I remember being about 14 and realizing how weird it was that The Maxx had become my favorite Image comic. I had always liked Sam Keith's art, first saw his work on a Batman Annual cover and then MCP and I liked Maxx a lot when it first came out; but I easily liked Spawn, Savage Dragon and Pitt more than Maxx. Maxx was just too weird...Cut to a few years later and from a combination of McFarlane handing off the art duties on Spawn and my own growing up a little and Maxx was the most interesting comic I was reading. It also perfectly positioned me to get ready to try something less superherory like Sandman a little later Preacher or even later Crumb's stuff or Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers....Sam Keith links all that stuff somehow in my mind. If the 4 writer fill issues of Spawn opened my mind to a bunch of great writers and different headier takes on comics (okay, not Miller's, I love you Frank but that issue was phoned in from a switchboard) than Sam Keith's Maxx took me the next level and got me interested in even deeper channels of comics and beyond. I think the first time I read about feminism was in The Maxx! I was like 'Who the fuck is Camille Paglia; new side character?"

Sam Kieth told me at nycc2018 this was his tryout issue! They told him he couldn't have the book bc he didn't do "daytime exteriors" very well. I think they just knew he was too weird to do a mainstream successful Hulk book at the time

Please guys, we need a Sam Keith shoot interview! One of my favourite artist from those glorious days in the 90's... I know I'll probably get slack for this, but, for whatever reason, my favourite cover of all time is Maxx #3

Luckily, I was headed to my local shop to pick up Tom's Kirby Biography today...and was able to scoop one of these out of the long boxes for the pre-kayfabe price. Great stuff, always great to see an artist in their formative years. Especially one as iconoclastic as Kieth.

It’s crazy to think that this issue is as far away from us now in 2020 as it was from the birth of Marvel Comics itself in the early 60’s.

Sam says he’s more influenced by Arthur suydam’s early stuff, which is a more whimsical wrightson/frazetta

I think Peter David was already aware of Sam Kieth prior to this issue. If I remember it right, they had been teamed on something before, but possibly it was an assignment that didn’t pan out, I don’t remember. But David liked him, and knew he was anxious to draw The Hulk, so when he needed a fill-in artist, I think Sam Kieth was his idea.

I was searching for an episode on Epicurus the Sage and couldn’t find one. Please tell me you guys have read those? I just finished the first one and, oh boy! ‘89 Sam Keith drawing tons of non-superhero stuff and Steve Oliff colors are incredible.

Sam Kieth has always fascinated me. Never could tell in interviews if he was just that self effacing or genuinely that unhappy with his work. I always thought his work was something special and entertaining.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane, this one is in one of my long boxes as well.

FYI, back in the mid-70s, Berni Wrightson did the cover of one issue of Incredible Hulk, that being No. 197, cover-dated March 1976. No interior art -- just the cover, unfortunately.

This is what I’m talking about - Great Piece on comics like this!! I remember picking this up and was literally blown away with the tone and feel...there was some Wrightson, some Sendek...but it was Sam Keith all the way and what an intro to his work. More of this guys!!!

Lucky enough to still own this from ‘back when’ and gotta agree, Hulk just looked a beast, a hairy one too (!) but not so much as Hyde! Wow, really pulled me in. I think some of the early panels of Bruce in the foliage reminds me of Sandman, with its pacing and angling of the viewer’s viewpoint.
I don’t think it mattered at all that the backgrounds eg train were ‘unrealistic’ as it’s so dreamlike it fits perfectly. Also, it really does feel like a one off. Absolutely love it. Cheers guys from the UK, all best!

Hulk 367 was Dale Keown’s first issue as the regular Hulk artist. I have a very specific reason why I know that which is chronicled here: instagram.com/p/BzI9XBVACoG/?igshid=41gwrx45ep6c

Would LOVE to see you guys start tackling 2nd wave Image full force, even though you've expressed disdain for the Bad Girl Era in the past. Still, between the rise of Top Cow/Michael Turner, the Cliffhanger imprint books (Joe Mad, Scott Campbell, Humberto Ramos' criminally forgotten Crimson, Bachalo's Steampunk), Brett Booth and Travis Charest at Wildstorm, early Astro City, the Ellis era at Wildstorm - there's meat on the bone there. Those were halcyon days of recklessly throwing wild shit against the wall to see what would stick for us old millennial fans (as opposed to young Gen Xers like yourselves). Keep rocking and rolling.

I was at the National Portrait in D.C. and my best friend and I both saw this study for a painting by some old master, and we both said “Image,” and it was a relatively quiet moment, but it was important, as this particular image culled up memories of socially difficult, intellectually exciting times that were illustrated by the Image crew, knaw sayin’?

Keown did one issue prior to this one, 367, finishing out a four part story line called something like Countdown that Purves did most of. Seemed weird for him to exit mid story after being regular artist for so long but seeing Keown and then Sam Keith and then Keown coming on as regular artist at 369 the book was reaching those McFarlane heights again art wise. Nothing against Purves whose work is quite good too and fit the Joe Fixit story well.

Another potential No-Prize in this issue: Banner's gun definitely did not have a bayonet in the panels before Hyde broke it. Where did the knife come from?

  • @conroyjett

Thanks for doing this issue. I had totally forgotten about it. Storywise, it had a similar vibe to Hulk 335, an early issue in Peter David's run drawn by John Ridgeway. And I would love a Bill Moessner-Loebs shoot. I'm a big fan of Journey: The Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire and Epicurus the Sage graphic novels.

Good analysis. I wasn't wholly in Mr Kieth's work but I fully appreciated his uniqueness amongst his peers at the time. I loved his inking, it was like he was shading with a pencil the way he faded his work.

This takes me back. Almost makes me regret never developing my art and pursuing comics as a career as a kid. No regrets though. Regrets destroy. I did pick up art again though. So that's good. Guys, keep up the great work and thank you for this trip down memory lane.
