  • At the 2024 edition of Ferguson Days in Denmark we got the chance to film this great looking Massey Ferguson 35 aka. Double Butt. In stead of just one axle as normal, this one has an extra one build on to access four wheel drive when power is needed. We have put different clips together of this tractor that we have filmed over the years.
    Hope you enjoy!

Awesome video. The enginuiety that it took to originally design this is truly impressive.

It would be interesting to know how the drive to the rear is connected to the front half. Does it use the ground speed gear of the PTO shaft? Cheers from Australia

I've seen that done with other double butts before so I'd imagine so. Ground drive the pto and it transfers to the back wheels. Similar to the older after market kits they used with front axles of jeeps to make to the front axle of a 35 into a 4x4.

Would have been good to see how the hydraulics of the rear tractor portion were controlled by the front machine, but no - too much to ask I guess !

Why the sarcastic remark? You are just showing your utter ignorance. This website is not a technical forum, nor is it a paid subscription.
If you were to look a bit closer, and have some idea of how the MF hydraulics function, it is obvious how they are arranged. A hydraulic tap off connection has been made to the existing pressure port under where the seat would normally be on the rear tractor, if it was still in place, and can be seen in the video. (also shown at 6.11)
A high pressure hose is then run to a remote control valve mounted on the right hand mud guard of the front tractor. Around 2.08 in the video you can see the driver using it. So, the front tractor is using its hydraulic system to operate the rear tractors 3 point linkage system.
I am not sure that the existing depth control on the rear tractor is still in use, or if the pressure from the remote control is connected directly to the existing 3 point linkage hydraulic ram, as it is internal it cannot be seen.
I suspect that is bypassed, as the depth control is normally controlled by the tractors internal hydraulic pump suction valve.
