    A fake comic collector is some who claims so and owns not one comic

      I'd agree with that. If someone claims to be a collector, but has actually collected nothing, then they are indeed a fake collector. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    When folks were getting free stimulus money they were I mena the fake collectors were buying and buying all these key books. Then when the market started to correct loosing even half of that so called money you put in didn’t hurt your pocket book at all. But if you worked for say 5,000 the thought of dumping your book I feel it slipped to say 2500 is a bitter pill to swallow you follow... This is what happened

      I hear you and agree that people getting caught up in hype and FOMO made some poor financial decisions with all that stimulus money and artificially drove up comic prices. I still don't think I'd necessarily call them "fake" collectors, but more like "foolish" ones. Certainly a lot of them got burned really bad and hopefully they've learned their lessons!

    Another awesome, relevant video! I have a good friend who I have known for 12 years, who is also the store manager for my local comic shop. We have hugely overlapping interests in terms of the comics we like. But how we like to collect them...oh man, we do not see eye to eye. For example, my graded copy of Fantastic Four 72 that I sent to CGC about 10 years ago. He just can't fathom why I would send my comic to CGC and seal off forever the ability to see the gorgeous Jack Kirby art of the Silver Surfer. However, he doesn't hate...he simply doesn't understand the appeal. (He reads over 50 books a month.) He's even cost his store a lot of business by not selling graded books. I tell him "it's not that your customers don't care about CGC books...it's all the people that DON'T come in here because you don't sell them." I even sold him a spare copy of X-Men #142 (CGC 9.4 WP) once, and that book sold the same day he put it out, despite the hefty price tag he put on it (25% over GPA, which he obviously knew nothing about until I told him).
    Bottom Line: Different strokes! If someone is looking to get into one of the best hobbies out there, incredibly rich with history and lore (inside and outside the pages), don't preach to them on how to collect, just offer advice if they ask! Sure, if you see they about to do something foolish, maybe offer some unsolicited advice on avoiding newbie pitfalls or scams if they want to spend for some sought-after back issues. But even that is a judgment call, you know? Keep up the great topics!

      Thank you! And, you make some great points to add to the conversation. Different strokes for different folks is exactly right, and I think it's awesome how many ways there are to enjoy this wonderful hobby. Btw, FF 72 has one of my favorite Kirby/Surfer covers...I don't blame you for getting it slabbed!

    As for my collecting style, I have about 6,000 raw comics, many of which I have read, some not. Also 400 CGC books, over half of which I bought new off the rack or shelf as a teenager and sent off in my 40's and 50's. It's cool to know I can look up a comic I bought for $0.60 and see that it's considered one of the major keys of the late bronze age and is worth over 2,000 times that original cost. Even with the $40 to grade it, ship it, insure it, etc. still gives me validation that I wasn't completely stupid hanging on to stuff -- and even 45 years ago, thinking to obsessively preserving their condition. I do still read some new stuff, but some I just like the cover art. I also love Marvel, John Byrne and Michael Golden, and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the 1977 24-issue Godzilla series, as well as early Micronauts, ROM, Shogun Warriors, and yes even Human Fly. I've even recently gotten into Spawn! Issues 1-6 were awesome, so I had to have a CGC 9.8 of issue #1! If you've gotten this far, I appreciate you reading this ramble. That's my jam!

That's cool that you worked to preserve their condition when you were younger...I wish I could say the same about the comics I bought as a teenager, lol. I've been putting together the ROM run myself...it's very affordable and I really like a lot of the covers.

    Can't stand gatekeepers. I like how you tied it to religion, because like religion, some people can be so extreme they try to force their views onto others. It takes so much energy for people to be negative rather than just let people collect what they love and collect how they want. I've seen someone argue against using the word "community" with collecting. He twisted himself into so many pretzels trying to justify it. Great video with nuggets of wisdom 🤘

    So different from speculators that don't really care about the books?
    As for replacing the old gods with new I've thought for a while most people need something. They have rejected Christianity but now need to belong. Its been transferred to there sports team, music or whatever. Back in the 90's England I've had some hairy moments being in the wrong place with the wrong shirt. It's really was like a religious fanaticism with some.

    • @wahoocomics
      @wahoocomics  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, if there's someone who acknowledges that they are only buying comics like stocks and have no interest at all in the books themselves, then I'd agree they are not collectors. My hope is that person would not claim the label of collector, but would instead call themselves an investor. Perhaps I'm naive, though, lol. That said, I do think collectors can speculate.
      And, I think you are exactly right in how people have transferred their religiosity from Christianity to other things. I personally believe the need to be religious (to belong as you said as well as the need to give ourselves to something bigger than us) is within all of us, so the question is not *if* we will "worship," but *what* will we worship.
      Thanks for watching and the thoughtful comment!

Now, I am a purist and Kate and believe it's bringing a downfall of comic collecting but that's my personal belief. Although it does bring me joy to see others happy in any way they collect. You have some great points. Comics are elevated too much, especially the spec books. I buy a lot of comics that I had read in the 80s and 90s but I dont read them again when I buy them today. I buy them only to finish a set OR get a better copy of what I already have, etc. If I have read 10% of a series, such as Usagi Yojimbo, I will still buy any comic I find from that series if I want the set.

      I certainly did not remove any comment. I'm still able to read yours from my phone. Anyways, I understand what you are saying in your comments and partially agree but I think they actually support my claim that as people move away from the old gods, then they will embrace the new gods as you and the others you criticize ascribe the attributes of divinity to UA-cam/social media. Those who are enslaved to technology have certainly made it their god, but I would suggest that you have also given it the power of a god with your claims of how it shapes people. Because you seem to see it as satanic in nature, though, you reject it as a false god. However, I see technology as mostly a tool that amplifies what is already in the heart of a person. For those who worship the self, then it feeds into the things you are rightly concerned about. For those who worship something outside the self, then it has the ability to enhance that worship. Anyways, there's a lot more to be said than can be done in a few sentences in a UA-cam comment section. Despite the anger you direct towards me in your claims of my delusionality, I appreciate your comments as they clearly are thought out.

    • @SequentialGeek
      @SequentialGeek 27 днів тому

       @wahoocomics you are totally off, -this "technology" of censoring has nothing to do with any thing that "amplifies what is already in the heart of a person" -whether you are all about "the self" or not. Your saying that by having my comments muted and making sure that I am not noticed online with algorithms that only support shills and sellers and gossiping entitled bigots, that is supposed to be someting that "amplifies what is already in the heart of a person".
      We are supposed to be surrounded by asphalt and traffic and remote everything and hate and alienation and isolate each other since there is more ROI than anything brick n mortar, from datamining what people do online for social engineering how well we can save and develop pavlovian responses all of which has nothing to do with your b.s. delusions. Computers are for a control state, nothing else. You are lucky -that's it.
      As well keeping most of this fake country as a place for people to be isolated surrounded by asphalt and traffic is so the real estate value of the places where venture capitalists live (on the boasts and in major cities) is maintained if not increased -the yoo-s-a is a fukn evil scam. There is no reason more cities in the Mid West are not livable, except for the fact that we live in a fake country where improving anything is a taboo concept -unless it has to do with a tiny screen that is used to avoid eye contact and alienate others 'different'. There is no hope. There are only the shills that dominate search results =that's it, that's the internet, no improvement, just gossip and people that play head games and censor any point we try to make -yootoobs algorithm is fukn EVIL -I would never tell anyone new to comics to check out yootuoobe no fukn way...
      And dawg, G'money, thaz sum dope rhetorical rederick lol: "then they will embrace the new gods as you and the others you criticize ascribe the attributes of divinity to UA-cam/social media" Nope, that sum funny b.s. wak hook lmao! wtf lol! did you not just pay attention to what I justtha'fuk lmao!! divinity of my farts up that nose of the alogorythmic aroma like Moses robe after he walked across the bottom the muck tha Red Sea like swimn in tha Sound by Tacoma (poor guy), that social media behind the curtain, it's dreck, has no longevity, you are applying the concept of a grain of sand to an antelope's dingleberry that flies off and lands on the cheetah's nose its really annoying for a min but it's just that, part of the anti-culture that makes up this fake county. ...This isn't is, this is no religion, this is spaztarded to the mazizoom dweebie, w/all the limitations and compliances and "potential" violations, some chumps think they are going to gain ad rev to pay for their gas thafuk, wouldnt matter yet these fukn douchebagshillbitxz are the dominant form of info onzda tooltoobzez -it's very Z'illennial in general to be about 'im sorry that you feel that way' and 'oh well thats yr choice' lack of compromise or cooperation, this $hit caters to that here, from Bush's "If you see something, say something", or Oboma's "safe space" 'entitlements', post patriot act and on and on we're fukd, this is a platform dev environment for games, predictive analytics, social engineering, lick a Like or suck a Sub lmao! Regardless of whether you believe in speaking in tongues or the rapture or some other aspect of faith that might differentiate you from your fellow brother at least you can both can agree in having faith in Jesus.
