The footage in which Ridgy appeared to have been mauled was taken in March, 2022. By the end of last year she has lost her right ear as well. Poor girl has been picked on and harassed non-stop for almost 3 seasons. Ridgy is still around, but she has become reclusive and she comes out last when the meals-on-wheels arrive. Grandee was last spotted in October last year.

I'm a Social scientist, I have some experience studying hierarchy in primates especially in Monkeys, apes & wolves.
Macaques in general have a linear Matriarchal hierarchy. It's important to understand that the Matriarchal in Macaques societies is not Necessary the Alpha female. Because in Macaques societies Matriarchal is a lineage hierarchical rather than the stronger Alpha.
What does this mean is that no matter who The Alpha male favour, the highest ranks loyalty is always with the Matriarch, and the Alpha female will always favor the Matriarch. Their Society respect their Alpha male & tolerated his romance with other females, but that doesn't mean they accepted them completely as members of the highest ranks.
It's possible that Ridgy wasn't a high rank but just a subordinate that Grandee like the most. Once he was outstated, The Alpha female was setting the rules clear that Ridgy is not in the highest society circle.
@DOW2010.. strength has nothing to do with the alpha female or alpha male The alpha females always going to be rank considered by her lineage, So why would you say it's not necessarily the strongest that becomes the alpha therefore you are saying strength has something to do with the female alpha and I'm pretty sure it doesn't also you say the female alpha tolerates the male alpha mating with others Well that's a given they're not bonded that's what a alpha male does He takes care of all the females,. and protects the troop ( One of us is wrong) just saying..🇺🇲🦅🌍⚓ USMC
I agree. Ridgy was mid-ranking until Grandee became alpha. Grandee favored her and the high-ranking monkeys tolerated her now high- ranking status. Once Grandee was outed, the troop reminded Ridgy of her ranking. Moreover, some families (Haggy's) might have fought her in order to raise their ranking. It is important to remember that the matriarch and high-born ranking doesn't usually change (linear) but mid and low-ranking families may shuffle a bit. This shuffle could be because of aggression or an increase in a certain sex of offspring. One example is Dolly, her ranking dropped because of her lack of female offspring.

This video absolutely broke my heart! To see poor Ridgy lose her man & then her social standing & be viciously attacked by members of her own troop really got to me. Her spirit has been destroyed. I wonder if she found Grandee or if he was to come back, would she perk back up? She lost everything when Grandee left. He was her protector, her friend, lover, father to her children, just everything. I can relate to Ridgy in some way because my husband passed away 3 years ago & I lost my spirit, my identity & person that I thought was my best friend turned on me. She had never been a real friend at all since 1984. Ridgy & I are both depressed & lost! The only difference is that Ridgy has children & now a beautiful grandchild or by now, grandchildren, and I don't have any children. I hope she doesn't give up the will to live. Love you, Ridgy! ❤🐒
Sorry for the loss of your husband. I can relate. When my husband died, I was completely kicked out of our circle of married friends, best friends for years, did everything together. As a widow, I was suddenly a single woman threat to them. One even falsely accused me of coming on to her husband, and told the whole group this lie. I was ousted.

@cynthiamorgan3628 Thank you, Cynthia! Oh my goodness! That's horrible how they turned on you! I'm very sorry for your loss as well & for how your so-called "friends" treated you! Humans are absolutely uncaring & cruel to others. I see animal videos that are more loving & caring for each other than we are. It's just depressing! I thought I had made friends at work, but once I left, I found out that they were just acquaintances. Some of them were jealous because I was able to retire at 55 years old & they won't be able to do that. Where I worked, you can retire at 55 if you have at least 30 years of working there. I started when I was 18. So I had 37 years of service. My best friend just deserted me when I needed her the most because she's selfish. I grieved alone then & I'm still alone today. I get more comfort from perfect strangers than people who were supposed to be my friends. I just hope no one ever decides they need a favor cause I'm done with being there for everyone. Once again, I'm truly sorry for your losses!

Poor Ridgy, she’s so traumatised. And it looks as if she’s aged 20 years in just a few months. 😢
Well we have never really taken in to consideration how losing Grandi fully affected her. Ridge was always Grandi's favorite. He even favored there children together. Who says they can't love like we do. What if he was the love of her life and she lost him to. You lose your love, your ranking, and have to deal with constant harassment and abuse. If she was human they would have her on lithium tied up somewhere like Brittany Spears. She probably just barely keeps going for her children. If it wasn't for them she would have disappeared a while ago I think. It's sad to see what happened to her just because Grandi got to old and had to go. You know jealousy and resentment had been building for awhile against Ridge and they were just waiting for Grandi to be gone so they could put her in her place. It's so sad to watch it all play out in real life. 😢

Poor Ridgy. My heart goes out to her. She's so, so thin. Her eyes are empty. Once upon a time I too fell out of favor. I lost my dear love, my friends, myself. I was mentally beaten and on the verge of giving up. At just the right moment, I found the strength to get back on my feet and enjoy my life again. But it wasn't like before as I'm sure that Ridgy's life will never be the same again. I am more subdued and surround myself with a few select family members. There are no more friends, I can't trust anyone that way anymore. Ridgy is going to survive, with her family by her side. God bless her.

Leslie, I'm sorry you've been through so much heartbreak. I understand where you're at mentally, I've been there. Take baby steps and keep faith. Let the privileged few in your life give you the support & love you need and allow time to help heal your wounds. I eventually sought a psychiatrist & ended up being diagnosed with severe depression and PTSD. Through time, therapy & medication, I now have a much happier outlook on life, filled with friends & family.

She is an elderly woman now to and doesn't have the energy as well as being traumatized from being jumped by other monkeys. I'd suspect she will be gone from old age soon.. Why didnt she go with Grandee when he was exiled!?
As far as i know, females remain in their troop of birth for life.
Most likely because male tend to except exile from matriarchal and Natalie groups while females stay with the females even if it means they end up losing rank to a the very bottom of the ranks. Also, for her to leave with Grandee could actually have been seen as Grandee taking away a troop female as well as females, if any daughters might have followed.
She could actually have been attacked more so because she attempted to leave with Grandee and/or take daughters with her.
She looks how I feel...tired and beaten by life, and ready to give up!! 😞

I'm not gonna lie this one made me cry, The poor ol gal...
I hope one day she and Grandee will meet again some day and go away together deep into the forest and live out the rest of their lives at peace and with love for each other, OUT of all the others, theirs has always been soooo loving and kind to each other and their babies... All of her kids turned out to be so loving and kind to each other and the others in the troop.

I wouldn't give any hampers to the blue bloods. They get first pickings on everything the feeders bring, so they never go without.
As for Ridgy, she was always kind to all but it goes to show that jealousy and envy are not exclusive to humans 😒

When she's no longer have that protection others who got lower ranking because of her will try to take their ranking back. We don't know where in the social ladder Ridgy belonged before Grandee but my guess is below Haggy. It could also be that Haggy's family saw an opportunity to climb in the hierarchy because Ridgy lost friends and got more vulnerable.
Changes in monkeys' social status also affect their genes. A study estimates that gene expression can predict the social status of an individual with 80 percent accuracy.
The study supports the idea that low social status can be bad for the body. But it hints at the idea that if you improve your social situation, your health improves, too. Scientists also have observed that the social environments of both humans and non-human primates affect their hormone levels and mortality risk, as well as the survival of their offspring. Though the scientists have more work to do to understand how improving social status affects the way genes turn on and off but they observed positive changes in the expression of immune-system genes of several monkeys whose social status changed. The, in my opinion animal abuse study result show that lower-ranking monkeys had lower levels of a certain kind of T cell and showed signs of exposure to chronic stress, two findings that helped explain why their genes turned on and off differently than high-ranking monkeys.
The study also looked for changes in the monkeys DNA and found an animal's rank in dominance correlated with the presence or absence of methyl groups, which help control the switching on and off of genes. The females' immune systems responded rapidly when they moved from a lower social rank to a higher one, to the point where formerly low-ranking animals looked genetically like high-ranking ones. There are a lot of effects of social status on genes but they also saw that that many of the changes wasn't permanent and that leads to more questions about how they regulate stress. Monkeys that get shunted to the bottom of the social pecking order experience changes in the activity of their genes that may leave them in worse health and more vulnerable to disease. The changes did not seem permanent but gene expression responded rapidly, and predictably, to match their new status.

I just don’t know why they were so hard on Ridgy, I don’t remember ever seeing her being mean to anyone or acting above her station. I can’t think of any other family in our gang that has been more loving than Ridgy’s which makes this that much sadder.😢 The past three years have been so hard on our gang.😔
It is because Grandee abnormally favored her and their offspring, even more than the matriarch. Ridge and clan were treated like royalty. This caused resentment and jealousy within the troop. Rhesus macaques have good memories and hold grudges. Ridgy and clan absolutely acted above their station. They ate when the high-ranking monkeys ate. They sat were the high-ranking monkeys sat. Grandee protected them even more then he did Bossy or other high-ranking members.

I think if Haggy's family did attack Ridgy, then it most definitely had to do with the ranking. It seems everything has to do with ranking. With the change of an alpha there probably is a reshuffling. Of course, the matriarch and high borns never move.
Hi Sonya! I think you have better clue about their ranking than I do but I know or think I know that from the bottom there's Tabby, Gypsy and even Aggy. Reddy, Haggy and Ridgy middle as you said but between them I think Haggy is the highest ranking of them and not it seems even Reddy is higher than Ridgy. I'm only guessing. AM, JW and MC probably have a much clearer picture than we have specially AM.

I have been catching up on your extradinary monkey videos this past few years and before watching this had seen Ridgy as my absolute favorite. I gelled with her on a human parallel and of all the monkeys I am always excited to see her in the clips, even calling out her name and taking great interest in her babies. Then this video - I cried for days as a human who had gone through almost the same events in my own life, it was deeply sad to see her in such a state. I resonate and hope that Ridgy can rebuild herself to a level of happiness again with her family. I appreciate all your videos, you are a Primate champion of the world sharing your adventures & knowledge with all your followers. Thank-you !!
Life is getting rough everywhere. Hope she can recover. It looks like they were trying to kill her, she has to be in a lot of pain.
Oh poor Ridgy, Maybe she went down because the alpha left, and that's when they attacked her. She will never trust again like she use too. I understand her plight, going through without the physical scars but internal pain and no longer trusting anyone. Left friends and family behind. I'm on my own and I feel just fine with that. She will never be the same. My heart hurts for her.

Have a great getaway @arroz! I’m really shocked to see that she could be ganged-up on so viciously. I can’t imagine what she’d done to warrant such an awful beating, being bitten and tattered. The gaping wounds on her legs very easily could have developed infection and ended her life. So, I ask again, what could she have done to deserve that? Was she mean, or abuse power as the matriarch? Did she break the capital monkey-law of accepting a hamper? I’d love some perspective on this if anybody has any input.
Hello AM, Happy Chinese New Year..! Though this was very heartbreaking for Ridgy poor girl Grandee completed her I think this is why she is not the same. That being said I believe this episode was still one of the best. To relive some memories of Grandee was absolutely wonderful. Thank you for that you are amazing to bring their lives into our homes. I want to add I just love when the little babies give the grimaces to strangers the way Gigy gave you. Lol so adorable. I’ll see you back Jan 30th which is my birthday. This was so heartbreaking to watch. Poor Ridgy! This made me cry, she can’t even open her eyes or won’t. She is a completely broken monkey. Monkeys, although I love them, can be so cruel. I pray she recovers completely, but she seems to have no interest in anything.

This episode just broke my heart. A good mother, faithful and then to lose her mate, then to be brutalized by members of her troop, ostracized not only herself but her children as well. It's just heartbreaking. May you now find the peace that was denied at the end of your life.

You should have tried to help her, not just document her. People can say that this is what happens in the wild, so you have to let it play out. This is anything but a natural wild habitat. These monkeys are watched, photographed, fed, and even manipulated and abused. When you have the power to help another living creature that’s suffering, you do. Rather, you should. Shame on anyone who doesn’t try.

I imagine that you have more stories like this and have shielded your viewers from some of the hard truths of life in a troop. I can’t tell if haggy’s family was ‘rubbing salt in wound’ by grooming Ridgy’s wounds, or if the pauses from the two of them looking at and actually touching how damn deep her wounds were, was the both of them going ‘Jeez, we wanted to teach her lesson, not maim her for life!’
Maybe they realized they went a bit overboard? They definitely got their point across, but perhaps they both started being more civil to Ridgy after giving her bone deep wounds that could potentially kill her?
Poor girl. They can be vicious! People need to stop taking the babies! If this was a human attack, it would have been severe injuries or worse! Then the monkey would be punished or killed. They keep them until they aren't babies and send them out on their own with no survival skills and no way of understanding how hierarchy works within the troop. Or they just dispose of them like trash. So either way, the odds of their long term survival is very slim. It's so sad. 😪🤧

I feel for Ridgy. She looks depressed and aged. She not only losses her loved partner Grandee,she list her status. Was humiliated and wounded. She took it with grace, but I'm not sure she fully understands. I know I don't even understand the circumstances I experienced

When they beat her she suffered some internal injury you can tell, most likely a stroke or something. The blinking one eye only and the slight sag to her face would make it appear so, however I’m not a doctor I just know if nothing else her spirit is shattered.

Well, we don't know if Ridgy's daughters protected her or not. She has been in many fights with many members of the troop these last two years. Her older daughters could have tried to protect Ridgy or just protected the little ones. In a few episodes, we saw Gigi run to her older sisters, Rudy and Ruby, when Ridgy was being attacked. Her older daughters have had scratches, and Rudy had a large injury on her leg. Were these injuries from protecting Ridgy, their family, themselves or the troop? We don't know. Once Grady was born, Vivi seemed to just protect little Grady and cared for Gigi, Didy and Fifi.
Remember, Haggy has many strong older daughters (~6) and Nony, whereas Ridgy has three older daughters, maybe four if you count Vivi. Not really a fair fight. Also, Didy, Gigi and Grady need protected.
Moreover, I don't believe it was just Haggy's family that fought with Ridgy.
Bossy's family also fought with Ridgy. We saw Bossy's family put Ridgy in her place when she tried to join the high borns under a tree. Bossy's girls are big and strong. Dy is the size of a large adult male. Bry, Bolly and Bessy can be assertive and aggressive. Not to mention Barney, Barry and Bucky. Ridgy's girls and little one would be destroyed by this family if they didn't show submission. Barry and Barney definitely put Ridgy in her place because Ridgy would show total submission and cower any time either one approached.
Let's not forget Lancy. She is very assertive and aggressive if need be. Her family includes two older big boys (Laddy and Larry), Litty and all their teenagers who could join the fight.
Dorothy and Dorty are also an aggressive duo.
Then we have all the mid-ranking monkeys possibly trying to move up in rank.
I really don't think Ridgy's girls could defend against this. The family is not that strong and has little ones to protect.
So, whatever Ridgy and her family members did or didn't do, they are all alive, injury free, and the little nut Grady is thriving. Showing submission, protecting and caring for each other was the smartest option IMO.
We have seen Ridgy's daughters grooming her, so she has not been abandoned. Reclusive yes. I would be reclusive too.

Poor ole girl. Such a good mother and partner to Grander loved them together. Ridgy is now just a shell of her former self. Thank God for her daughter.

I felt my heart break when I saw what happened to Ridgie. I felt the protectiveness flood over me and was ready to defend her and her broken spirit.
Man it breaks my heart to see her like this. In my stupid mind I think why doesn’t she just leave the troupe and find Grandee? Wouldn’t that be an episode AM? He probably had to leave because he loved her a lot more than he ever cared for Bossy. And his injuries before was probably the reason he got them. I think I’m gonna just cry myself to sleep

I always found it extremely odd that Grandee favored Ridgy over Bossy. He was way too protective of Ridgy's girls. This behavior made me worry for Ridgy's girls and Grandees future. I felt that the higher-ranking monkeys might retaliated and hurt the little ones. I was very shocked that Grandee attacked Bossy when Fifi was harassing her to babysit Bubby. He should have protected the matriarch and his new baby girl (Bubby) not Fifi who was in the wrong. I never saw him protect Bubby or any of his other daughters not from Ridgy. Furthermore, I often wondered if Kailey was killed by the higher-ranking monkeys because she overstepped her ranking. Kailey received food from Grandee and hung out with Grandees' offspring (the little spoiled girl gang) who were favored. For me, Ridgys' brutal downfall was NOT surprising. What was surprising was that Vivi, Fifi, Didy and Gigi were not also attacked. It is documented that Rhesus macaques do remember and hold grudges. Moreover, infanticide has been document in wild troops when there is an alpha change. Gigi was not injured. Had Grandee not favored Ridgy and their offspring to the extent that he did, I believe the change of alpha would not have been so aggressive to Ridgy.
It is true, Taggy protects his girls but there is no movement in ranking. So, when Taggy is outed or dies I don't believe his girls will be targeted and attacked per say. None of his offspring are from high-ranking females. Stacy is the highest-ranking female he has mated with. Thus, Taggys' offspring don't receive special high-ranking treatment that would make other troop members jealous. The only change that I would predict is Annie's members (Dana and Wibby) might not be welcomed. Lubby seems to now be a member of Bossy's troop so she would not be chased off.
Also, I wonder how Olivia is faring, now that Skull Head has died. Her relationship with Skull Head was similar to Ridgy and Grandee's. Olivia was harassed but Skull Head always protected her. One would rarely see Olivia away from Skull Head per Monkey's inc. I have not seen Olivia since the birth of her new baby Chase in any of Monkey's Inc. Episodes. I hope Olivia and Chase were not attacked like Ridgy and are still alive.

It doesn't matter how many steps up on the hierarchy ladder a monkey gain or starts from (high or low) when she's protected. When she's no longer have that protection others who got lower ranking because of her will try to take their ranking back. We don't know where in the social ladder Ridgy belonged before Grandee but my guess is below Haggy. It could also be that Haggy's family saw an opportunity to climb in the hierarchy because Ridgy lost friends and got more vulnerable.

You make a lot of great points. I personally doubt that Kailey was killed by the higher ranks. As far as I can tell, there hasn't been any known cases of retaliation-based infanticide in Monkey Hill from within the troop. She was spoiled and overstepped, but I think it's more likely she was hit by a car. Tracking infanticide is tricky because of each troop operates differently and is composed of different personalities and behaviors, no Alpha in Monkey Hill has killed a baby thus far. It's honestly a relief that somehow Ridgy's daughters have avoided the same treatment as hers, but it's surprising to me that it seems like they also haven't quite dropped in rank either. At least not as much as their mother.
Mo keys can be brutal to each other. Those teeth can do alot of damage. She's completely broken.

Oh, my gosh, I finally got to come back and watch all of this episode.😔 This is one of the saddest, heartwrenching things I've ever seen. Of course this is where my mind goes and I don't mean to put human feelings on a wild animal, but.....If an animal can have a broken heart and grieve themselves to death, she's one that is doing just that. Grieving for Grandee, the love of her life, and from this treatment from other monkeys, the hurt and humiliation on top of her grieving broken heart is surely but slowly taking her life. Poor Ridgy, she's totally given up. I don't imagine she'll be with us much longer. Poor girl, this makes my heart hurt for her.😥
I too worry about Ridgy. She doesn’t deserve this harsh treatment. I wish Grandee would cove back. He would comfort her.
