The Balls were cast from .54 Lee molds
Powder used was Goex FFG and FFFFG
Inspired by Prussian designs of the time, this model of Dragoon pistol was common amongst Britain's mounted troops throughout the 18th Century. When a Light Dragoon pistol was developed in the 1760s, this pistol was relegated to the Heavy Dragoons. However prior to this it likely would have been in stores at the opening of the American Revolution and likely saw use on both sides during the conflict.
However the true claim to fame of this elegant pistol came prior to this. During the War of the Austrian Succession (King George's War), British Dragoon regiments such as the Royal Dragoons, King's Dragoons, and Royal Scots Greys saw service in at the Battles of Dettingen and Fontenoy. At the victory at Dettingen, the Dragoons are noted as firing a volley from their pistols to check a charge by French cavalry. The defeat at Roucoux in 1746 and at Lauffeld in 1747 could have turned into disasters if it were not for the heroic actions of the British cavalry which held off the French while the army retreated.
During the Jacobite Rebellions, after being embarrassed at Battles of Prestonpans and Falkirk, Dragoons played a significant role at the Battle of Culloden by charging both flanks of the Highland army.

Thanks for doing all these videos on your military heritage pieces. I for one have no problem supporting those people and the work they do after seeing all the countless hours of enjoyment you seem to get out of firing them. Im making the plunge sir, and my local gunsmith has given me his blessings.

Colonel Tavington fell on hard times after the war. Role-playing with 2 liters, and reliving the glory days. At least they let him keep his pistol. Now he advances himself through his own good graces!

A very creatively done black powder pistol adventure!
Your video brings to mind the video that I recently saw about a horrific Bear Attack that occurred in 1787 in New Hampshire where a boy was killed. I wonder how your 1738 Heavy Dragoon Flintlock pistol with a full sized ball load, if it would be sufficient to stop and kill an attacking bear.
Do you feel it would be sufficient to stop and kill an attacking Black Bear, and if so, at what distance?
What say you or anyone else?

boy i dont know i mean you can load it hot but that small of a roundball in that short of a barrel just doesn't instill confidence against a bear

I just got one of these and I love it! Could you guys recommend where and what size lead balls to use and where from? Also the powder charge you’re using? Thanks a lot and keep the videos coming!

Congratulations on your new pistol . these guns are typically 62 caliber but in reality the barrels on these are closer to 61 so I suggest shooting a 60 caliber round ball that's what we shoot you can purchase them @trackofthewolf.com or like us you can cast your own much cheaper. the powder charge we are useing here is 60 grains of 2fg must be real black powder as you can not shoot pyrodex in a flintlock. if i were you i would start with twenty grains and work your way up and see what your charge your new pistol likes. thanks for watching

It's not a Dragoon....or Heavy Dragoon...it was officially known as the
Flintlock military pistol - Pattern 1738 Land Service. And after as many shots as you have fired and probably more without us seeing, you need to learn to turn your flint over and knap it. Then you won't have any problems. The officers that carried these were known to carry wipes to assist in removing bore fouling.

Make paper cartridges with FFFg BP. It is period correct and much more fun to shoot. Aiming without sights takes some practice.

I just thought of something take styrofoam and cut it in a perfect round patches it's the right thickness and you have shotgun wadding for that it's easy to get styrofoam sheets you can use that as a shotgun pistol with that styrofoam it holds it in better and it also cleans the barrel at the same time when it comes out of the barrel it's almost like I felt tip wadding that you use in a cap and ball pistol but that styrofoam is a lot better than using that paper wading something to remember
