail info@rockinghorse.co.uk Separate kits for the Horse, the swing stand, saddlery trimmings and the Carvers Chop. I am not sure what is meant by Gliding kit. There were model gliders
